Welcome and advice

Hi. Welcome to Wikipedia. I read the plea on your user page for advice to help you understand the ins and outs of contributing. There is a lot of guidance, in fact a confusing amount: good places to start are the Introduction, the Five Pillars, and the guide to writing Your First Article. A lot of new articles fall foul of the requirements for Notability and for Verifiability from Independent, Reliable Sources. The other two key content policies are No Original Research and Neutral Point of View. Finally (I feel as though I'm setting you a term's reading list) the List of Bad Article Ideas and the rather long list of What Wikipedia is not are worth a look. I hope that helps! JohnCD (talk) 17:01, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey JohnCD, I'm adding these articles to my list of readings lol. There's is an incredible amount to read and I'm doing my best to navigate on my own but this will help me for sure. Thanks for your help! OlYeller21 (talk) 17:08, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Advice

If you edit scientific articles, use only peer-reviewed sources. It's really easy to do this <ref>{{cite doi|????????}}</ref>Andrewjlockley (talk) 10:39, 19 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Will do. I'm not going to lie, I'm confused but I'll do my best to figure it out. :-) OlYellerTalktome 10:41, 19 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
All papers have a doi number just cut and paste the text i gave you, inserting the doi number and the refs will be done automatically for you.Andrewjlockley (talk) 13:38, 19 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
OK, that makes sense. Do you think you could toss me a link to an article with a Digital Object Identifier number? Do only online articles that analyze a researcher's findings have a DOI# or would, for instance, and article on Wired Science hace a DOI#? I'm really surprised I had never heard of this until now lol. Again, thanks for your help. OlYellerTalktome 17:09, 19 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Not all scientific article have DOIs. A lot of older articles do not. Here's an example that has a DOI, [1] and here's one that doesn't have a DOI. [2] And it's not just papers that can have DOIs. See http://doi.org/. Articles on Wired Science do not have DOIs. -Atmoz (talk) 01:58, 20 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
SOrry for any confusion, decent journal articles without a doi are still acceptable. It's just a simple rule of thumb.Andrewjlockley (talk) 09:57, 26 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello

Hello and welcome. This is just a quick reply to your notes on my talk page (thanks). Don't be too mislead by all the conflict you see there: there are many areas of wiki that aren't battle grounds! William M. Connolley (talk) 08:45, 26 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I guess my biggest quest at the moment is to find out where I can be most useful. Recently, I've been editing articles on topics that I know something about. I also checked out AfD but it seems like there's plenty of people there willing to condemn or protect articles. I've watched over the New pages and Recent changes list but again, it seems as though there are plenty of people watching those areas. I think I need to get into a wikiproject. All I do know is that I want to be a a combination of a WikiDragon and WikiOtter which a small pinch of WikiGnome. I don't see myself being a WikiFairy or WikiElf as I think that there are plenty of those around already and they just don't fit my style. I guess I'm looking for suggestions on how to move in that direction. OlYellerTalktome 20:00, 26 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
New page patrol is always busy with work.Andrewjlockley (talk) 23:47, 26 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Vandalism of Powell, Ohio

You handled it well. Just note that you don't have to add the Wiki link brackets ("[[ ]]") inside of the vandalism template. Thanks for your efforts! -- Gyrofrog (talk) 23:10, 27 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I do not think there was any "vandilism to Powell, Ohio you guys take this shit way to seriously, Its a small town in the middle of no where I really dont think people are going to care, they probably are going to get some laughs.

Replied at Talk:Bob Cranmer and at User talk:Cunard#Removal of Speedy Deletion tag on Bob Cranmer. Cunard (talk) 10:12, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

When I first began editing Wikipedia, I was one of the overzealous SD taggers, see my contributions from March 2008. Many of the bad speedies that I added to the articles were declined. Then, gradually I became more interested in rescuing articles from CAT:CSD and WP:AFD, by adding references to the articles that are in danger of speedy deletion. For example, I've rewritten an article that looked like this into its current state. I've also transformed an article that looked like this into its current state. If you are interested in doing work like this, I recommend that you patrol CAT:CSD and WP:AFD to see if there are any articles that can be saved. You can find sources for these articles at Google Books, Google News/Google News Archive. You can also join the Wikipedia:Article Rescue Squadron, which is a WikiProject that tries to rescue notable articles that are at AfD. If rescuing articles isn't your thing, you can be a recent-changes patroller, and revert vandalism by using tools like Twinkle or Huggle. If you like to watch drama enfold, spend some time at WP:ANI, where there are many interesting discussions. Cunard (talk) 21:33, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think that's something I could get into. I want to create rather than destroy. Besides not wanting to destroy, I usually get upset by people adding article for self promotion and when people mark articles for deletion with little to no reason. I think I'd like to get into policy discussion but from what I've seen, I don't think I could deal with the long winded, listen-to-my-voice responses. I'm used to discussing policy in a more formal setting with parliamentary procedure. Also, I'm not into drama... at all. I've also watched the recent change portal but I think I'd get most into rescuing articles. Thanks for the pointers. I really appreciate your time. I'll probably bug you in the future for more info if you don't mind. OlYellerTalktome 21:58, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Feel free to ask me for more info. Good luck with saving articles! Best, Cunard (talk) 22:10, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Unskooled

Dear OIYeller21,

I am a representitive of Unskooled and I am here to tell you that Unskooled IS a real band. If you would like more info please search Unskooled in Google, go to the [http://www.unskooled.synthasite.com/ band's website or email us at unskooledlakes@hotmail.com

Thanks,

Z Bowen General Manager & Pianist, Unskooled —Preceding unsigned comment added by ZakJPBowen (talkcontribs) 11:31, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Z. The question was not whether or not the band exists, it was (and still is) whether the band is notable under WP:Notable. This is generally proven if a reliable third party finds the band important enough to write about. No proof of such articles has been given and I couldn't find any on my own to try and save the article from deletion. If you have any questions, please let me know. I'll do my best to help explain whatever questions you have. Another thing to keep in mind is that this band might not be notable YET. For more info on that, see WP:NOTNOW. Cheers. Deletion of template

Hello. It might not have been your intention, but your recent edit removed content from Template:Adw. When removing text, please specify a reason in the edit summary and discuss edits that are likely to be controversial on the article's talk page. If this was a mistake, don't worry; the text has been restored, as you can see from the page history. Thank you. --Orlady (talk) 05:09, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm speechless. The history says that I deleted it but I couldn't even say when I've ever even been on that page, let alone had a desire to edit it. I'll do some research and see what was going on. Thanks for the notice. OlYellerTalktome 05:13, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm relieved to know that the deletion was unintentional. I was perplexed to find that the template had been deleted. --Orlady (talk) 05:21, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks!

Thanks for changing the speedy delete on that artist page for me. I originally nominated it for speedy delete because the page was specifically about the band, and not about the artist. However, you are correct, this artist is not notable enough to warrant a page on WP. I support your deletion proposal!

re: Chris Doss

Heh, I can't say I'm that into basketball so I don't have a clue how notable 200-0 is, I will however try and be more cautious in the future. And thanks for letting me know about my error :) - Kingpin13 (talk) 20:24, 9 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Josh Rosenthal

Hi, you asked for comment on the WikiProject music talk page about the Josh Rosenthal article. I don't see a big problem; you already had some discussion with the other editor on the article's talk page, and resolved some issues so that there is no longer a threat of the page being deleted. Regarding the photo credits, I don't see a problem. The photographer has been identified on the JPG page, and it matches the name in the article. The name should be removed from the article, as this is against standards, but the JPG itself appears to be okay, and the licensing info appears to be correct.

You say you are frustrated with the other editor, but I'm betting he is frustrated too, as you have previously nominated the article for deletion, removed his JPG, threatened him with 3RR (which has to do with 3 revisions in 24 hours, not 3 revisions over any period of time), accused him of vandalism in your edit summaries (which is inappropriate), and keep reminding him to let you know if he has any questions, implying he has never asked for feedback from you before, which is not true, so this reminder is unnecessary, and comes across as condescending. You have also been identifying the other editor by name when making accusations, in places where this is not necessary. As for his reverts of the tags, the rules are vague, because they say that tags can be removed if someone disagrees that there are outstanding issues, so your insistance that they cannot be removed is not really true. Getting into a revert war over tags is rather frivolous. But there should be discussion about outstanding issues on the talk page; you should be stating what you think needs to be done, and the other editor should be stating his reasons for removing the tags. Since work on this article is ongoing, you can have this discussion without using tags at all.

You may not see it this way, but you are coming on too strong for someone who is just trying to help; your actions probably appear to be hostile. I recommend you apologize to the editor, and try to continue discussion on the article's talk page about what issues are still outstanding. The other editor already asked you what more needs to be done, so he appears to be willing to work with you. --A Knight Who Says Ni (talk) 00:04, 11 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In good faith, I'm going to assume that you didn't check the history and/or that you've mistaken the unsigned responses on the talk page as my work. You can see here that I was not the one to add the db tag. The 3RR would apply if he had made a third edit. The first two WERE made within 24 hours of each other (less than 20 minutes actually). I never said that there was a policy that they shouldn't be removed but you can't argue that an article with no inline citations shouldn't be tagged as such. Removing a clearly obvious tag can't be construed as constructive. My removal of the jpg was a mistake and you can see here that I corrected my mistake. He's never asked questions after I saved his page from deletion. I agree that an edit war over tags is frivolous which is why I was frustrated and asked for help. Like I said, I assume that you didn't read the history and were confused by the unsigned responses form another editor but pleaes, check out the facts in length before criticising someone. I was already furstrated about this article and I'm even more so now. Thanks for your time. I appreciate it. OlYellerTalktome 00:33, 11 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I just noticed that someone removed the (singer/songwriter) part of the link I left which would have directed you incorrectly to the wrong page. Perhaps that was the issue? I know it's not but I'm trying. OlYellerTalktome 00:42, 11 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to ARS!

Lifebuoy

Hi, OlYeller21, welcome to the Article Rescue Squadron WikiProject! We are a growing community of Wikipedia editors dedicated to identifying and rescuing articles and content that have been nominated for deletion. Every day hundreds of articles are deleted, many rightfully so. But many concern notable subjects and are poorly written, ergo fixable, and should not be deleted. We try to help these articles and content to quickly improve and address the concerns of why they are proposed for deletion. This covers a lot of ground and your help is appreciated!

Some points that may be helpful:
  • WikiProject Article rescue squadron's (ARS) main aim is to help improve Wikipedia articles and content. If someone seeks help, please try to assist if you are able. Likewise feel free to ask for help, advice and clarification.
  • Sometimes we are asked to help rescue articles by people new to our notability and sourcing policies. If the article is not fixable we can help explain why and offer alternatives. Sometimes editors who are new to Wikipedia may perceive the deletion of "their" article as discouraging. Encourage civility and maybe even {{welcome}} them if they have only been templated with deletion messages.
  • The Articles for deletion (AfD) discussion is where the concerns regarding each article are brought up and addressed. To be an effective member of the project you need to know how AfD works as well as how to improve articles. Introduction to deletion process gives a good overview and some good advice for newcomers to deletion.
  • Our primary work is improving Wikipedia articles and content. A more dynamic list with article links and descriptions are located at our rescue list.
  • If you have another language besides English, please consider adding yourself to the list of translators available. Articles and sources that use non-English languages often need translation for those of us who cannot translate for ourselves.
  • Many important discussions take place on the project's main discussion page; it is recommended that you watchlist it.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask on the talk page, and we will be happy to help you.

And once again — Welcome! ~~~~

lol weeee! Thanks! OlYellerTalktome 18:20, 11 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Good nom. Now go and rescue an article. :-) Bearian (talk) 20:59, 11 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

lol, I'm trying to figure out how. I've waited about 2 weeks to see if anyone would have info on how this guy is notable. I gave up once I found out that he didn't really win first prize as the article claims. Do you see any info that leads to why it should be saved? If you find it, I'll spearhead the rescue. I've done some search on my own, as I said in the nom, and can't find anything.  :-( I want to be an inclusionist but I dunno about this one. Help! OlYellerTalktome 21:09, 11 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Can I save this page?

You put the page Scatter Brothers Productions up for deletion, and I understand your concerns. The company is still up and coming, but is growing fast. It may not have A LOT of notoriety through press, but are very well known in the Tampa Bay/Central Florida film industry. Is there any way to save the page from deletion? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dougietuff (talkcontribs) 16:04, 12 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Posting about chefs

I moved your posting about chefs from the F&D Article guidelines talk page to the main F&D talk page. The place you placed the discussion will not receive any responses. --Jeremy (blah blah) 19:37, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello there, I'm not as active on Wikipedia as I used to be, but I completely agree that the CMC's should be recognized on Wikipedia. References could come from the ACF website, newspaper articles, or anything not directly connected to the chef. For instance, Chef Hartmut's webpage for his restaurant would not be appropriate to source from as per wikipedia guidelines. Let me know if I can be of some assistance.--Chef Tanner (talk) 17:47, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Re your message here: Hey, that was a joke. You're not a talk page stalker; you're a talk page watcher. Please keep my page watchlisted, so that I can have someone to rely on if I'm not on Wikipedia when a new user needs help. I have your talk page watchlisted, and I'll do the same for you (if you consent, of course). In this case, I didn't log on to Wikipedia until five hours after their request for help. Your help saved a new user from waiting five hours for a response. Cunard (talk) 22:41, 19 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
