UKTV Gold
It looks like UKTV Gold split into two new channels recently (one of which kept a similar name, but became a comedy channel), but maybe Freeview is lagging behind, or it's not rolled out across all areas yet. --McGeddon (talk) 14:10, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

Unexplained reverts
It's good practice to give an edit summary, so that other editors can see why you made a change. Looking at the article history, you actually seem to have a good argument for Okaro not being included in the list - it would have been good to repeat that, however briefly. (Even "as per earlier revert" would have helped.) --McGeddon (talk) 17:22, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
Police officer reverts
No problem. --McGeddon (talk) 19:13, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
Hello again. Regarding your demand that I "stop overriding [your] decisions about material" - if you're talking about this edit, I was just adding back a sourced sentence, after you had (I assumed accidentally) deleted it when clearing out unreferenced material. --McGeddon (talk) 15:31, 27 October 2008 (UTC)
Redlinks
Could you please stop delinking red links. There's absolutely no mandate to do this, as redlinks become bluelinks in time. As you may notice from the AC and DC articles, I am steadily creating articles for all these officers, so I'm not sure why you feel delinking is necessary. Thanks. -- Necrothesp (talk) 22:45, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
Hello, I do not appreciate you reverting all my changes. Please see this from my view, I have contributed to the articles in question by removing the brackets to red links, and generally tidying them up. And it seems bad faith, when you just come along and revert them, if you disagree with one thing such as the "service" not being used back when the DDI was a rank, then just change that. Please think about the time I have taken to do the work, which is not in breach of any guidelines. I am not going to edit war, you win. But just think about it please, and maybe in the future observe WP:AGF and WP:OWN, thanks. Police,Mad,Jack (talk · contribs)☺ 09:14, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
- Please understand that I am not reverting your edits because I think I "own" the article or because I don't believe that you were acting in good faith, but because I do not believe your edits have generally improved the articles. In fact, they have in several cases actually lessened their usability. If they added to the articles I would certainly not revert them - if you look through the edit histories of articles I have created you will see that I don't just revert edits for the hell of it. Please note the following points:
- Removing red links is specifically mandated against in the guidelines unless they will never lead to an article. The links you removed blatantly do not fall into that category.
- I have not simply reverted your edits. I have incorporated many of them (such as more specific linking), as you would see if you examined the edit histories.
- Short or stub articles do not need to be divided into sections. This is only necessary for longer articles. The suggested minimum article length for section headings is 400-500 words.
- Our opinions on "tidying" appear to differ. I think the articles were considerably tidier before. This is the reason I reverted some of your changes, not because of any false beliefs in ownership.
- You seem to be telling me that I shouldn't object to you changing an article I put a lot of work into, but also seem to be upset that I am changing work that you have done. Maybe if you think about it you will see the irony in this? Please don't take things like this to heart. I'm sure your edits were in good faith, but I'm afraid that in general I don't agree that they improved the articles in question. -- Necrothesp (talk) 10:21, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

Reverting
"Please stop reverting my edits, just to prove a point." - please stop accusing me of only editing articles to prove some continually unspecified "point"; it's needlessly antagonistic, and very bad faith.
If you're talking about Metropolitan Police Service, I fixed up a compromise edit after you reverted a new user's well-meaning edit entirely, and I corrected some grammar which you reintroduced to the article. Both of these were for the good of the article. --McGeddon (talk) 18:55, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

But it was a bad faith revert, my edit was good faith. And instead of just reverting as soon as the page saved, you should have instead edited it, which would take little more than the time it takes for the page to load again, with your revert. Bad faith edits (which mine was not) you should revert, but please see this from my point of view, I was only trying to help, and it was only fixing a link that was not right. - Mine was not a "bad faith revert". Your edit could be in the best faith in the world, but it can still be reverted if incorrect. All I could see was the dif, from which your edit was in good faith but a mistake. If I had the time to check the copy of the page, and had seen the redlink you were trying to correct, I would have corrected it. I don't, however, have the time to check the full copy of each page. Oh, and for the third time, please state what you believe needs cleaning up on the relevant talk pages. ninety:one 16:27, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Central Operations
We can just leave them at the bottom for now, but I've never heard of Met officers reffering to the ASU as a CO designation so I think you're right. I have a feeling that they all come under one OCU, but again I'm not sure. However, I did change C&V back because there is no evidence of it being called "Operation Clubs & Vice". “ | Specialist Operations is part of the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) and is divided into three sections known as commands. Within these three commands, there are seven units whose roles are to help keep safe people who live in, work in and visit London. | ” |
it looks like the structure is something like this:
- Specialist Operations
- Counter Terrorism Command
- Specialist Protection (Command)
- Royalty Protection (Command)

One of the bad things about doing stuff online is the fact that anything you screw up can and will be used against you. In regards to this edit [2] specifically, to my understanding of WP:NPA and WP:HARASS it does not look like a personal attack per se, but instead appears to be an attempt to embarrass you by pointing out your recent mistakes (these two look particularly bad [3], [4]). And as you might guess, there are no rules here prohibiting others from pointing out our mistakes.
Likewise when it comes to shared IPs (like those from Epsom College), the person behind the IP can change rapidly and often (I see that EC has 720 students, but they only have a couple of hundred IPs in their range), so most admins would just follow WP:RBI assuming that the specific IP has received three or four escalating levels of warnings this month and continues to vandalize. Giving them any more of your time or energy is probably just a waste. Additionally I should add that as per WP:USER, editors -both registered and anonymous IPs- are permitted to remove messages at will from their own talk page; except under specific situations outlined at WP:BLANKING, people who revert others' edits to talk pages may be blocked for harassment.
Now all that said, do not despair! Everyone knows that Wikipedia's rules are a byzantine collection of policies and guidelines that everyone screws up sooner or later. The best advice I can give is to keep an open mind when you are disagreeing with someone (my general rule of thumb is that most editors with more than 5000 edits know what they are talking about, so if we are disagreeing on wiki policy or guidelines, I need to go re-review those rules as they might have been changed without me knowing) and keep a positive attitude.
Please feel free to drop me a line if you have any other questions or issues. While I recognize that you are from the UK (the same nation as my ancestors), I would like to wish you a happy Thanksgiving regardless. One of the things I am thankful for is that Wikipedia has hard working, dedicated users like you! Thanks, Kralizec! (talk) 15:17, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

I do not know them personally, and I do not think I have dealt with them before. So nothing springs to mind, but going on that they blanked it once, then replaced it with something like "have you got a fetish for the police", its probably the case that they just have a personal hatred for the police, which I can easily believe considering the vandalism seen on a day-to-day basis on the articles police and police officer. I don't have access to the reference quoted so have to take your word for it that the police classify the G3 as an assault rifle, however under most circumstances the G3 is classified as a battle rifle, I've amended the entry to reflect this and hope that the compromise is acceptable.KTo288 (talk) 17:57, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi, I reverted your changes to ranks on the bill character list page. The ranks are generally managed by the template, if you want to see things displayed differently it's best to do it on the template because that will change all of them, rather than having to do them manually. Covert policing in the United Kingdom
Hello Jack, was reading this article with some interest and noticed the following statement;
Most territorial police forces in the United Kingdom do not have a unit dedicated to covert policing, and when one is needed for surveillance, uniformed or Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officers wear civilian style clothes instead of their uniforms.
I see you've provided a reference for this, however, the majority (if not all) forces have dedicated covert surveillance teams, Merseyside Police have the Dedicated Surveillance Unit, Warwickshire Police have the Crime Surveillance Unit, West Midlands Police have the Force Surveillance Team and so on and so on...All dealing with pretty high profile cases of their own without the assistance of the Met, especially large metropolitan forces such as Manchester and West Midlands.
There is also the distinction of plain clothes policing (catching them at it) and surveillance policing (gathering evidence). I don't know if you want to alter the article to reflect this or whether you want me to do it? Let me know. --Factorylad (talk) 22:56, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

Brixton Riot 1985
Oh yeah, fair comment, anyone on the streets during a riot who isn't a policeman (or possibly policewoman) is by default a rioter. I have no complaint and it was nothing personal. The police do many good things but in a riot situation their primary duty is to keep the Union Jack flying. They know this and anyone who doesn't deserves all they get. There were two days in 1981 when the Union Jack was not flying over Brixton. And maybe half a day in 1985. Anyway you seem like an interesting person. I am currently writing a Virtual novel about Brixton. My heroine is a black policewoman. I may be pumping you for information about polkce procedure and the like. Cheers. Your welcome. Seeing that your a religious man, today at school we was watching a video in Religious Education about a weeping statue, do you believe they can actually weep (If you dont mind me asking of course, just that I thought you would be a good person to ask, seeing whats on your userpage) Thanks, Police,Mad,Jack (talk · contribs)☺ 17:58, 27 January 2009 (UTC)
- Hi again Jack. Statues definitely can't weep - I've got statues in my church and in my house, and they never cry, because they're made of plaster or wood, and they don't have tear ducts. So the 'default' answer is, of course, that statues don't and can't cry. However, I DO believe in miracles, and a miracle is when God causes something to happen that shouldn't be able to happen according to the normal laws of nature and science. For example, the first miracle that Jesus did was to turn water into wine at a wedding reception in Cana, Galilee, when the guests had drunk so much that the original wine supply had run out. We all know that water can't suddenly become wine, therefore it was a miracle. In other words, because God made the laws of nature and science, God can break those laws as well - but he only does so for very special reasons. So, back to those statues! I think that God CAN make a statue weep if he has some special reason for doing so, or thinks it will inspire people towards some particular role. It's not normal, and it's not usual, and we certainly have to watch out for people trying to trick us with 'false miracles' because they want to make a quick cash profit; but after all of that, yes, miraculously God CAN make a statue weep if he wants to - but it would be a very rare thing!
- On the police front, you've so inspired me with your thank you message that I've finished off the other ones. I've just got a new puppy, a week ago, (not sure if Facebook will let you look, but if so, here's a picture of him: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=1971240&op=1&o=global&view=global&subj=560306718&id=611561562) and we're still house training him, so there isn't much spare time at the moment! However, I sat down and made myself do all the insignia for the Chief Officer ranks - have a look - they're all there now.
- I see you're from East Anglia. I'm in London, but I used to live in East Anglia - in Suffolk, in a small town called Halesworth. Enjoy the police insignia! Timothy Titus Talk To TT 19:34, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

- Hi Jack. Many thanks for the GDBarnstar - very much appreciated! Having finished the generic police ranks template, and the Met Pol version, I also completed the Isle of Man version, complete with their rather splendid epaulettes which have (at least for PCs and Sgts) a metal force crest above the collar number. I'd been meaning to do this for some time, since the IOM Police are cited on the Police ranks of the United Kingdom page as an example of a force with fewer chief officer grades.
- Ah, the puppy...! Sorry Facebook wouldn't let you look. The reason I first mentioned him to you is that I thought you might quite like the breed - he is a German Shepherd, as generally used by most forces as a General Purpose police dog. They're not great for drugs or explosives detection, but they're brilliant for searches, tracking, and for catching and disarming criminals. We had an attempted burglary at my house 3 weeks ago during the night - I disturbed the burglars and chased them down the street. The Met were brilliant, and we had 8 officers here within a few minutes of my 999 call, but we also decided to add a big dog to the family unit, and a German Shepherd seemed the obvious choice! At the moment he's a little bundle of fun, but he's growing fast and will soon be a formidable guard dog. Timothy Titus Talk To TT 11:11, 30 January 2009 (UTC)
Hello Timothy. Your welcome for the Barnstar, you did plenty of hard work on them templates, and I saw you what you did on the IOM template, which was good of you. On the puppy front, its a shame that Facebook would not let me look. German Sepherd is one of my favourite breed of dog, one of the reasons being that they are used as GP dogs. Sorry to learn about the burglary, but good on you for chasing them. Glad to hear that the Met were good, they have had a hard time recently. Dont blame you on adding a big dog, I imagine it would certainly deter. Request for adoption
Hi! I'm contacting you because user ChildOfMidnight suggested I seek a wiki mentor. I'm working on a new article Next Generation 9-1-1 (my first), and I have some questions. I saw that you were interested in law enforcement, and have contributed a lot in that area. I also saw that you were from the U.K. Presuming you are not that familiar with how emergency services operate in the U.S. I thought you might be able to suggest where I need to explain things better so that someone unfamiliar with the subject would get a good enough understanding. But I also have a number of other questions. I do see you've adopted another user, and I don't want to burden you, so if you don't have time just tell me, and I'll seek another mentor. I have noticed that the edits you made to the "United Kingdom and the Commonwealth" section had removed the section on Senior Sergeant, along with any references to Australia or Scotland. Bravo Two Zero Discovery/Compromise heading
I don't see a major problem with you using the term "Discovery" for the heading, but my concern is that in the three books I have read (B20, 1TGA and RealB20), all of them refer to it as "compromise", rather than "discovery". Like "discovery", "compromise" too is a normal english word, with no specific military or technical definition. It's use in the literature is the same as it's regular use, and is therefore equally understood by any reader of English language. The real added bonus is that "compromise" is consistant with the literature, where as "discovery" is not. Your argument sounds similar to writing an article on the 'Space Shuttle', but using the term 'Winged Space Craft' - both of which are easily understood, but only one of which is found in the literature... What do you think?Mr Pillows (talk) 05:58, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
- You present a good argument. Where I was coming from in renaming "compromise" to "discovery" is that it is possible that not all readers are familiar with that term, but reading your message above you have managed to persuade me. Please feel free to change it back. Police,Mad,Jack (talk · contribs)☺ 14:12, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
RE: Personal attacks on other editors
You are completely correct Police,Mad,Jack. I lost it for a moment because one of my discussion posts was vandalised by an unregistered user who left my signature underneath his edit. It appeared that I had posted the statement, when it was actually text modified by the unregistered user. Masquerading as another user, is one of the worst online behaviours I know, and it really got to me. The person I snapped at, snapped back, so I think we both got it off our chests. The argument concerned verifiability. I have read, and subsequently directed the user to Wikipedia:Verifiability.Mr Pillows (talk) 15:08, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
- I certainly did not realise that they had faked comments in your name. I must admit, in that case I would have been tempted not to say anything at all, and for the record that would have annoyed me too. If you have any more problems with the IP user faking your comments warn them with an appropriate template for the situation off of this page. Nice work by the way on the Bravo Two Zero article, by the way, I just thought I would let you know that you do not have to put quotes from out of the book in italics, referencing them will be fine instead. My method was perhaps not legally right, but I still stand by my resentment of denying Andy McNabs right to go only by his pseudonym in public. We (you Police,Mad,Jack, me and others) have been modifying and finally agreeing (I thought) on the text '..is a pseudonym for security reasons' on the McNab page. Maybe a 3rd opinion would be valuable, so what about it P,M,J? PS 'fake a comment' is rather harsh, I changed McNabs supposed real name in Pillows post into 'Andy McNab'and it was not my intention to do it unsigned. I do apologise for that part, doesn't mean I'm sorry though.206.122.102.52 (talk) 12:55, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

I've been looking at the history of this article, and noticed you have been involved with it for a long time, so you are probably the person to ask. The history shows that many of the edits I have recently performed, have been performed previously and then undone, without appropriate explanation. The fact that Asher reveals McNab's first name to be 'Steven" has been previously included in the article and properly referenced, multiple times, yet it keeps getting deleted, usually by unregistered users, and always without any specified reason. It is highly relevant to the article and comes from a published, printed source. This means it has been legally vetted by the publisher, and is therefore held to more reliable than a daily newspaper or any web source (see Wikipedia:Reliable_sources), especially internet fan-sites, which appear to be the main source of references in the article, and worst of all, McNab's own website. Self published sources should not be used where: the material is unduly self-serving or there is reasonable doubt as to its authenticity or the article is based primarily on such sources. In this case, there is undoubtedly reason doubt (pun intended) to McNab's claims as multiple published sources have shown! I have also noticed some of the editors looking to you for guidance on the matter, which is what I am doing now.
- Why do some editors keep removing relevant, and properly sourced material in favour of un-sourced internet rumours regarding national security?
A quick search of the current discussion page additionally shows much dissatisfaction with the neutrality of the article, something that I have put great efforts into fixing, though I now find I'm not the first to try this, and will probably have my efforts undone without justification. I discovered that there used to a be a properly referenced section in this article devoted to criticism, which included the published, and referenced statements of Chris Ryan, Michael Asher, Peter Ratcliffe, Mike Coburn and Malcolm McGown. These were not mere internet rumours, they were properly constructed, legally vetted, and published, printed statements by colleagues and scholars of McNab regarding his credibility... and yet they were deleted without appropriate explanation.
- As an expert on the history of the Andy McNab article, what are your thoughts on the matter?
Thanks in advance,

Gene Hunt WP:OR
Yes, I agree that "some WP:OR" was inserted into the article; I intentionally left out the line about the Greater Manchester Police. But if that and the "matron" were the only two pieces of WP:OR that you noticed, you should have just corrected those sentences, rather than reverting all of Miley's edits.
(For what it's worth - I don't know if it's ever mentioned in the show, but Dobbs does seem to fit the definition of a "police matron".) --McGeddon (talk) 10:10, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
- It is never mentioned in the show, but I suppose you could call her a matron. However, a book I own says that from 1922 they were phased out, the only other ones that existed from then were "court matrons", the last one of them retiring in 1996. It also says that matrons were replaced by WPCs, which if, is the case surely it would be better to call them WPCs. WP:Hornbook -- a new WP:Law task force for the J.D. curriculum
Hi Police,Mad,Jack,
I'm asking Wikipedians who are interested in United States legal articles to take a look at WP:Hornbook, the new "JD curriculum task force".
Our mission is to assimilate into Wikipedia all the insights of an American law school education, by reducing hornbooks to footnotes.
- Each casebook will have a subpage.
- Over the course of a semester, each subpage will shift its focus to track the unfolding curriculum(s) for classes using that casebook around the country.
- It will also feature an extensive, hyperlinked "index" or "outline" to that casebook, pointing to pages, headers, or anchors in Wikipedia (example).
- Individual law schools can freely adapt our casebook outlines to the idiosyncratic curriculum devised by each individual professor.
- I'm encouraging law students around the country to create local chapters of the club I'm starting at my own law school, "Student WP:Hornbook Editors". Using WP:Hornbook as our headquarters, we're hoping to create a study group so inclusive that nobody will dare not join.
What you can do now:
- 1. Add WP:Hornbook to your watchlist, User Hornbook to your userpage, and ~~~~ to Wikipedia:Hornbook/participants.
- 2. If you're a law student,
- Email http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:Hornbook to your classmates, and tell them to do the same.
- Contact me directly via talk page or email about coordinating a chapter of "Student WP:Hornbook Editors" at your own school.
- (You don't have to start the club, or even be involved in it; just help direct me to someone who might.)
- 3. Introduce yourself to me. Law editors on Wikipedia are a scarce commodity. Do knock on my talk page if there's an article you'd like help on.

- Who other than you states that it is "unnecessary uncommon and doesn't help in any way who John Simm is"? Portrayer is very close in meaning to actor and is a better description in my opinion. I have no interest in edit warring over something so little. I'll let you in on a thing that you obviously do not know about Wikipedia or Wikipedians - it is common courtesy to talk it out on the talk page before reverting yet again, which you clearly did not do in this instance. - Who other than you states that portrayer is the better word? That the word exists (note, MW gives actually no explanation) is not enough!
- That neither do help to identify John Simm's relationship to the aforementioned characters needs no explanation, if you merely read the sentence in question: "Hunt's relationship with Sam Tyler, lead protagonist of Life on Mars, has been described by the portrayer John Simm as them sharing a "love/hate relationship ..." From that text alone no one would know whether Simms plays Gene Hunt or Sam Tyler.
- I didn't discuss it on the talk page because there is nothing to discuss. The tone of your replies makes that abudantly clear - but if you don't want to edit war, be my guest. Simply don't do it!

A little help...?
Hi, my attempt to reignite interest in the Wikiproject seems to have failed. However, you seem to be the only active user left, so if you're interested, we could still really use a hand at The Bill. It's on hold as a GA and there are a few issues. Any help you could offer would be much appreciated. There is lengthy discussion at user talk:5 albert square, my own talk page and the GA review page (linked above). Please feel free to get in touch. HJMitchell You rang? 01:56, 10 November 2009 (UTC)

Hi there. Over the past weeks I majorly expanded the article on German-Japanese relations and really need people to go scan my contributions. Adopt-a-user reminder
Hello, I have completed a general cleanup of the adopter information page for the adopt-a-user project, located here. During my cleanup, I have removed several inactive and retired users. In order to provide interested adoptees with an easy location to find adopters, it is essential that the page be up-to-date with the latest information possible. Thus:
- If you are no longer interested in being an adopter, please remove yourself from the list.
- If you are still interested, please check the list to see if any information needs to be updated or added - especially your availability. Thank you.
- You are receiving this message because you are listed as an adopter here.

An update from adopt a user
Hi there Police,Mad,Jack! You may be wondering, what have I done to sound the alarm this time? Nothing. I'm messaging you in regards to the adopt-a-user program, which currently has a backlog of users wishing to be adopted. This doesn't make much sense, as we have a considerable list of users offer adoption, so there shouldn't be any backlog. I've begun to eliminate this backlog myself through a matching program, but I need your help to make it work. Of course, adoptees and adopters don't have to go through there, but I believe it helps eliminate the backlog because someone is actively matching pairs.
On the list of adopters, I have modified the middle column to say "Interests." It's easier working with other users that have similar interests, so if it's not too much to ask, could you add your interests in the middle column? For example, if I was interested in hurricanes, computers, business, and ... reptiles? I would place those in the middle column. Counter-vandalism and the like can also be included (maintenance should be used as the general term). The more interests, the better, since adoptees can learn more about you and choose the one they feel most comfortable working with. The information about when you're most active and other stuff can go into the "Notes" section to the right.
Finally, I've gone around and asked adoptees (and will in the future) to fill in a short survey so adopters can take the initiative and contact users they feel comfortable working with. We all know that most adoptees just place the adopt me template on their user page and leave it - so it's up to us to approach them and offer adoption. So, please take a look at the survey, adopt those that fit your interests, and maybe watchlist it so you can see the interests of adoptees and adopt one that fits your interests in the future.
Once again, thank you for participating in the adopt-a-user program! If you wish to respond to this post, please message me on my talk page.

Special Air Service
HI you reverted my edit without and edit summery so the reason for the revert is not clear. I amended the reference format to the correct style for a GA article. Moved the ref to the end of the punctuation per MOS and deleted the extra text that was not needed and not compliant with the reference style. If any of this bothers you can you explain why. --Jim Sweeney (talk) 14:15, 10 January 2011 (UTC)

Added template for SuggestBot
Hi,
Thanks for being one of SuggestBot's users! I hope you have found the bot's suggestions useful.
We are in the process of switching from our previous list-based signup process to using templates and userboxes, and I have therefore added the appropriate template to your user talk page. You should receive the first set of suggestions within a day, and since we'll be automating SuggestBot you will from then on continue to receive them regularly at the desired frequency.
We now also have a userbox that you can use to let others know you're using SuggestBot, and if you don't want to clutter your user talk page the bot can post to a sub-page in your userspace. More information about the userbox and usage of the template is available on User:SuggestBot/Getting Recommendations Regularly.
If there are any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me on my user talk page. Thanks again, Nettrom (talk) 23:40, 31 January 2011 (UTC)

Request for your Wikipedian Wisdom
As a Wikipedian you must be brilliant, therefore I thought you might have some value feedback to offer.....
I am applying for a few social entrepreneurship fellowships and was wondering if you’d be kind enough to review the application essays (~5 pages). My idea involves technology, organizations and non-profit stuff.
If yes, essays are here: http://db.tt/TTrUiVS1 and here: http://db.tt/WRTrqKTf. I welcome any/all feedback in any medium. Please tear it up alive, you can’t hurt my feelings. If possible, by a week from today.
Thank you so much for considering! This means the world to me. I thank you advance-- I am forever indebted.
Thank you,
Luke taylorluker1@gmail.com Taylorluker (talk)
