Press release
Since you're listed on the Wikimedia Press Team, I wanted to let you know (though you may already be aware) that we're working on a 1,000,000-article press release. I'm hoping to get the press release written by 7 September, then allow a week for translation, as we should reach the milestone mid-September. Right now we're working at Wikimedia press releases/One million Wikipedia articles if you want to join us. Any assistance is greatly appreciated. --Michael Snow 22:57, 30 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Press release translation
Thanks for your help, and your efforts to coordinate translations generally. I don't mind at all if people get a jump on translation, I just want to be sure that they do update translations to the final version. I will try and bring it to a final version soon, so that the translators can finish their work without worrying about last-minute changes. --Michael Snow 02:37, 5 Sep 2004 (UTC)
I have no problem with the creation of a separate British English version of the press release, although Chameleon could have done a better job of making it clear that he had left the original intact, instead of redirecting everyone to the "translated" version. I was fooled when I first went there, and obviously so were others. As for substantive changes to the text, in my opinion it should stay frozen. There are already people saying the press release is too long, and frankly they're right. It's inevitable that in a project like this, some people will have good ideas that there just isn't space to include, and we can't allow everyone who lobbies for a particular sentence to get their way. So I'm not thrilled about shoehorning stuff in after the writing part was supposed to be finished. I would prefer to let the translators do their work and have people start to focus on where to send the press release, instead of scribbling madly away on their exams after time has already been called. --Michael Snow 06:02, 10 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Tribble Trouble
No wait, that's not right. Transient Trouble! No, that's not it either. Translation Trouble. Yes, that's it: I don't know whether you had anything to do with that system-wide notice, this time. But having seen the annoucement, this time I didn't just start translating just to find the translation would not be used. No, sir, I first checked to see whether Fy: was on the list. No, it wasn't. OK, so no source text, no place to put the result, we'll have to assume we won't be bothered this time. Well ... . Apparently the one throwing an English message at Fy: used a different list. Apparently, this translation process still doesn't function properly. Aliter 20:10, 21 Sep 2004 (UTC)
You asked me to clarify what list I talked about since you knew only about m:Translation_requests/Fund-Sep. Exactly, that's the one. And you told me that that list was, of course, not comprehensible. So in what way would the individual wikipedian know this course? Wouldn't anyone not closely tied to the events assume that if a list was used to organise the actions of those involved, everybody involved would be on that list? Anyway, not all that important. Just what gets written when suddenly all the pages in a wikipedia get a header in some foreign language. Aliter 18:09, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Fact and reference check
Good work on the Attalus I article, esp. with the comments. Hopefully people will see that the ability to turn off fotenotes, for what ever reason, is what should be worked towards instead of deleting fact checking work.

Hi there. I've never been to a wikimeet before, but I might be able to make the Boston one. Since I'm a minor, getting my parents to let me go will be like pulling teeth...except much harder :). I wanted to know what is expected to happen in this wikimeet before I attempt this monumental task. What mood do you anticipate this wikimeet to be like? Do I need to bring anything with me? What (if anything) is going to be accomplished? Thanks in advance. I tried to find out on IRC, but I was told that it differs greatly between each wikimeet, and since you were in the last Boston wikimeet, I felt you were the best person to ask :). -Frazzydee|✍ 02:54, 5 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Survey
Hey, I got your message about creating a survey. The thing is that I've already asked some 500 users about whether they'd give permission to multi-license their contributions. And in at least one of those cases I managed to get a user who is no longer editing here anymore. Because this is such a large scale thing, I really need to ask everyone and a survey will not exactly serve our purpose here. It is not enough to ask "Do you multi-license?". Based on responses I could calculate the percentages of who feels what. About 10% opt out, but most of those are very nice about it. But I'd say about 1% of people asked get upset at the fact that I asked and say something (semi-)nasty back to me. The rest agree to multi-license in either PD or CC-by-sa, mostly for the latter. Of those people, about 20% will only go for U.S. states/cities/counties at this time. I've already got the rambot adding the notices to people's pages, after I did the first 350 by hand. Of course I don't mind having a question in a survey about it. It might be nice to know how popular the idea of a move to CC-by-sa is, but so far I've not wanted to bring up the question because it is so controversial. You can keep me apprised of the situation with the survey, but I'm not sure how much I can put in. It might be nice to ask a few multi-licensing questions anyway, just to feel the water. – Ram-Man (comment) (talk)[[]] 13:01, Dec 10, 2004 (UTC)
- Let me know when you have a draft of your survey. Maybe we need some questions like "Would you consider multi-licensing to CC-by-sa" (or maybe something less specific or with more options). And also: "If yes to the previous question, would you consider at some point agreeing to change Wikipedia's license to another license (such as CC-by-sa)?" Of course if you do the latter, be prepared for the nuclear fallout that the ensuing controversy will cause. – Ram-Man (comment) (talk)[[]] 14:46, Dec 10, 2004 (UTC)

Graph of statistics
Umm, I read someone's opinion on the rate of increase of article size, did not agree with the expressed opinion, and figured a graph and, indeed, an article would be a good thing. I'll doubtless update the graph sometime around the christmas break; I don't often update it since the trend is, more or less, no change. best wishes --Tagishsimon (talk)
Wikidemia
Hi Sj, Cormaggio here - having just found 'Wikidemia' today, am wondering what your involvement with the project is, ie. whether active or just interested? Have added a link to a page with my own questionnaire which was a tentative step into getting people's opinions - I see your involved perspective would be of help to the project, and possibly to my own inquiry (for my M.Ed). Basically, I can see these projects bouncing off eachother, if not conjoining to an extent. Talk to me, or email me if you prefer (through user page). Cheers Cormaggio 01:29, 16 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Whole Earth Catalog
Would you be offended if your "Whole Earth Catalog" were deleted from Wikisource? The problem with it is that it is encylopedic. :-) While this would be a perfectly good stub in Wikipedia, I don't see it going anywhere on Wikisource. It would be an excellent introduction IF we were going to carry material from the Catalogs in Wikisource but I presume that very little, if any, of this material could be included without infringing copyright. Eclecticology 04:54, 2005 Jan 3 (UTC)
- Thanks for replying. Now I know that more than that stub is planned. I don't know if page images are the best way to go, but I'll wait until a few are up before I make further comments. Eclecticology 17:16, 2005 Jan 4 (UTC)
I've noticed that you've begun (what I'm going to assume) is a complete List of Young Global Leaders. This leads me to a few questions:
- Why the odd, non-standard formatting?
- What is the standard?
- You're reading it. As opposed to:
- What is the standard?
Making a list by indenting a space. This renders as an ugly monospaced font. Enclosed within a box.
- What is the value of a yearly list of a few hundred names?
- Note the wikification.
- Note the pointless wikification. Of the 97 listings you've so far posted, only 10 individuals have active links (at least half of whom are as stubs), not to mention only 31 companies have links. So the value of duplicating in whole a 237-item list just to add red links is, at best, minimal.
- Note the wikification.
- Why no explanation of the list at the top of the list?
- It has one.
- It does now, I grant.
- It has one.
- Why have a list of members/honorees of an organization that doesn't even have an article about itself?
- It has one.
- Okay, I missed that, though I note it's only nine minutes older than this list.
- It has one.

Boot camp
Hi Sj — the boot camp sounds like a great idea. Let's see if it gets off the ground. One question: my welcome messages are in templates ( and ). I included the bootcamp template in the first of them, and everything seems to open out ok. It should update as the bootcamp template is edited, right? I don't want to start posting out-dated information. Is the bootcamp only going to be held this week? Thanks! — Asbestos | Talk 11:32, 2 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- W00T! Let's start it back up.
Draft survey
I'm not the best at scripting and the like, so I wouldn't be able to run any survey with fancy options and privacy to boot. But to be honest, when I made my draft I really had no idea what use it would be in the end and how it could help Wikipedia as a whole, it was more of a playing-around-with-the-idea thing. But I'm sure a large scale survey, especially of new users, but also of established users, would be very, very useful once it was finished and the results collated. Have you already tried to get yours off the ground, or is it still in draft mode? And would I be able to see it too :) I think the idea could get somewhere if there were enough momentum built up behind it. T.PK 05:32, 4 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Blogging
You asked me about my interest in good blogging software in Frisian. Did you want to bring software localized for Frisian to my attention, or did you want to enlist me in a translation effort? Aliter 13:46, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- I asked around but didn't find anyone interested in taking on the additional load of translating even more software. Aliter 20:43, 3 Apr 2005 (UTC)
BTW., the wiki complains that "This page is 64 kilobytes long. This may be longer than is preferable; see article size."; you might want to refactor, excerpt, summarize, archive, or delete some of the talk here.
This would probably help when trying to return to a previous conversation, reduce people's phone bills and keep the browser from crashing. Aliter 20:43, 3 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Quarto design chat: Sunday?
Hi zanimum. Lockeshocke proposed an interesting icy cover for the next Quarto; I thought perhaps you two could work together on it. And are you free sometime this Sunday to discuss the internal layout of the next edition? +sj + 03:05, 8 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Hi Sj... sorry, I'm overflowing with year-end homework projects this weekend. I guess I'm willing to work with LockeShocke on the cover design; there are quite a few things Wikimedia needs to iron once and for all, to keep designs consistant, between issues and languages. Would any weekday/night be okay to chat with you sj, or should we just set up a talk page somewhere and discuss over the course of a few days? -- user:zanimum

Signpost
Thanks for the offer, it's most welcome. In fact, since you're editor-in-chief for the Quarto, you're sort of the perfect candidate to serve as "guest editor" for The Signpost, if you're willing.
I'm planning to set up a "newsroom" page that will facilitate coordination. To make things easier for you, I think it might also be beneficial to have a deadline for reporters to get their stories done. Any suggestions on when we should set the deadline, to allow you enough time for editing?
About the style guide, I'm happy to answer any questions, it may force me to think more clearly about what I've been doing. Names of Wikipedians are sort of a complex issue, since it can involve real names, nicknames, pseudonyms, and even sigs. My usage has been flexible according to context, depending on their role and how the person is best known. For things with implications outside Wikipedia itself, I prefer real names. Some samples of how I tend to think:
- Jimbo -> Jimmy Wales for most things, Jimbo Wales when actually using his account on the site
- Anthere -> Usually Anthere, sometimes even when acting as Trustee if it's about interaction with the community, Florence Devouard if there's outside contact involved
- Mav -> Pretty clear role break, mav as an arbitrator and user, Daniel Mayer as CFO
- Brion -> I use (English-style) Vibber rather than the Esperanto all-caps VIBBER in his username
- I don't necessarily mimic people's sigs, but if the sig is different enough from the username and kept consistent, I'll follow the sig. For somebody like User:Dbachmann, I wouldn't refer to him as anything but dab.
Fortunately, linking helps fill in the blanks, so I always make sure to link the name of any Wikipedian when it's first used. --Michael Snow 18:32, 12 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Titanic
There is enough in the plot description to indicate that a nude portrait, a jewel, a pretty girl and an artist are involved. The picture you attempted to remove shows all four. For the rest, you really have to see the move--so it's fortunate that the company that made the movie has licensed its distribution on DVD. --Tony Sidaway|Talk 00:40, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Danny's user page
Why have you reverted all of the changes User:Danny has made to his user page for the past 8 months? Jayjg (talk) 17:33, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Hmm, good question... how odd. I wasn't editing anything at 10am today when this edit was made. I *was* looking for a link to Wikipedia:2004_Encyclopedia_topics this morning, which I finally found via Danny's contribution-history... I must have followed a "rollback" link in the process. Thanks for catching it. Following a rollback link apparently requires no confirmation and doesn't give you any indication of what has happened; it looks as though you just followed a normal link to the target page. I submitted a bug report to fix that...
- Unfortunately, I didn't get your message until Danny noticed the change himself and reverted it; how embarrassing. +sj + 04:59, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I won't be joining that online chat: it's after midnight for me, and I'm working something like "normal" working hours these days. I think my comments speak for themselves; obviously, my top choices can be gleaned from the stars I gave. I'd hope that the four articles to which I gave two stars will be at least serious contenders, and the ones to which I gave no stars will not get top ranking, but if there is, say, one exception in either direction I won't scream. If there is much more than that, I'd appreciate one more chance to weigh in before this is final.

Quarto news review
Hi sj - thanks for the invite to help out with news coverage for the Quarto, I'd be very happy to get involved. I've been doing articles about Wikipedia in the press for a few weeks now on the Signpost, so it would be quite easy to keep track of the major coverage worth including in a quarterly. Just let me know what you'd like me to do, and when! Worldtraveller 12:35, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Carpentry-stub
Hi Sj - I note you've created a new stub category. Did you realise that stub categories should normally be cleared by Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting before creation? That way they can be vetted to check that there are a viable number of stubs (at least 60-100) and that the category does not cross the existing stub hierarchy before the stub is created. In the case of carpentry-stub it looks okay (at least as far as the second point is concerned), but if you're planning to make any more categories, we'd like to know first! Oh, and if you're interested in helping sort stubs, we're always looking for new members of the project! One more thing - the single most important thing a stub template must have is a category. otheriwise, you're just consigning the stubs marked into the void, probably never to be seen by the editors who should be seeing them. I have created a Category:Carpentry stubs for the template, and am busy doing null-edits on the articles with the template to make sure they go in there... Grutness|hello? 09:39, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- On looking at the articles, things are a little worse than I thought. Most of them are about joinery rather than carpentry, and one of them is a neologism which is almost certain to be deleted by vfd. There is also no Category:Carpentry, which make a subcategory of it (Carpentry stubs) extremely unviable. I've redirected this to Joinery-stub, which does at least have the benefit of a parent category (Category:Joinery). Grutness|hello? 09:54, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Wiktionary
Why did you recently add the move to Wiktionary tag to User:203.173.161.41's talk page? This is inappropriate use of the tag, which is important because pages with the tag get added to a category to be moved. I'm assuming it was a mistake, and I've removed it. --Dmcdevit 23:27, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Thought it was something like that. No big deal, it's just that the program I use to Transwiki goes by those tags, so I have to manually clean them out first. Plus, did you consider telling the newbie? Most don't realize their mistake. --Dmcdevit 05:35, 22 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I read your message about your request for me to stop adding a link to the podcasting directory potkast.com. First off I am confused about not adding a relevant link. I hope you can clear this for me.

Sorry for being late with the article again, I had loads of stuff to do today. I'm now going through some pages to find something to write about in my featured items/new admins article. If you've got any ideas, I'd love to hear them. I should have something up in about 12-13 hours. Hopefully you'll still have enough time to edit it after that. Sincerely, Mgm|(talk) 21:11, Apr 23, 2005 (UTC)
- Bah, I couldn't find much to write about. Hope this is okay. I've got an initial draft at User:MacGyverMagic/In_Progress/featured16. I'll add something on the voting for the featured images, but I don't think I can tell something about the new admins. I already reported on Mindspillage who received a total of 41 votes. Wasn't there a banner because Phils' admin nomination had too few votes to reach concencus? Mgm|(talk) 15:24, Apr 24, 2005 (UTC)
Signpost articles
Hi sj, it sounds like you hadn't seen that I'd put links to a couple of articles in the 'ready for editing' section of the Newsroom. I'd done one about the IWC and one about the Sanger memoirs. Been delayed doing press coverage but am drafting it at the moment, see User:Worldtraveller/In the news. Also, I mentioned above but you might not have seen my message that I've drafted a press coverage article for the Quarto, at User:Worldtraveller/Quarto:In the news. It still needs a bit of work but I hope it's the kind of thing you're looking for. Worldtraveller 19:17, 24 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- By the way, are you already writing an article about the pope news coverage? If you need someone to write it, I'd be happy to put it together. I noticed it in the suggestions section but no-one seems to have claimed it. Worldtraveller 19:27, 24 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- OK, news and pope article are now also up there for editing at the newsroom, all yours to hammer into shape and make publishable! Worldtraveller 21:22, 24 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Afrocentrism
Hey Sj! You suggested that since I made changes to Afrocentrism that I talk about the changes on its discussion page. This makes a great deal of sense, so after I made the changes I actually added a section summarizing why I made the changes I did. But that section disappeared--I assume it disappeared when the changes reverted. I will attempt to resummarize what I wrote. Thanks!

I've noticed the signpost hasn't been updates yet while Michael usually does it around noon my time. Worldtraveller's articles look fine to me and you already checked mine. Can I update or is there anything I'm not seeing? Mgm|(talk) 17:34, Apr 25, 2005 (UTC)
- Since it looks like you'll be offline for a while. I decided to be bold and update the signpost to make sure it's not delayed too much. Hope you don't mind. Mgm|(talk) 18:49, Apr 25, 2005 (UTC)

Wikimedia Quarto and press
Hiya dearie.
Basically, I think the board report page is all set. I asked Jimbo and Angela to review it for accuracy (in particular hosting offers...) 2 days ago... and no feedback probably mean all is well :-)
So, I put all parts of it in proofreading stage and once Ruth is happy with it, it can be translated anytime.
Another point : Personally, I am very proud of this article [2] and I would love to have it cited in Quarto. How to say... it is one of the first time we really go beyond the usual presentation of wikipedia, to try to work out some big issues, related to our interaction with the outside world... It is unusual journalists ask such questions, so it was a great opportunity and I hope it can have some impact on freeing information in Europe somehow. A little additional stone.
Still... I do not know where to put it :-)
Last point : the board letter. I asked Angela if she wanted to write it, and she did not answer. So, I decided to did it myself. Then I changed topic 3 times and am still undecided. I think the topic I wish to talk about is elections or rather past year. But I am not sure it is wise. So.... I let my holidays rest on that and will come back on the matter. Ideas welcome. user:Anthere

I'll have my article ready late tonight or tomorrow morning (GMT). Since you're updating the Signpost on Tuesday's I don't think it'll be a problem. Just letting you know. Mgm|(talk) 17:25, May 7, 2005 (UTC)
- Damn, I slept in. I hate it when I can't act on promises. I should have it done in less than 10 hours. Sorry about yet another delay. No need to call in blankfaze. I really want to do this before I'm gone next week. Mgm|(talk) 11:05, May 8, 2005 (UTC)

Was just starting work on my press coverage article, but I see Lotsofissues has listed a press coverage article under work in progress. If Lotsofissues is doing it, then I'll not bother working on mine, but if you still need it, I'll finish it off tomorrow morning. Worldtraveller 23:02, 8 May 2005 (UTC)

I mentioned it ealier to see if it was the kind of thing you had in mind for the Quarto but hadn't heard back from you. It's at User:Worldtraveller/Quarto:In the news, all yours to use if you want. Bootcamp
Hi Sj —
I've been leaving bootcamp templates on my welcome messages since the beginning of February: is it still happening? I left a message on the project's Talk page a while ago, but it seems that no one keeps that on their watch list, which seems to confirm my suspicions.
I remember I noted a while back on your talk page that I didn't want to start posting out-dated information. Perhaps if the boot camp is no longer occuring the template ought to be blanked and then deleted, so that any instances of it lying around don't mislead people (and any fools like me who are still posting it will no longer have the template on their welcome messages, not having realized that the message went out of date months ago...).
— Asbestos | Talk 08:11, 11 May 2005 (UTC)
- Aha! I keep it on my watchlist, which is too long... there have been sporadic bootcamps when publicized, and I keep an eye on the IRC chan. But there has been no spontaneous interest in it. I wonder how to reinvigorate it. The idea is certainly more useful now for having some initial content... +sj + 19:12, 11 May 2005 (UTC)
- Ok, that's cool. I'm hardly ever on IRC, so I wouldn't have noticed: it was just the apparent lack of activity on the project page that made me wonder. No idea how to raise interest levels in newbies, though, though of course from my experience the learning curve here at WP is fairly steep, so maybe by the time they've figured out what "IRC" means they've already written their first article. Anyway, good job keeping it up. — Asbestos | Talk 21:33, 11 May 2005 (UTC)
- Well, the initial idea was for it to be on-wiki. With courses for users to pass through... I think wondering about how to do that best diverted attention from getting people to come chat on IRC. But since it was the same crowd of IRC users each time; maybe an on-wiki correlary would be better. With an IRC session as one of the last steps. +sj +
- I'm interested, by google. See my post on Wikipedia_talk:Bootcamp Quinobi 16:26, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hi SJ, hope all's well. Sorry about temporarily stealing control today :) I meant to let you know what I was up to, but was fitting in editing between real work and got distracted by a meeting. Was glad to see the counter-coup later on! I'd like to think of myself as a kind of Thomas Sankara of the Signpost, but I fear I may be more like the Captain of Köpenick...
I didn't have time to do anything more than the press coverage for this week's Signpost, but should be able to produce a few extra articles for next week's. Glad the press stuff for the Quarto was useful as well! Worldtraveller 22:31, 11 May 2005 (UTC)

Polls and surveys on SIGN
After doing a little work awhile back trying to fix up and better organize the Wikipedia:Current surveys page, I realized that polls and surveys on the Wikipedia are a real mess. Some never get announced except on their talk page. Others may only be announced on a WikiProject page. Some are posted to WP:RFC and/or Wikipedia:Village pump (policy), but not to Current Surveys; or vice versa. Only very rarely do they get the sort of attention and participation that Gdansk/Vote got. I realized that to do things well, that it would take the entire amount of my free time that I've budgeted for spending on the Wikipedia. Quite frankly, I'd rather spend that time on Japanese poetry, and Southern California articles, plus the occasional drop-in at the Stub-sorting WikiProject and WP:TFD. If I ever did anything more bureaucratic on the Wikipedia, it would probably be to organize a California or Southern California WikiProject. What you probably should do instead is find some young, enthusiastic, slightly obsessive Wikipedian who is looking for a big project to tackle. If you find somebody like that, I'll be the first to award them a Wikipedia:Barnstars. Perhaps you should suggest it to someone like Netoholic—a large task like that might help keep him out of further trouble. ;-) BlankVerse ∅ 02:15, 15 May 2005 (UTC)
- Hi there! I was discussing some policy-related things with BlankVerse, and he mentioned this column on SIGN and suggested that I consider writing it... so I'd like to ask you for some more information on what the general idea is, but in principle I'd be interested. Three step process
Thank you for beautifying the three step process that I help to make. It looks so much better. I should let you know some people want Template:Vfd2 to be unprotected. They claim it can be improved upon, but little do they know of the history and the background of the template. (And why it was protected in the first place.) -- AllyUnion (talk) 00:44, 16 May 2005 (UTC)

Catching up
Well, content wasn't reduced too drastically, and I've had weeks before where I wasn't able to do as much as usual. Considering that when I planned this vacation, I feared The Signpost might die entirely, I'm very pleased with the result, even with hiccups. I don't know that I could manage for long without Worldtraveller either. Thanks again for all the work you put in, hopefully now you can have a little more time to spare for the Quarto.
With respect to your layout mockup, have you checked it in skins other than Monobook? The visual effects (particularly colors) might not work as well in Classic, I'm not sure. I like the calendar idea more than I expected, though. When I saw it discussed initially, I thought it would disrupt the layout, but you've worked it in nicely. --Michael Snow 17:34, 19 May 2005 (UTC)
With foot planted firmly in mouth
I just read your message from almost two weeks ago about the TROLL report, and I admit that it slipped my mind which is absolutely inexcusable. I had a ton of relatives in the last two weeks and to top it off I had to run to attend to my mother for several days after she gashed her leg, and when I got back I zoned out completely. Is it too late for me to do some or all of this? I could do a sort of two-week wrap-up? Wally 19:17, 25 May 2005 (UTC)

writing history on Wikipedia
Hello,
I’m an historian working at the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University (http://chnm.gmu.edu/) and we are very interested in digital historical works, including people writing history on Wikipedia. In connection with a larger project on the history of the free and open source software movement, we’d like to talk to people about their experiences working on history articles in Wikipedia. Another Wikipedian recommended that I contact you. Would you be willing to talk with us about your involvement, either by phone, a/v chat, IM, or email? This could be as lengthy or brief a conversation as you wish.
Thanks for your consideration.

Hi Sj, I'm translating some bits of WQ2 in Dutch. There are few mistakes in the Dutch table of content ("Inhoudsopgave"), and I don't know how to fix them, it seems to be some kind of template, but I can't find it. Hello to you too
Hi, Sj, thanks for the note on my talk page. I think the "are you a Jesuit" question was the first note I had on my talk page, and I've kept it because I figured someone else would probably come along and ask it. (I actually was a Trappist for a very short time.) I got an email the other day from User:Essjay-R who wanted me to know he wasn't plagarizing my username! Contest
I have uploaded some sound files and am thinking of entering one or more in the Wikimania contest.
You note in the contest requirements that submissions must be GFDL or public domain. I ordinarily license my audio contributions CC-BY-SA only, because I think that the GFDL is inapplicable to audio clips. The reason for this is that we don't have any provision for supplying a transparent copy ("preferred form for modification"). This would vary from one audio clip to the next, and would at a minimum be a high-resolution two-track audio file, using lossless compression (or none at all). Such files aren't even permitted on the commons, making GFDL compliance problematic.
Did you intend for this provision to apply to audio files, or just to other types of media?

The constitution, Iran, Hoder and others!
Hello Samuel.
I wasn't aware of the initiative, if I may call so, on the constitution. I had a look at ur pages —user page and sth— and the links u provided, took me some time in total.
Now, let me know how many others —not Persians indeed— are curious to keep track of the progress. There are, as I saw, more than hundreds of changes in the page only for August. So if there are others like you who r interested, shall we make a page so I, or any other person, may make reviews of changes in English. Otherwise I would give you an informal report on the topic so far. And ah! The current constitution is full of jurisprudence terminology —the new is 180dgrs around!— That imdpedes makin accurate translations to provide others with comparisons.

You were very innacurate in the recent blacklisting. Some of blocked templates are free hosting providers - e.g. narod.ru is as popular in Russia as geocities or livejournal. As a result some hundreds of articles had been locked.

Iran constitution and Jambel letter
Hi there. Excuse moi! for the delay. I have been really clueless 'bout the constitution, wants one who's already involved. I tend to suggest check with the Hoder, perhaps. About the jambel's letter and all the quarto stuff. Though I personally was not in favour of persian wiki, I would have helped with the quarto. But i'm alone and perhaps if someone who is free in time enough and active in wiki would do better. However I did translate the interesting Jambel's letter that very week we spoke of it. And since it was short I edited it. But where to place it? And how reader's are get noticed? needs much more attempt than my tight schedule and short interest permits. Blocked users
Hi Fvw, thanks for all your great vandal-fighting. What is the policy wrt blocking open proxies? Some people seem to think they should never be blocked indefinitely. I haven't been following the relevant policy changes too closely... Cheers, +sj + 21:10, 25 September 2005 (UTC)
- Do they? I think there's at the least a pretty strong concensus that anonymous proxies can be indefinitely blocked and all other blocks on IPs should be limited, though perhaps I'm just out of touch. Nobody's challenged that part of the blocking policy yet anyway. Just make sure you verify that it's really an open proxy, I've seen far too many "oh, it's probably an open proxy let's block it indef" blocks. --fvw* 21:21, 25 September 2005 (UTC)
- I've started a discussion of this on that page? I seem to recall unfinished discussions about this when the auto-blocker was being worked on, and some of your recent blocks have been unblocked. I don't feel strongly either way; but I did block what looked like a proxy earlier today only to discover that it has special "only block for 15 min at a time" status... (see User_talk:24.71.223.140) +sj + 21:38, 25 September 2005 (UTC)
- I'll be with you there in a minute, just got to finish my watchlist. Thanks for pointing out those unblocks, Danny didn't have the curtesy to let me know he'd undone them.
- Keep in mind an open proxy and a proxy are two entirely different beasts as far as we're concerned. Normal proxies are used by many ISPs and though they can make blocking vandals more difficult they aren't a major problem. Open proxies on the other hand are a major problem as they allow vandals to hop from random IP to random IP without any blocks sticking. --fvw* 21:53, 25 September 2005 (UTC)

Thank you for telling me about it! I have added my name to the list. I plan to learn more Swahili, because at the moment my Swahili is only at basic level. I hope I will be able to contribute better then, but I will try to contribute while learning. --Revolución (talk) 22:03, 27 September 2005 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for the message about Meta the other day. I have an account related question. Awhile back I tried to create an account on wiktionary and it wouldn't let me. I checked to see... I'm sure the person who used it either doesn't check their hotmail, or doesn't care. I'm pretty sure it wouldnt have been me, only because I would have never created a hotmail account with my realname. Err, well unless it was "Bruce Wayne", or "Nevaahe Laura", which I doubt it is either.
- It wasn't 12 July was it? Thats when I tried to create all my other accounts.. I think, yup, that's when I sent Brion VIBBER the message. «»Who?¿?meta 07:34, 19 October 2005 (UTC)

Wikimania 2006 dates
Hi Sj,
Congratulations on your successful Boston bid! Thanks for the hard work. I live 7 hours from Boston in upstate New York- so upstate we call Albany "downstate," but I will probably be in Boston teaching during July/early August. I'd like to present a paper on the WP1.0 project and article assessment, as well as the chance to meet up with people like yourself and Stirling Newberry. Earlier dates may be possible for me, too. Do you know the exact dates when Wikimania will be held? And when are you going to put a 2006 banner at the top of your talk page?
Thanks, Walkerma 15:43, 28 October 2005 (UTC)
Thank you for getting back to me so promptly on my talk page, and even updating the banner! My tech skills would probably limit my contributions to any meeting (once people start talking about transclusions I'm lost!), and I don't even know what IRC stands for, but I may listen in if that's OK, particularly to get the exact dates. I think things are just beginning to get interesting on the WP1.0 team pages...Cheers, Walkerma 02:57, 30 October 2005 (UTC)

Polish translations
Sj said: Thanks for adding translations to Wikipedia :)
Thank you, Sj, it's actually becoming quite a good project to do, attempting all of these Polish translations are yet to be done. Since my pet project is biographies of soccer players, I thought the best place to take regional ones was from the own country's Wikipedia.
I just never realized that translating from Polish would turn from something casual to something I'm strangely enjoying.. I'm not sure at what point I should start to worry..! All the best. Bobo192 02:07, 29 October 2005 (UTC)

lots of issues | leave me a message 20:21, 5 November 2005 (UTC)
I've never seen discussion indicating that it should serve as an announcement board. Admittedly, important announcements have gone on there and and on the watchlist header in the past, but those were exceptional cases. We have other places to put announcements, and Wikimania, while certainly an important topic, doesn't impact the day-to-day editing of Wikipedia now. If we allow some announcements on the header, what will prevent it becoming cluttered? Anyways, those are just my thougts. I admit, though, that I probably should have contacted you first, and I apologize for that. But I just don't think that the RC header should serve as a message board. Many thanks! Flcelloguy | A note? | Desk | WS 00:33, 7 November 2005 (UTC)
P.S. Have you considered archiving your page? It took a mighty long time to load... :-)
- Archiving now :-) And the RC header has survived just fine for a long time without special protection, and generally without becoming cluttered. No need to optimize for problems that don't yet exist. +sj +

I am feeling absolutely horrible right now, because I cannot remember who you are! Nor, indeed, do I remember who or what "aD" is. Proposed conference session near Buffalo, New York
Hi Sj,
The State University of New York system, for which I work, is holding a conference May 30 - June 2, 2006 at the State University of New York at Fredonia near Buffalo, New York. The high flying title for the conference is "Envisioning Tomorrow's Classroom: Learning without Limits." There is a track on "Open Source, Collaboration, and Information Sharing," and I would like to set up a panel of "experts" to lead a 75 minute sequence of short (10-15 min?) presentations with questions from the floor, and possibly a discussion afterwards. I think the theme should be, "Wikis for teaching and academic collaboration." I can think of a few presentation topics: "Wikipedia as an information source," "Article validation and peer review in Wikipedia" and possibly "Wikis for research collaboration." Would you or anyone you know care to participate? I know that you live in the North East US, albeit a long way from Buffalo, and I know that Wikimania will probably take over your summer. If you are interested, can (you) suggest a topic for (your) presentation (possibly one of the ones I mentioned, or maybe Wikimania?)? I'd be particularly interested in a presentation on the more technical side of a wiki, something I know relatively little about. See the CIT website for more information. There will probably be about 600 SUNY faculty attending. The abstract is due January 20th. Cheers, Walkerma 16:12, 29 November 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for getting back to me on my talk page, I'm glad you are interested. Can you suggest any other knowledgable Wikipedians who might want to present? I think there is a lot of interest now from academia, ao it's important to "spread the word". I suspect that the academic community will find a lot of interesting new ways to use wikis in the next year ot two. Great news about the 1.0 developments. Cheers, Walkerma 05:10, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
Hello again. Can you send me an abstract covering what you would like to include? There is a librarian at Fredonia who would like to contribute the librarian's view on this topic, so it would be the three of us on the panel. She is going to supply an abstract to me by Monday. I think we would each present on our specific topic, and each take questions, then open things up at the end for general discussion. Does this sound good? I think the Nature review and the recent letter in C&E News indicate a growing interest from academia in both Wikipedia in particular and Wikis in general. Thanks, Walkerma 00:38, 12 January 2006 (UTC)
Important AfD
Hello again. I am contacting editors applies NPOV and NOR standards rigidly for their input on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of modern day dictators, where a consensus has yet to be established. Canberra Photos
Hi Sj, I would very much appreciate your input in the following argument. There seems to be a gang of users unwilling to allow anyone to interfere with there Canberra project without invitation. It was risky to take my camera on our school excursion to Canberra, but I did for the sake of the photos I could upload to Wiki. Needless to say, I'm deeply distressed over the reaction that has taken place. In particular, I would like to ask if the removal of all my photos off the Lake Burley Griffin article was a step forward in the usefullness of the page. Please either voice your opinion on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Canberra or write back to me. Thanks for your time (and I hope) support. Private use of categories...
Please gather your private Categories (e.g. Category:Sjk 2005, et. al.) into a private "root" category so that only one of them shows up on the "Uncategorized categories" report. Better yet, find a category to put your root into also.

- Much like it feels to welcome any other new user -- you hope they come back and edit again the next week... and perhaps someday find those random links on their talk-page useful. It's a bit more odd welcoming long-time editors from some other wiki project to a new wiki -- then there's always the chance, however slim, that they already know more about the wiki they're joining than you do. +sj + 05:33, 16 December 2005 (UTC)
Please, Mega Troll possibility needs to be looked at here
I am coming to you because there is nowhere else to go with this. I fear a mega troll (administrator) has been able to so firmly entrench himself within wikinews with meatpuppets and sockpuppets that he has obtained virtual control of the site. Now he is attempting to expand his power into Wiktionary. [8]. He simply uses his authority and extreme time availability to wear down and force contributors who are in his way off the site. He has also managed to drive a wedge between Admins and non-admins (basically forming a club-like clique among admins) to the point where a reasonable Rfda. [9] sits with 6 admins on one side and 8 non-admins on the other side of the Rfda. Amgine's dedication toward prioritizing group loyalty is manifest with this edit of his; "Your approach to Wikinews, in my opinion, is focused on articles. This is a common approach, but probably not the most valuable. I suggest you reconsider that Wikinews is not about articles, but about developing and maintaining an online community; the articles are secondary. - Amgine / talk 14:53, 23 October 2005 (UTC)". Amgine also uses multiple signatures leading to different sites and one that leads nowhere.Amgine Amgine[- Amgine 03:14, 9 November 2005 (UTC)]
The administrative abuses are historical fact and are listed below and although the "troll" accusation is based on circumstantial evidence; I am also showing it at the bottom. The section below is from [10]
- Here are the examples of administrative abuse. Amgine has had multiple long lasting disputes with many editors with Neutralizer being the most recent and intense. Amgine has not hesitated to abuse his admin powers by blocking/punishing editors like Neutralizer who disagree with him; even though wikinews guidelines clearly state that an admin should NOT block an editor with whom they are having a dispute (they should, instead, allow a different admin. to apply any necessary blocks to that editor). It now seems that the wikinews contributors can not get rid of Amgine no matter how hard they try; Amgine is able to deflect and explain away his misdeeds in a fashion that puts Shakespeare's "Artful Dodger" to shame. You may expect that he will become increasingly accusatory and employ vicious attack methods to get what he wants. Re Amgine; its a lot easier to get him in power than to get him out of power. Fair Warning !
- Amgine displayed his arrogance by summarily rejecting the resolution, suggestions of a mediator, Ilya (a wikinews Bureaucrat) after a mediation. "I do not accept your suggestion that I limit my administrative privilege use either to "vandalism or very clear violations of objective policies only, and to explicitly let some other admin deal with Neutralizer" or "submit a self-de-admin request." [13]
- Dan100's list.[14] of Amgine's "bullying and poor behaviour" (Dan100 is an admin.[15] in good standing at wikinews).
- Apparent vendetta blocks:
- A shows 4 of the spurious blocks Amgine levied against Neutralizer which were all later rescinded when other admins got involved [16].
- B shows the last block against Neutralizer done after Amgine and he clearly were in conflict
- 02:13, 6 November 2005 Amgine blocked "User:Neutralizer" with an expiry time of 6 months
- Admin abuse; blocking Ed Brown for 1 month [17] 04:27, 11 December 2005 Amgine blocked "User:Edbrown05" with an expiry time of 1 month ; Amgine soon withdrew that block as he claimed a "software problem" had been the cause of the unjustified block. This time selection of 1 month for a long standing good contributor like Edbrown shows an abusive use of blocking
- talk page blanked and frozen by Amgine ( in the middle of ongoing disputes with this same person) [18] This is especially interesting as he did it just one hour after the talk page was made to prioritize the question of whether Amgine and another admin. are the same person.[19] As you can see below (6); Amgine has no problem accusing others of being sockpuppets but when he stands accused? Hell; just delete the evidence.
- More Disruption by Amgine; not assuming good faith:
- Amgine accused vonbergm of being a sockpuppet; "I do not have reason to believe you are not a sockpuppet."[20]
- Just a few days ago he accused Edbrown of being a sockpuppet[21]
- Additional "Troll" indicators
- 1. Enigma = Amgine backwards
- 2. http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/User:Amgine says “left the project”
- http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Special:Log/block shows the opposite

I am interested in helping out with the Cyberlaw project. However, my cyberlaw know-how is that of spending many decades in the computer professional trenches, having been a computer programmer since around 1960, and had computer security responsibilities since ome time in the 1970's, but have no formal training in the law, and very little academic credentials. User:AlMac|(talk) 04:15, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
I put the project and each of the groups on my watch list, said hi to the other people who had volunteered to help, then took a look at what they had done so far. I made a few comments on some of the group's talk pages, of a welcome nature & perhaps one or two links of relevant places they might want to visit. I used the "what links here" to see what articles they been working on, and am amazed with the wide ranging interests. I also posted a few random remarks on the project talk page.
So what kind of stuff would you like to have on the project talk page, that I can add?
- Links to issues of relevance to cyber law ... a lot of which in my opinion is people like me with no formal legal training, trying to function in an evolving technological legal landscape.
- Links outside of Wiki ... due to my career, I have a number of sources on computer security topics ... I just have not yet been successful so far in presenting what I know about the topic on Wiki in a style that meets Wiki high standards.
- Links to computer subjects which have legal ramifications.
- Links to issues on Wiki that have legal ramifications.
- More links to tips for navigating Wiki, and adding to its contents. User:AlMac|(talk) 05:18, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
Rereading the main project page, I see it says that they not plan to do articles about cyberlaw, but that is listed as an example topic, and when I visited there, I saw they'd been active there, with a statement that their professor assigned them this article as one of the ones they need to fix up.
Another Suggestion / Idea Where there is the list of class teams, now in the format of TEAM-WHATEVER, I suggest right there to add TALK:TEAM-WHATEVER to each entry, just after it for navigation convenience, then if they do any secondary pages, also link them at the same place as ** indents. I can do this if you like, I just wasn't sure
- What's appropriate by outside helper
- Whoever's in charge approval
- Leaving some stuff to the students to learn, as opposed to illustrating how some Wiki stuff works
User:AlMac|(talk) 06:25, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
User:TeamLessisMore has a link to the Harvard Law Wiki on Cyberlaw, which I joined, using the same username as here. I not yet done anything there as yet. I am approaching end of week, which is usually more hectic for me than middle of week because of various reports people want based on, and digesting, recent activity where I work. User:AlMac|(talk) 01:14, 6 January 2006 (UTC)
- You know how a picture is worth a thousand words? Well I have a bad habit of using the thousand words when a picture will suffice. So I altered my user page at the Harvard Law School Cyberlaw Wiki to link to individual sub-pages for each of several sub-topics I wanted to comment on based on assignments the groups are tackling. For example, I saw a reference to not knowing if something is technically feasible so I added an short piece here about state of art of protecting a network from unwanted stuff, then as I see various groups tackling relevant issues, I will put something on their talk page linking to that. Are the Student Group Accounts at risk of being found in violation of the Wiki rule? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Blocking_policy#.22Public.22_accounts User:AlMac|(talk) 01:44, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
I plan to post this to the talk pages of the two administrators helping out with the project: +sj + and The Land User talk:The Land. Since I been burned a few times stepping on toes with different views than mine about what's appropriate, I have become a little less bold, and stated stuff on Talk pages before some input, giving folks a chance to encourage me, or say No. Acting on Sj guidance, I went ahead and made some comments on the various student group user pages, to try to help them out, and also on the Harvard site. (here I am there.)
I request that you first visit Wikipedia:Wikiproject Cyberlaw, noting the links I placed under Teams and Participants, and also in Structure, Note that Frontleft has added a couple of images. I have doubts that there has been a correct statement of copyright permission from Harvard students to Wikipedia. This may be a test to find out how soon WP finds out that there is a copyright problem, or it may be a student inexperienced in what needs to go on Image pages. User:AlMac|(talk) 07:30, 8 January 2006 (UTC)
I hope I have not violated WP:SPAM by promoting Wikipedia:Wikiproject Cyberlaw a few places such as suggesting that it be included in the Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/Newsroom/Suggestions and did you know there was a Wikipedia:WikiProject Law? Well, I put the project into the company of Category:Lawyer Wikipedians in hopes that some of them would notice this, without me needing to point it out to them individually. Hey SJ, there seems to be some dispute over the neutrality of the term conspiracy theory as applied to title pages. See here and Wikipedia:Title Neutrality. It seems to me that the process is not proceeding in the most useful manner and I wish to draw on your thoughts and experience. the issue seems to have appeared on the 9/11 conspiracy theories talk pageTalk:9/11_conspiracy_theories#Request_to_change_title. imho, preceding any valid fact with "conspiracy theory" evokes tin hat wackos, thereby deligitimating the fact and violating NPOV policy. emphasis on valid, provable fact. word, TitaniumDreads 22:01, 14 January 2006 (UTC)

Article improvement
It might be worth mentioning to the Cyberlaw students that some articles on the law are up for possible improvement, such as
- The Patriot Act. The current article is too long, needs to be split into secondary articles.
- HTTP cookie
- Family Guy of interest because it has been edited by User:Frontleft and now is up for featured article, although the votes currently running heavily against.
- In fact it may be worth scrolling thru the whole thing from time to time, to see what other people need to be done with some pretty good articles.
- I periodically visit here, link to some of the articles mentioned, put on my watch list, then return later.

Maria Pia
Dear Sj,you have asked "What works has Toledano authored under that name? They should be mentioned in the article...". In the wiki article she is mentioned because she was daughter of the king Charles of Portugal and she was considered a pretender to Portuguese Crown. When she claimed this dynastic rights her name was Maria Pia Saxe Coburg Braganza. This name is riported in her baptizimal certification and also in all her offiacial certifications 23,24. In her youth she assumed the name Hilda Toledano, a pseudonym in a dictatorial salazarist period in Portugal because she was pursued in this dictatorial period but she fighted Salazar for the return of democracy in Portugal. So for politic reason she assumed the name Hilda Toledano. With this name she was also a writer and she wrote many books. The names and the story of this books you can find in this site, wrote by an important french hystoric *Maria Pia: The Pretender, part I; part II; part III: part IV; part V. Her oppositors, the miguelist supporters, want hide the presence of her rights and mystify her story. Can you help me to give again the title "Maria Pia of Saxe Coburg Braganza" in her wiki page and change the name Hilda Toledano. The miguelist supporters with a user Muriel@pt have delete also the Rosario Poidimani page. Muriel has asked other her wiki-fiends to vote to delete this page. I think this people know nothing about this pretender but only for friendship they have voted! Please help me . Thankyou. M.deSousa 26 January 2006 (UTC)
An Esperanzial note
As I remember, the last spam that was handed out was on the 20th of December last year, so I think it's time for another update. First and foremost, the new Advisory Council and Administrator General have been elected. They consist of myself as Admin General and FireFox, Titoxd, Flcelloguy and Karmafist as the Advisory Council. We as a group met formally for the first time on the 31st of Decembe. The minutes of this meeting can be found at WP:ESP/ACM. The next one is planned for tonight (Sunday 29 January) at 20:30 UTC and the agenda can be found at WP:ESP/ACM2.
In other news, Karmafist has set up a discussion about a new personal attack policy, which it can be found here. Other new pages include an introductory page on what to do when you sign up, So you've joined Esperanza... and a welcome template: EA-welcome (courtesy of Bratsche). Some of our old hands may like to make sure they do everything on the list as well ;) Additionally, the userpage award program proposal has become official is operational: see Wikipedia:Esperanza/User Page Award to nominate a userpage or volunteer as a judge. Also see the proposed programs page for many new proposals and old ones that need more discussion ;)

Harvard Cyberlaw
Is it my imagination, or has the class taken a break? When it ends, perhaps the activity should be archived at Wikipedia:School and university projects, but I imagine that the class will be offered again to future bunches of students, but at what kind of time intervals? User:AlMac|(talk) 20:24, 31 January 2006 (UTC)
- What do you mean "class is broken"?
- I suspect that there may have been an effort to teach some stuff for the first time, and the educational process ran into some unexpected snags, or complications, which outsiders (like myself) may be unable to assist with.
- The kind of stuff I have done on the project here, and on the Harvard Wiki ... should that also take a break, or am I welcome to continue to lurk and speak up similar to my past contributions?
- I recently tried to help Wikify the article on Sarbanes-Oxley Act only to discover that it refers to an enormous volume of important topics (which I will identify on the TALK page of that article) that lack corresponding Wiki articles, so here is another area (like I found with ERP articles) that is absolutely critical to contemporary business, that Wiki has largely ignored. I suspect that this is because a lot of the Internet appeals to consumer interests and largely ignores other interests.

More WP1.0 stuff
Hi Sj,
Besides confirming that our proposal for the Fredonia panel was approved, I wanted to recruit your help an a WP:1.0 related matter (though it could be used right across Wikipedia). Things are really beginning to move over at WP:1.0 (User:Gflores has been great, and the WikiProjects are waking up to it too). You've seen his post about the new 1.0 COTW, right before this message. So we need to consider the next stages, including how we organize the articles, see discussion here. I am interested in how we visualize the organization of articles. If we picture the navigation of WP as a journey, I regard categories as being like road signs -useful, but rather limited. I'd like to see something more like a map. I've been playing with something I call a "tree" which covers a small piece of the hierarchy in chemistry. My tech skills are very poor, so my attempts are rather crude. You can see the top level of the tree here, click on the arrows to go up or down a level.
What I would like to know is:
- Is this approach the best way to organize a "map?" If not, how would you do it differently?
- Can you make the code more efficient, or else make things look nicer? I'm asking you since I know you're familiar with the wiki software. I used simple characters as navigational buttons, but I expect one could make something much nicer.
I'd like us to draw up a complete "map" of the articles to go (potentially) into WP 1.0. I don't want to invest a lot of WP1.0 project time on doing something the wrong way, so if you have time to take a look at this (and give help/suggestions) I'd be really grateful. Cheers, Walkerma 17:25, 4 February 2006 (UTC)

209.66.124.150 on Harvard wiki
I keyed this comment there first then cut & pasted it here also, and also a few other places, with my last posting to http://hcs.harvard.edu/~cyberlaw/wiki/index.php/Talk:Main_Page#.5B.5BUser:AlMac.7CAlMac.5D.5D_thinks_Harvard_Wiki_has_been_vandalized
I have a suspicion that this user-id has been used to do some vandalism to the Harvard Wiki. My suggestion to you is that you check out what their "contributions" have been, and see if you agree with me on that point.
What User:AlMac|(talk) is seeing:
- Useful tools are deleted, such as the link on top of your talk page at Harvard that people click on to add comments to your talk page.
- Correct urls are sabotaged
- Text inserted that is invisible to human eye but do things on the Internet
- Huge chunk of text, that people worked hard to create, have been wiped out.
Obviously I am inexperienced in fixing vandalism, so this might also be true of others at the Harvard Wiki, so it might pay to add something to an appropriate place explaining how we revert vandalism. AlMac 02:07, 8 February 2006 (EST)
Retrieved from "http://hcs.harvard.edu/~cyberlaw/wiki/index.php/User_talk:Sj" User:AlMac|(talk) 07:08, 8 February 2006 (UTC)
- More explorations on "209.66.124.150" such as http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&sa=G&q=%22209.66.124.150%22
- According to veteran's guest book
- Name: gfhaafajg <gfhaafajg>
- which may be phony
- Host: 209.66.124.150
- Name: gfhaafajg <gfhaafajg>
- Same IP address shows up a lot on various other guest books and web statistics for various nations blogs and has apparently been banned or black listed from a number of places and is a visitor to porn sites
I visited the Internet Storm Center which tracks worldwide malware & other troublemakers, like TV weather channel tracks ugly real world other than human bad stuff. That got me to http://www.dshield.org/ipinfo.php which told me that this IP address is in the USA and has as its ISP Abovenet Communications, whose Autonomous System account number is 6461, this ISP can be contacted via abuse@above.net and so far there have been only 11 hits against this IP, some of which may be false positives. Presumably for privacy reasons, the owner of this IP address is not identified.
- Googling for Abovenet Communications, Inc (the ISP of 209.66.124.150) got me to:
- http://www.abovenet.com/ and http://www.above.net/about/index.html located in USA and UK to serve businesses, so if I got the right place, our vandal is connecting from work ISP not home ISP.
- The USA offices are in White Plains NY

67.15.179.13 Vandal # 2 on Harvard Wiki
When it rains, it pours. I found another one, when I was trying to fix the Main page. The damage was to add a bunch of links such as
- Buy Viagra
which were coded to be invisible to the naked eye visiting the web site, but are no doubt intended for some kind of mischef. http://hcs.harvard.edu/~cyberlaw/wiki/index.php?title=Special:Contributions&target=67.15.179.13 not as many articles messed with as the other vandal, but you got a problem here that is going to mushroom, as more vandals arrive and mess with you.
I posted about this at both here and also at your Talk page at Harvard, because it seems to me high probability that a lot more of Harvard wiki is going down the tubes unless you figure out how to cope with this, pretty fast. For example, change the policy on people joining the Wiki that they not get to edit until after their e-mail address is confirmed.
I keyed that IP address into the same D Sheild link that was so helpful earlier, only to learn that it is an INVALID IP address, meaning ANOTHER problem here ... I got the number by cut & paste from Harvard Wiki history of articles vandalized. User:AlMac|(talk) 14:35, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

Vandals Mushrooming at Harvard Wiki
I was on Feb 10 Fri but did not get much done, mainly because my connection to the site was so sluggish. I do not know if you have any way of measuring what's going on with the servers and demand on them, like if most of the disk space been eaten, you got more users than you anticipated, you got a runaway job, a backup is trying to save while active, or other suspects. I considered the possibility that the problem was at my end, but I reboot my PC, visit other applications and web sites. It is only the Harvard Wiki that is experiencing sluggishness to the extreme.
My visits now have the pattern
- Patrol to see if there is any new vandalism, since my last visit, then document it on Talk:Main Page/Spam ... I added evidence of new ones Feb 10, including one that hit home on your page ... there's quite a bit where the students created a page, vandals trashed it, they did not notice ... I think that if they could get into the habit of signing their posts, it would be easier for them to tell what was done by a team mate and what was not
- I also plan to add a piece on back tracking the vandals using Google LINK: to see if there is any place dispatching them to you
- Add to my News page more stuff I think is relevant to the classes and students in general
- I have some more on Privacy NOT on the Internet, big time
- e-week has an article with the provocative title Insecurity on Demand plus their labs did a comparative analysis of major anti-spyware-places ... I just going to link to the article and outline the major risks and problems
- Duke University did a study on risks of outsourcing against careers of college graduates
- I also skim over new articles of students to see if there's stuff they studying that
- I think I can make a positive contribution, like I been doing
- I am interested in the stuff
User:AlMac|(talk) 04:40, 11 February 2006 (UTC)
- Saturday late nite & into Sunday wee hours, the site went extremely sluggish again. I figure either
- Backup is run "save while folks allowed on" which causes the computer to go slow for the folks allowed on, because the backup process is not well balanced with respect to what resources are used.
- The vandals are hogging the site.
- You are in the midst of the blizzard, and it has taken some of the communication connections down.
- You took my White List advice, and since I am from outside the Harvard area, it is very slow to get a round TUIT to check my cookies, then when I try to switch pages, it has to do same routine again.

Harvard Wiki week of Vandalism
- Visit the evidence page
- Print first 2 pages
- Note format I am now using
- Date some vandalism started
- IP addresses of vandals on that date
- Link to contribs for each of them
- Append that date if this one is a mult-day visitor
- Many IP addresses show up, do their dirt on that day, to one or more pages, then we not see again
- I want to particularly draw your attention to the IP addresses that show up one day, do their dirt, then show up another date to do some more
- If you check out the contribs on some of them, and agree that what they are doing is unwanted, then the multi-day visitors are top candidates fro blocking, before they come back yet another day.

- This argument goes around and around so often, we may want to consider a creating a series of templates for it. Something like whatsthebigdeal to which one may reply becauseitmakesittooeasy. The number of questions/responses being finite, it may make a reasonable wikiproject. The questions remains, however: would that project have a corresponding userbox template?

As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".
The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.

If you will feel that I do not live up to your expectation and renegade on my promises, please contact me. Maybe it was not a malice but just ignorance or a short temper. Place names considered unusual
Why did you delete Place names considered unusual when the result of the afd Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Place names considered unusual was no consensus? -- Astrokey44|talk 08:10, 24 February 2006 (UTC)
- History merge. See your talk :). +sj + 08:57, 24 February 2006 (UTC)
- Merging histories of distinct articles is generally a "A troublesome case" (see Wikipedia:How to fix cut and paste moves#A troublesome case). Please avoid doing this in the future.
- BTW, have you seen Wikipedia:Deletion review/List of interesting or unusual place names (2nd). -- User:Docu
- These weren't the canonical pair of 'distinct' articles. I think that the 'apparent' edit war one can see now in the article history is rather apt. There was little interesting history to the new article that needed much preserving... and the great bulk of the history of the old article was quite old and well-preserved by the merge. I think we should focus on restoring the useful old content and perhaps finding a better title, and on getting the 'two' communities of editors who were working on two different articles working in the same space. Just commenting on that DRV summary now; funny how there aren't enough serious people looking at the review process. +sj + 00:09, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

Wikimania information
SJ - this weekend I'm going to put my travel arrangements for Wikimania in order. However, there doesn't seem to be much information about accomodations available.
I heard they were going to offer dorms neaby the center at low prices? Is this true? Also, I have a friend (a non-wikipedian) who may want to attend. If she does, would it be possible to get a double? Lastly, I may come up a day or two early to help get things up and running - is that a problem? (If it's OK, then what day should I come up?)
Also, is there someone who I should be directing these inquiries to? Raul654 08:33, 24 February 2006 (UTC)
SJ - Thanks for your notes on my talk page and particularly for the personal reminder about Wikimania. I will go to one of these events soon, and its possible that Boston will the one - just need to convince my new wife that WP is worth the Atlantic crossing! Fortunately you can go humpback whale-watching from Boston, so that might be enough to twist her arm. As for the poker: I have accounts on several of the big networks, and struggle to beat the rake on any of them :). Pcb21 Pete 12:37, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

Re: translations?
I am definitely interested, although I must confess that I approach the subject with very little knowledge of any other languages apart from my own. My interest is more in the numbers, and what they mean on a social level. GeorgeStepanek\talk 06:25, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, the same statistical interest that grabs many of us :-) There's a need for that interest more pressing than the need for language skills. +sj +

- there really isn't anything quite like that at BU at the moment. we have a course info website where instructors can post assignments and syllabi and grades and the like, but students can't edit it. for students, there's the BU livejournal community, that's pretty much it :-) sounds like a good idea, perhaps i can find someone in the dean's office who would be amenable to this sort of thing.--Alhutch 17:14, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
Athlete-stub
There already is a generic stub: sportbio-stub. See Template talk:Sportbio-stub for the discussion of why athlete-stub was rejected as the generic stub. As to why athlete-stub redirects to athleticsbio-stub instead of being the root stub template, view Wikipedia:WikiProject_Stub_sorting/Proposals/Archive10#Subcats_of_Sportbio-stub to see why athleticsbio-stub was chosen as the stub template for people involoved in track and field. Hope this helps. Caerwine Caerwhine 20:14, 28 February 2006 (UTC)
- What Caerwine said. Another reason for the naming is that in a lot of the world (almost all Commonwealth countries, to start with) "athlete" only means a track and field athlete. If you go to the UK, you will never hear a soccer player or cricketer being called an athlete unless people are specifically referring to their running skills - say athlete in the UK, Australia, India, or any of a load of other countries and people will instantly think of runners, jumpers, and throwers. Grutness...wha? 22:41, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

Main page at WP:1.0
Hi Sj,
Just noticed your changes on the main page, I'm really glad to see you pitch in. I thought I should let you know that we are planning on completely revamping this page sometime in the next few days. It should reflect where we are now, rather than where we were in September when these subprojects were mere proposals. We also need to consider what new sub-projects might be created, as well as coordinating with FA, GA, AA, peer reviews etc. - I plan on adding a box of links to help that. One thing I should mention, the WVWikiProjects group is planning on doing more than general metrics - we are all keen to start requesting lists of sub-specific core topics, this should help spawn even more worklists (and perhaps trees, too?) and help us tie the core topics in with the WikiProjects. Can you let me know what you think should be on the main WP1.0 page, thoughts on layout, etc?
A couple of other things - User:Vir has just joined 1.0 and been working on your suggestion of a "microproject" on organising categories - see the core topics talk pages and core topics tree. Second, if you can spare the time I would really love to get some of your technical help to make the trees looking nice, so we could use them more!
While I'm here, did you get the packet from Fredonia for June? Cheers, Walkerma 05:28, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
Hawaiʻi
This discussion has been gone over before. Though the state is named "Hawaii" according to Washington, the state calls itself "Hawaiʻi", and is the sole name of the state in Hawaiian English, which along with Hawaiian are the sole official languages of the state. (The only time in Hawaiian English when the ʻokina is omitted is when the name is given unseparated English suffixes, such as "Hawaiian" itself.) As the United States has no national official language, and Hawaiian English is the form of English standard in Hawaiʻi, the Hawaiian English name "Hawaiʻi" takes precedence. It's used by the state government and in all its publications. Please revert your moves, such as 'Aiea, Hawaii back to 'Aiea, Hawai'i, or it'll take the nothaweng template until it does. - Gilgamesh 08:45, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

Version 1.0 "Release Version Qualifying"
Hi, I'm interested in your feedback on Wikipedia talk:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Release Version Qualifying. It's essentially an idea to use a process similar to WP:FAC to identify and handle articles and lists that would go in a release version. Maurreen 19:35, 8 April 2006 (UTC)
