Two men are depicted, one on the left and one on the right side of the tree. The man on the left side of the tree is standing on a cantilevered wooden pole wedged in a pocket cut into the side of the tree, known as a springboard. He is facing the camera but his head is turned towards the tree and he is holding an axe which is embedded in the tree. A second similar wedge can be seen below the man, a jacket and a hat are hanging on the end of the wedge. The second man, on the right side, is standing on a piece of wood which is propped against the tree by another piece of wood. He has his back to the camera and is swinging an axe over his right shoulder. A hat can be seen near his left foot. The background of the image depicts a bushland / forest environment.
