Summary

Dead Japanese Army soldiers lie near the mouth of the Matanikau after a failed attack on U.S. Marine positions on Guadalcanal on October 23-24, 1942. Scanned from:

However, other sources identify this photo as being from Saipan on 8 July 1944 after the failure of the large Japanese banzai charge.

Book states that photo is official USMC image.
