Summary

Description

English: Argon Pedion”, temporary lake in a closed karst basin, “Nestani-Sagka-Polje” (length:ca. 4 km, separate part of the ca. 30 km long Tripoli-Karst-Basin in the Arcadian highland, Peloponnese).

This part of the polje is mainly grassland for herding sheep and goats. Soil, weathered rock material and a richer vegetation of the mountains have been washed down into the basin, degraded shrubs on a thin surface layer are what is left.

The name Argon Pedion (Greek for untilled plain) is documented in the “Description of Greece”, a book by the ancient geographer Pausanias (110-180 AD). Pausanias already saw the flooded plain, similar to the photo, but the look of the mountains might have been greener than today.
