Sharmin Ali (born 8 August 1988) is an Indian actress, writer, and entrepreneur.[1]

Early life and education

[edit]

Sharmin Ali was born in West Bengal, India. She completed her schooling at Delhi Public School, R. K. Puram. In childhood Sharmin spoke with a stammer, which in later life she learned to manage.[2][3] She graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering from HKBK College of Engineering, Bangalore.[citation needed]

Career

[edit]

After completing her degree, Sharmin worked for a consulting firm[4] but quit to become a writer. She self-published a free e-book YOU (You Own Urself), on the subject of getting to know oneself. She later launched YOUR-FIRST-BOOK, which provided training and guidance for aspiring writers.[citation needed] Sharmin additionally started a theatre production house, ART-RIGHT-IS.[5]

Ali founded Bengaluru-based AI startup Instoried, which completed an $8 million funding round in 2021.[6][7] However, as of 2024, the company's website was offline and most of its employees had left the company.[8] Investors have accused Ali of making overambitious projections of their investment returns; in response, Ali has threatened to sue for defamation.[8]

  • EREBUS- Darkness Personified, also at the Rangoli Arts Centre, was based on Greek mythology portraying several shades of the God Erebus who personifies darkness.[13] The show was described as "An orgasm that lasts for 70 minutes: Self-Hedonism and Paranoia!”.[citation needed]
  • The Penis Monologues, written by American Jason Cassidy and adapted for Indian audiences,[14] explores male attitudes towards sex, women, violence, emotional insecurities and what it's like to have a penis. As the rehearsals began, three directors joined Ali in directing the monologues.[15]
  • Aurora, a collection of short plays, was staged at Alliance francaise de Bangalore.[citation needed]
  • Chutzpah premiered at Chowdiah Memorial Hall, Bangalore, in 2015.The characters in this 90-minute musical satire written by Ali are women who have broken free from their inhibitions and defied the stereotype.[16] A group of activists took offence to the play's title, having misunderstood it as a vulgar word in Hindi.[17]
