Suspected sockpuppets

Nmwalsh is a disclosed paid editor. User:DGG sent several articles to AFD/CSD in mid April and shortly afterwards, Solvilo appeared. Since then the two have been working together on drafts e.g. [1] [2] and Nmwalsh added a disclosure to Solvilo's UP. I asked Nmwalsh to explain this and he says that Solvilo is a colleague he has been training, but that doesn't seem particularly convincing and I would like a CU to take a look. SmartSE (talk) 17:03, 17 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I've looked into this more and seems ever more likely that Nmwalsh is a sock of User:Trident13 (100k+ edits) who was blocked for copyvio in July 2014 (ANI) and about who there were also paid editing concerns. I've already asked Nmwalsh about any connection and they deny knowing them, but this edit copied content directly from User:Trident13/DavisPAuthor. Looking more closely at how Nmwalsh has edited drafts it sounds similar to how User:Mike_V noted Trident13 writing by copying biographies and then paraphrasing them. Compare for example, Even at ten years old, he starts tending to prefer making his own way in the world. with Even at 10 yrs old, I tend to prefer making my own things to doing what other people tell me. Solvilo's first edit also looks as if it paraphrased or copied from somewhere, but I can't find anything online. SmartSE (talk) 18:02, 17 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
This and [3] this which were very early edits by Nmwalsh link them to User:Kaledit and Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/Mamadoutadioukone as well as a bunch of other paid editing SPIs. There were also copyvio problems at Watch Tower (Waterford): [4]. SmartSE (talk) 23:05, 17 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

A brief initial look at this confirms what Smartse says above: both Solvilo and Walsh create sandboxes that are copy-paste assemblages of copyright material, just as Trident13 did. User:Solvilo/sandbox/Jillian Haslam is copied from the Calcutta Telegraph, Draft:Victor W. Hwang is a copy-paste from the bio here. The absolute clincher, in my view, would be to find copyvios as hidden text in early sandbox versions of the pages. If the connection is established, these accounts will need to be added to the already huge Trident13 CCI. It might be worth including Pangloss527 in this, too. Lumsniit32 created Victor W. Hwang which is substantially similar exactly the same as Draft:Victor_W._Hwang created and edited by Nmwalsh. The AFC was declined twice and this habit of creating the article anyway has been observed before e.g. at Draft:Paul_Davis_(author) and then Paul Davis (author). A case of WP:DUCK in my opinion. —This lousy T-shirt— (talk) 19:32, 31 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah. I just merged the histories and realised that it's exactly the same: [5]. Still CU would be good just to confirm and justify indeffing the master. SmartSE (talk) 19:42, 31 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Gibmul was blocked by Yamla on 12th May for block evasion. I've just noticed Rebius appear and strongly suspect they are a sock. They link to rebius.org on their userpage as the source of their work. That site was registered on 16th May and yet the editor had already started editing the day before. Those familiar with this case will recognise that I am a journalist with more than 30 years experience and have been editing Wikipedia pages for more than 12 years. fits extremely closely with this master's previous publicly available information. SmartSE (talk) 12:07, 17 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Also note the account registration date was just after Gibmul was reported to COIN. SmartSE (talk) 12:20, 17 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Nothing other similarities, I'm 99 % convinced of this so am going to block. Given the history, a CU may still be a good idea. SmartSE (talk) 12:23, 17 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • I checked and didn't see anything. As an aside, I don't know whether they're related to the sockmaster because that account is stale, but it seems very  Likely that they're related to each other. --Deskana (talk) 10:47, 18 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Clerk assistance requested: I assume SmartSE intended to file this at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Nmwalsh. Please fix.--Bbb23 (talk) 14:29, 18 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Green Martini and Nmwalsh geolocate to different continents; I would call them Red X Unrelated. I suspect Gibmul and Rebius may have been on proxies, but I don't see any evidence that these two are. If there isn't strong behavioral evidence, I'd say to just close the investigation. The history of the deleted draft is really concerning and is most likely not a coincidence. I'm blocking for UPE. MER-C 08:56, 20 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
