A college sophomore is NOT simply a person in their second year of classes. A student, even passing all classes, can be either a college freshman, junior, or senior as well in their second year as well. This is because ranks are based upon the number of completed credit hours recognized by the college or university. At The Ohio State University, the RANK of a student (1, 2, 3, 4 = Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior) is increased after every 45 completed credit hours. I will update the page and link to Ohio State's pages explaining their policy.
