Talk:Jingle truck
Origin and meaning?
[edit]This article needs more info about when and where this phenomenon originated from, what cultural impact it has and what symbolism with the decorations are. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.202.208.245 (talk) 18:22, 5 May 2010 (UTC)

Osama bin Ladin in Window?
[edit]Anyone else believe that the photo of a "jingle truck" contains Osama bin Ladin in the truck's passenger space? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.234.56.166 (talk) 23:16, 30 September 2010 (UTC)

Merger proposal with Truck art in Pakistan
[edit]I have suggested that this page be merged with Truck art in Pakistan, as both pages seem to be dealing with the same topic. Any objections, or shall I go ahead under the authority of WP:BOLD and merge the pages? wia (talk) 22:12, 10 February 2015 (UTC)
MergeMerge Truck art in Pakistan into Jingle truckis my vote, to be clear. Both articles refer to the same topic. Furthermore, Jingle truck has no sources or citations, so merging the two articles would kill two birds with one stone by providing some citations from the old Truck art in Pakistan article.I have updated my vote based on FieldMarine's good points below. It seems that truck art in Pakistan is a subset of jingle trucks in general, so I agree that it would make more sense to put the content from the former into the latter. wia (talk) 22:31, 15 February 2015 (UTC)
- Keep, or Merge Truck art in Pakistan into this article, because the name Truck art in Pakistan implies this subject has limited scope to Pakistan. Jingle Truck is better name as it does not imply only Pakistan. Semper Fi! FieldMarine (talk) 04:37, 11 February 2015 (UTC)
- Keep Truck art in Pakistan and merge Jingle truck into the former, since the former is the main and more notable subject. I can't seem to find much sources saying these trucks are driven in countries other than Pakistan (or that truck art is popular in any other country), hence the former title needs to be kept. Mar4d (talk) 06:49, 11 February 2015 (UTC)
- Merge Topics are too similar to have separate articles. That said, I'm not sure which title it makes sense to keep. Probably truck art in Pakistan, so the scope of the article is broader than just a jingle truck and includes the economics, origins, artist lifestyle, etc. Bangabandhu (talk) 15:27, 11 February 2015 (UTC)
- Merge They share same heritage. Thanks --Camilo Sánchez Talk to me 15:41, 11 February 2015 (UTC)
- Keep I saw them in India. This is not a Pakistan-specific thing. dino (talk) 16:44, 11 February 2015 (UTC)
- Comment see here for multiple pictures in Commons of jingle trucks in other places then Pakistan, such as Afghanistan. Semper Fi! FieldMarine (talk) 06:18, 12 February 2015 (UTC)
- Do not merge: Though both topics are quite related, both have different scope. The article Jingle truck could be a generic article about jingle "trucks" found in Pakistan, Afghanistan and the Indian Punjab region. The article Truck art in Pakistan is not just about jingle trucks. It is about vehicle decoration in Pakistan in general (even though it is called just "truck" art). Like, there are similarly decorated buses, trucks, vans, three-wheeled auto-rickshaws, Hell, even Qing-qi's in Pakistan! You'll rarely find a public bus in the cities without the jingle decoration. These Pakistan-exclusive things are better converted in their own article since they're not all jingle "trucks". I will try to add more Pakistan-relevant content to the truck art article. —ШαмıQ✍ @ 14:24, 20 February 2015 (UTC)
- Sure, if you have some information or resources on the topic, that would be a solution as well. Thanks for offering! wia (talk) 14:32, 20 February 2015 (UTC)
- Merge Truck art in Pakistan is an article about jingle trucks in Pakistan. It really does not need its own article. Yserbius (talk) 21:18, 9 March 2015 (UTC)
Okay, there is clearly consensus to merge articles (votes are overwhelmingly in favour of merging). There are more votes to merge Truck art in Pakistan into Jingle truck, so what does everyone think of me creating a subsection in the Jingle truck article specifically about Pakistani jingle trucks? That way, all of the information in the Truck art in Pakistan article would find a home. wia (talk) 11:55, 27 March 2015 (UTC)
Merge to Truck art
[edit]Unfortunately, wia has retired since, so this initiative remained unresolved for several months. Seeing that the arguments opposing a merge did either not contain arguments against a merge to Jingle truck (dino) or did not back up their claims (Mar4d) or did not follow up on their promise (Wamiq), it appears there are no solid objections remaining agaist such a merge. However, there now is a link to Dekotora, and that seems like the same concept. too. Are there any objections to merging all to Truck art? Personally, I like the sound of the name "jingle truck", but it would probably not be appropriate for the Japanese trucks. (Also as it was termed by foreigners, there is a risk that it might be seen as offensive to some.) — Sebastian 21:14, 27 August 2015 (UTC)
- I have deep reservations about merging everything into truck art. Truck art in Pakistan is unique and distinct enough to merit its own topic. Of the options proposed, this one seems least palatable. I also do not think Truck art in Pakistan should go into jingle art, because it is, as you point out, potentially deragotory or at least dismissive. At least one other person agrees Bangabandhu (talk) 18:04, 28 August 2015 (UTC)
- I was about to reply that, as for any art form (e.g. oil painting, Sandpainting, Street painting, gourd art or mail art), we need a main article that is independent of the country it is practiced in. However, it seems we have such an article already: art car. Do people agree that article can be modified so that any truck art is included and properly linked to, whether from Pakistan or Japan? In that case truck art probably should redirect to that article.
- Bangabandhu, thank you for the link, which sadly confirms my concern. So what do you suggest as the title for the combination of the two articles Truck art in Pakistan and Jingle truck? How about Art trucks in South Asia or South Asian art trucks? You seem to be very comfortable in this area; would you be able to perform that merge, once we agree on the title? One thing that is vital for keeping that article distinct from Dekotora is that the differences are clearly elaborated. I didn't see anything about that in these articles. Would you be able to add those to the article, too? — Sebastian 22:27, 28 August 2015 (UTC)
- Of the ideas proposed, I like Art trucks in South Asia the best. It could incorporate content from both the jingle and truck art in Pakistan articles, as well as give a nod to truck art from India, which is also noteworthy. Yes, I'd contribute to the article. Bangabandhu (talk) 09:08, 30 August 2015 (UTC)
- Just thinking about this a bit more, wouldn't it make more sense to have it as Truck art in South Asia rather than Art trucks in South Asia, emphasizing the art over the vehicles. I think the article would not be solely about the trucks, but also about how the art has manifested itself in other forms, such as murals decorated by truck artists, or the many truck-art inspired fashion lines. Bangabandhu (talk) 09:12, 30 August 2015 (UTC)
- Yes, good point. It would be much better if the focus were on the art, instead of the trucks. I didn't know about the crossover to other art media and even fashion; that sounds really interesting. You wouldn't happen to have links to articles or pictures on that? — Sebastian 04:20, 2 September 2015 (UTC)
- There's lots of fashion-influenced truck art, such as here and here. There are lots of instances of cars and vespas decorated in truck art style Murals, too. If you want to endure the tedium of merging the two articles under the new heading Truck art in South Asia, I will contribute. Bangabandhu (talk) 00:39, 14 October 2015 (UTC)

- Wow, cool! I did the merge. I left out the sentence "Also, the more "jingle" found on the trucks typically meant the more wealthy the owners were. It was a sign of success." since it is not referenced, and isn't that informative, as it's almost a "duh" statement. But if you have source, I don't mind it being included. Of your links I only included the BBC report; please feel free to add the others where appropriate. I only collected the external links; please check which of them we really need. I also created a category:Decorated vehicles, which replaces most of the "See also" links. The biggest unexpected challenge was that there are are several image categories; please see the discussion at c:Category talk:Jingle trucks. — Sebastian 03:38, 14 October 2015 (UTC)
