History and organization

[edit]

Since the Sioux Quartzite was historically important, a couple of us are talking about adding a section on that. What I propose for the organization is:

  • Lede, with a map I'll make based on the one in the field guide I use a source as the starting image
  • Section on geology (written)
  • Sections on history, both native and importance in South Dakota (and anything else that we dig up), with the current image from Sioux Falls, and hopefully one of a carved pipe, and others if there's space

It might also be good to have a section on the geography and glacial geology, as the prominent Coteau des Prairies (which contains Buffalo Ridge) is a major landform where the rock crops out.

I'll see what I can do this weekend as far as the historical/economic side. Although I'm not a fan of sections that have been clogged with pictures, there is also a picture of the old Minnehaha County Courthouse at the Sioux Falls article. (I added the Federal building here as I thought it showed the color a bit better, but the other one is available if someone wants to use it.) The next time I'm in Sioux Falls, I'll try and get a picture of one of the modern quarries in either SF or the one near Dell Rapids. AlexiusHoratius 04:52, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks - if we can find enough info, it shouldn't be hard to add it. Awickert (talk) ~05:00, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Oops, it looks like I may have over-estimated the sources I had been planning to use in the section's expansion a bit - I'll try my best to find something that mentions the history/economic impact of the stone next time I'm in Sioux Falls. AlexiusHoratius 00:46, 6 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"Ma"

[edit]

The mouseOver hint for "Ma" says "annum" -- shouldn't that be "Mega-annum"?

Yes, that was rather unhelpful. Fixed for now by linking to specific section Year#SI prefix multipliers although now someone will likely change that header... Cheers, Vsmith (talk) 13:10, 5 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
