'Tide Carrier (originally named Ernesto Che Guevara) was a barge carrier vessel in operation between 1989 and 2018. From 2007 until 2017, it was inactive and anchored outside Høylandsbygd, Norway after being purchased by Eide Marine Services. In 2017, the ship was sold after the owner declared bankrupcy, but capsized off the coast of Rogaland, Norway en route to Dubai in February 2017. The Norwegian Enviromental Agency and Økokrim later sued the former owners on suspicion of selling the ship for illegal salvage in Pakistan, of which the former owners have denied all responsibility.
History
[edit]The ship was originally built at Kherson Shipyard in Kherson, USSR (now Kherson, Ukraine) in 1986-89. Christened Эрнесто Че Гевара (Ernesto Che Guevara), it entered service in October 1989. In 1996, it was sold to Panama and renamed Gaysin, and again renamed Hickory in April 1998. It sailed under this name and the flag of Panama until July 2007, when the ship was purchased by Eide Marine Services, renamed Eide Carrier and moved to Høylandsbygd, Norway. Due to the global financial crisis that hit soon after, it remained inactive and anchored until 2017, when it was sold to Julia Shipping and renamed Tide Carrier, following the bankrupcy of the previous owner.
Capsizing and lawsuit
[edit]On 20 February 2017, the ship departed Høylandsbygd with an alleged destination of Dubai, where it was to be dry-docked and retrofitted for work along the coast of Africa. Two days later, however, it capsized 400 metres off the Rogaland coast after suffering engine troubles. Due to rough weather, authorities were afraid of the ship grounding and evacuated the crew using helicopters. In the following days, the ship was closely monitored by the autorities, due to suspicions that the ship was in reality destined for Gadani, Pakistan to be illegally salvaged. On 19 February, the day before departing, the Indian crew sent by Julia Shipping had hastily changed the name and port of the ship using blue and white paint, allegedly to hide the identidy of the vessel when arriving in Pakistan. A few days later, the remaining crew had their passports confiscated and were ordered to remain on the vessel, pending investigations. In August 2017, Norwegian authorities formally charged the previous owners, Eide Marine Services.[1].
