Giovanni 'John' Rosario is an American politician who is currently Massachusetts' state attorney general, succeeding Alexander Warren, who has recently been elected the state's governor. Rosario is the first Massachusetts Attorney General of Italian-Argentine descent, as well as the first openly agnostic attorney general.

Early Life

[edit]

Born to Italian-Argentine parents whom are both U.S. citizens, Rosario arrived in the United States after his mother, Amelia Perez de Farias, was hired by Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a professor of chemistry at the age of 8. He attended Peabody School, then transferred into Philips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire and attended Amherst College. Rosario graduated from Amherst summa cum laude, earning a degree in political science-statistics. Rosario earned his J.D. from Harvard Law School, where he graduated valedictorian and magna cum laude. After law school, Rosario co-founded Boston-based civil litigation firm Ashton, Rosario, Earling LLP, where he practiced until his election to Massachusetts Senate. Rosario also teaches civil litigations at Harvard Law School part-time.

Political Career

[edit]

A self-described progressive, Rosario ran for a seat in the Massachusetts Senate for the 3rd Essex district, defeating Republican incumbent Geraldine Valentino-Cruz, who was appointed by Republican governor Cindy Sampson to fill Ellie Kennedy's remaining term after her election to the United States Senate. Rosario declared her candidacy for Massachusetts Attorney General on October 2, 2037, after incumbent attorney general Alexander Warren decided against seeking re-election and declared for governor instead. In the general election on November 2, 2039, Rosario defeated his Federalist opponent, Tobias Thompson, a state representative, and Republican opponent Johnston Hughes, a civil attorney, winning 49-25-23, carrying all of Massachusetts' 14 counties.
