Welcome

[edit]

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

Here are some other hints and tips:

  • I recommend that you get a username. You don't have to log in to read or edit articles on Wikipedia, but creating an account is quick, free and non-intrusive, requires no personal information, and there are many benefits of having a username. (If you edit without a username, your IP address is used to identify you instead.)
  • When using talk pages, please sign your name at the end of your messages by typing four tildes (~~~~). This will automatically produce your username (or IP address) and the date.

If you have any questions, check out Wikipedia:Where to ask a question, ask me on my talk page, or type {{helpme}} on this talk page and a user will help you as soon as possible. I will try to answer your questions as best as I can. Again, welcome, and I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian. KeeperOfTheInformation (talk) 16:39, 16 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, accidental revert

[edit]

I accidentally reverted your edit on Lawrence Lee. Sorry about that. I've reverted my reversion. —Tom Morris (talk) 16:22, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Dashes for date ranges

[edit]

When making a date range such as 1966—2011, please use a dash, not a hyphen, to join the dates. If you use a Mac, the code is Option-hyphen; on a PC, it is Alt-0150 (on a laptop, you may also need to press Fn). In Wikipedia, you can also make an en dash by clicking the first dash after "Insert" below the Save button when editing a page. Finally, you can type & ndash; (without the space after the "&") between the numbers. -Rrius (talk) 16:44, 2 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Cuddly Dudley

[edit]

Thanks for spotting my typo (5 instead of 15) when I changed the infobox format - and having made the mistake I repeated it as well. Arjayay (talk) 15:21, 25 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

September 2011

[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, your addition of one or more external links to the page Deaths in March 2008 has been reverted.
Your edit here to Deaths in March 2008 was reverted by an automated bot that attempts to remove links which are discouraged per our external links guideline. The external link(s) you added or changed (http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/k/flora-kidd/) is/are on my list of links to remove and probably shouldn't be included in Wikipedia.
If you were trying to insert an external link that does comply with our policies and guidelines, then please accept my creator's apologies and feel free to undo the bot's revert. However, if the link does not comply with our policies and guidelines, but your edit included other, constructive, changes to the article, feel free to make those changes again without re-adding the link. Please read Wikipedia's external links guideline for more information, and consult my list of frequently-reverted sites. For more information about me, see my FAQ page. November 2011

[edit]

Hello, and welcome! I'm a bot created by another Wikipedia editor. I wanted to let you know that I removed one or more of the external links you added to the page Deaths in October 2011, because they did not seem to meet our definition of appropriate links.

If you feel the link should be added to the article, please discuss it on the article's talk page before adding it again. If you have any questions, you can also ask at the Help desk.
I did this because http://ginsbergblog.blogspot.com/2011/10/andrea-zanzotto-1921-2011.html is probably inappropriate for an encyclopedia. We usually avoid linking to blogs, forums, and social media sites.

Even though Wikipedia is strict about having appropriate links, we really appreciate your help. If I made a mistake, feel free to undo my edit. If you have any questions, you can ask at the Help desk. --XLinkBot (talk) 09:02, 18 November 2011 (UTC) If this is a shared IP address, and you didn't make the edit, please ignore this notice.[reply]

Comment tags

[edit]

You misunderstood what was going on with the code when you made this edit. Your edit summary makes it clear that you believed the code was commenting out Burns, Davis, de Silva, Douglas, and Soames. You were wrong. It was in fact commenting out Davis, Douglas, and Sumption. The code "<!- -" (space inserted to make it visible) starts a string of text won't be displayed ("commented out"). Its companion "-- >" (space again inserted) ends the comment. Thus, the code after Burns, de Silva, and Soames had no effect on them, but merely signaled that what came after would not be displayed. Thanks for contributing. -Rrius (talk) 17:44, 30 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

February 2012

[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute to the encyclopedia, one or more of the external links you added to the page Deaths in December 2008 do not comply with our guidelines for external links and have been removed. Wikipedia is not a collection of links; nor should it be used as a platform for advertising or promotion, and doing so is contrary to the goals of this project. Because Wikipedia uses nofollow tags, external links do not alter search engine rankings. If you feel the link should be added to the article, please discuss it on the article's talk page before reinserting it. Please take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing constructively to this encyclopedia.

The external link(s) you added or changed (http://downtownnewhaven.blogspot.com/2009/01/tribute-to-elizabeth-mills-brown-athena.html) is/are on my list of links to remove and probably shouldn't be included in Wikipedia. If the external link you inserted or changed was to a blog, forum, free web hosting service, fansite, or similar site (see 'Links to avoid', #11), then please check the information on the external site thoroughly. Note that such sites should probably not be linked to if they contain information that is in violation of the creator's copyright (see Linking to copyrighted works), or they are not written by a recognised, reliable source. Linking to sites that you are involved with is also strongly discouraged (see conflict of interest).
If you were trying to insert an external link that does comply with our policies and guidelines, then please accept my creator's apologies and feel free to undo the bot's revert. March 2012

[edit]

Please do not add inappropriate external links to Wikipedia, as you did to Deaths in September 2010. Wikipedia is not a collection of links, nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. Inappropriate links include (but are not limited to) links to personal web sites, links to web sites with which you are affiliated, and links that attract visitors to a web site or promote a product. See the external links guideline and spam guideline for further explanations. Because Wikipedia uses the nofollow attribute value, its external links are disregarded by most search engines. If you feel the link should be added to the article, please discuss it on the article's talk page rather than re-adding it.

When you add or change content, as you did to the article George_Dowty#Family, please cite a reliable source for your addition. This helps maintain our policy of verifiability. April 2012

[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, adding or significantly changing content without citing a reliable source, as you did with this edit to Jack McManus (singer), is not consistent with our policy of verifiability. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. If you are familiar with Wikipedia:Citing sources, please take this opportunity to add references to the article.   — Jeff G. ツ (talk) 16:30, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
