FEN
Hi Matthew, I understand you wrote the FEN code? I hope you don't mind but I'm trying it on the chess diagram at wikibooks. See template here. There are two concerns I have. One is that the blank board position I think should be 8/8/8/8/8/8/8/8 and not 87654321/87654321/87654321/87654321/87654321/87654321/87654321/87654321, although perhaps I misunderstand FEN. The next issue is the FEN string when shown can be so long that it exceeds the board width. The string width thing is perhaps okay, because it's optional to see it. Hey Matthew
I just wanted to let you know that I am not dead. I have been using Wikipedia a lot in the time I've been "gone", and also made a few edits. However, these edits have been anonymous, as I find it tedious to log on everytime I see a single typo to correct. That's why I often just correct the typo anonymously. I am seriously considering creating a page for my IP which links to my userpage, but I mostly use Wikipedia at school, where I have a very dynamic IP. Cheers man, hope you're doing good, Bobber0001 (talk) 18:27, 3 April 2008 (UTC)
Yea I've been fine, thanks. We just got a new teacher at school who seem have have some sort of personal crusade against Wikiepdia and it's credibility. I pointed out that Wikipedia has fixed numerous errors that still are in Encyclopædia Brittanica, but he refused to believe it, since I also found the aforementioned piece of information on Wikipedia... Anyways, I was just about to add something to Liquorice root, so I'm off! Bobber0001 (talk) 13:19, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
There, done. Go check it out and correct my vast amount of errors and mistakes. Also, could you help me archive my talk page? It's getting rather huge. Thanks! Bobber0001 (talk) 13:46, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

Gerald Guterman help?
Dear Matthew, could you kindly assist with Gerald Guterman? The user NetHistoryBuff5, a newbie, seems personally invested in seeing a saccharine bio, not a WP article. He or she has ignored all requests to clarify his/her relationship to Guterman, but has no other WP interests. Strongly smells of COI.
Also, I edited the piece to include ALL of NHB5's additions, but NHB5 just kills this long version every day, opting for the shorter and sweeter version. Other editors have added citations from the NYTimes and a noted economist, but NHB5 calls them "slanderous." S/he refuses to make individual edits, prefering instead to just revert back to the short and safe piece s/he likes best. 3RR has become 10RR. I don't know what to do. Please help. People ganging up to disrupt an article
Hi,
I found you at Wikipedia:Editor assistance. If you can spare a few minutes of your time helping out at Indo-Aryan loanwords in Tamil, I would be thankful.
I am developing an article on words borrowed by Tamil from Indo-Aryan languages. I am citing a standard authoritative lexicon from which I find the words that are borrowed before including them at Indo-Aryan loanwords in Tamil. There are a few people who seem to be intent in damaging the article by adding "cite" tags, "disputed" and "dubious" tags for the article and threatening to delete it within 24 hours.
Could you please help?
Thanks. Kris (talk) 19:07, 27 September 2008 (UTC)

No, association football (soccer) is the agreed term for soccer in this country. Just like it is in the other templates. I am reverting it right back to its agreed term. You left me a message about a link that I took out of the TV Newser article and you put the link back, but that link now goes to a domain spam page and removing it (I actually commented it out with html) was the right thing to do. Could you undo the reversion please? Thanks. 67.117.147.133 (talk) 09:08, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
Just wondering, but its a bit pointless edit warring over a template, specifically Template:Brisbane Sports Teams, that is not actually used by any Wikipedia page. --Falcadore (talk) 20:55, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, you see edit warring wasn't the important part of the message I left you. The important point is that the template involved was not in use. --Falcadore (talk) 23:04, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

Hi Matthew! I've dusted off my Wikipedianism and jumped full-on into an area I barely understand! I'm developing a new wikiproject, and that means subtleties of templates. The project's template is sufficiently complex in its simplest form that I have nary a clue why it doesn't categorize pages that it's put upon. Is this something you can help guide me on?--otherlleft (talk) 19:42, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

advice on writing style
Hi there. I noticed you were willing to volunteer to help out other Wikipedians. I need another pair of eyes, or some copy-editing if you can spare some time.
I have been working on an article called Grand Theft Auto clone. I recently completed a peer review, where a few wording and organizational changes were suggested. I followed through on all of them. I nominated the article for good article status, and it failed. The reviewer stated that the article frequently goes off topic and has serious grammatical issues. This is pretty out of step with what the peer review indicated.
I don't doubt that the article needs some polish to get to GA status (I was expecting an "On Hold" review)... but I'm left scratching my head about how to improve it. It's hard to reconcile the "instant fail" grammatical and organizational problems with the generally positive peer reviews. I think the most helpful thing right now is a set of eyes who isn't particularly experienced with the topic. If you don't have time to help with copy-editing, even a quick read with 3 tangible suggestions would be extremely helpful. See Talk:Grand Theft Auto clone, whenever you can find a moment. Randomran (talk) 21:35, 8 November 2008 (UTC)

Matthew, the Halloween userbox is kinda driving me nuts. I can't make it not categorize WP:BOO. I thought the use of <noinclude> would have done that but I guess I thought wrong. Would you look at the project page and let me know what you think?--otherlleft (talk) 13:06, 11 November 2008 (UTC)

RE: ACC
That account seems to have been created by the user himself (see here). Whereas, if somebody else had created it, it would look a bit different (see this example and note it says that I created the account). Hope this helps. - Rjd0060 (talk) 01:29, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
- As I noted on Rjd0060's talk page: I had intended to create the account, but was unable to as the server told me it was already in use. I meant to choose 'taken' in ACC, but apparently did not and I had some minor ISP issues until recently so I was unaware of the error. I am about to sleep, thus if ACC should be updated to reflect that I had not actually created the account I politely ask that you do so for me. Just thought I'd weigh in on the vandalism tag you put on User talk:86.43.216.73. It doesn't look like the user was deliberately vandalizing the page -- rather, I think this user might be unfamiliar with policy. I know it's tempting to put vandal tags on edits like this, but sometimes a more personalized message can help prevent further damage to the article. No big deal. Hi Matt,
I have a quick question regarding my http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redemptorists_of_Australia_and_New_Zealand article. I noticed that "A major contributor to this article or its creator appears to have a conflict of interest with its subject." After reading the terms and conditions I honestly do not know why an editor would have an issue with this article. Could you inform me as to how what needs to be changed or what is the issue wiki has with this article? I will be writting an artice regarding the Redemptorists of Australia alone soon and I would like to know how to do so without breaking the wiki rules.

Bornmann: Here we go again....
I suspect this is going to be another edit/AUTO war like long ago....the case is coming to trial very soon (the one he's a key witness in) and I expect we'll see a bit of agitation on this and related articles. Isn't imputing libel i.e. threatening legal action libel, a wiki no-no. Nothing's in that article that's not in the sources (and actually more has come out since that could be added, but there are bigger fish to fry like Brian Kieran, Patrick Kinsella, Ken Dobell.....I know you're probably not familiar with BC politics (maybe you're from BC?) but it's a thorny bush with a lot of fruitcake hanging off it...thanks for catching that. Page blanking in lieu of constructive edits is, well, typical.......an original version of the article was completely wiped by sock puppet SPAs, speaking to each other as if they were separate people (which they weren't), and patting themselves on each "other's" back all the while to maintain the facade.....Skookum1 (talk) 00:10, 25 October 2009 (UTC)

Thank you
Hey, Matthew, I see your last edit was November of 2009, so I don't know if you'll ever read this. I guess I'm just talking to myself, but I wanted to say thank you for a the help you provided me a few years back, especially when things got out of hand with TTN. To be honest with you, I wish I would have had a little more support, especially when I raised suspicions of sock-puppetry. I can really say I’ve never been so discontent with anyone in my entire life, and it's sad that the edit wars and name calling that that came from that editor’s meat-puppets really made me depressed and caused me to leave Wikipedia for two years. I’ve really grown to to abhor all deltionists, but I am so happy that that editor’s last edit was October of 2009. I actually sang “♪Ding-Dong! The Witch Is Dead♪” when I saw that on the contributions page. (sigh)
I actually got back into editing, but in completely different projects. If you recall, I used to edit a lot in WikiProject Videogames and related projects. One day, for the heck of it, I checked out Jimbo’s contributions, and I saw he edited BLPs. I thought that that must be so boring! Now, I rarely edit works of fiction, and now I'm editing … BLPs! I actually created my first article, Miss Foozie, and the subject was overjoyed with the result. The peer review also went very well.
A lot changed in my life when I quit Wikipedia back in 2008. I moved from Florida back to my condo in Illinois. My then-boyfriend, moved up to Illinois in June after I secured a job. Since he hadn’t come up in time for ACen (Anime Central) in May, I didn’t go for fear of financial burden. I made it a condition of our relationship that if he didn’t truly like anime, then I would break up with him. I told myself that I wanted to take him to a larger convention rather than Anime Reactor that fall, but I later realized that was just a false security, since I knew in my heart we would never reach consensus on the things we loved in life, whether they were safe sex practices, food choices, or whatever; we broke up in January of 2009. I’d been in and out of relationships since then, and I didn’t actually watch any anime or attend any conventions until in the summer of 2009 I forced myself to dig out my old VHS tapes and watch Slayers. I cried because of the pain of bringing out the part of myself I had repressed for so long, because of an editor who was a dick on Wikipedia and a boyfriend who was totally wrong for me making me change myself into someone I didn’t want to be. Even my own brother told me he felt like he didn’t even know who I was anymore. That day I watched those VHS tapes, I remembered the reason I loved anime so much, and I wanted to be that person again. I met another great guy in 2009, and although we broke up this year, he really loved me for who I was, which is what is most important. I started seeing some of my old friends again, and I wanted to see what Wikipedia had to say about one of Chicago’s most notable people men dresses as a woman: Miss Foozie. Do you know what it said?: Nothing. There was no article, so I gathered my sources and began writing. You know, I can honestly say that was one positive thing I learned before 2008 in Wikipedia. All it takes to write a good article is to gather a truckload of good sources and begin writing. It took me two days of editing, but I posted the article in a single edit and put it up for peer review. The review went well, and the reviewer gave me all the suggestions I needed to get it from a C to B assessment. After that, I'll apply for GA status.
Anyway, I wanted to say thanks again for being my adopter, and I wish the best of luck to you and yours. Cheers. Taric25 (talk) 09:44, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

My change to the Charles Fried page was to comport with the following: "When quoting a vulgarity or obscenity, it should appear exactly as it does in the cited source; words should never be bowdlerized by replacing letters with dashes, asterisks, or other symbols." See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style. As such, I've put it back into place.
Thanks.

- I agree with your changes as per the Manual of Style. Yet when making changes, try to please cite the material so that others can easily verify the validity of your change. Sorry again for the mix up, hopefully we can avoid that in the future. Matthew Yeager (talk) 05:54, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
K, tried again with an edit summary, it wasn't vandalism. user:Godo Dodo didn't get the ones I was using in the previous edits, mis-reverted me as vandalism, then suggested I stop the weird edit summaries. Next edit, I forget to use an edit summary at all. And with those few bytes I stuck my foot in something deep and brown and smelly. Hope that's all solved now. Editor assistance list
Hello. Since your account has recently not been editing very regularly, on the page Wikipedia:Editor assistance/list you name has been moved to a list of editors who are willing to give assistance, but may not always be available. There is an explanation at Wikipedia talk:Editor assistance/list#Problem with inactive accounts on the list. You are, of course, welcome to move yourself back to the other list if you wish to. Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference
Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.
On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion, guidelines for use at WP:MINOR). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true
. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false
in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and all users will still be able to manually mark their edits as being minor in the usual way.
For well-established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.
Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 20:41, 15 March 2011 (UTC)

Invitation to events in June and July: bot, script, template, and Gadget makers wanted
I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon, 1-3 June. Registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, then please register by May 1st and mention it in the registration form.
This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, teaching, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.
We want to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!
I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.
Check out the the developers' days preceding Wikimania in July in Washington, DC and our other events.
Best wishes! - Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation's Volunteer Development Coordinator. Please reply on my talk page, here or at mediawiki.org. Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation Volunteer Development Coordinator 20:22, 2 April 2012 (UTC)
Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. New deal for page patrollers
Hi Matthew Yeager,
In order to better control the quality of new pages, keep out the spam, and welcome the genuine newbies, the current system we introduced in 2011 is being updated and improved. The documentation and tutorials have also been revised and given a facelift. Most importantly a new user group New Page Reviewer has been created.
Under the new rule, you may find that you are temporarily unable to mark new pages as reviewed. However, this is nothing to worry about - most current experienced patrollers are being accorded the the new right without the need to apply, and if you have significant previous experience of patrolling new pages, we strongly encourage you to apply for the new right as soon as possible - we need all the help we can get, and we are now providing a dynamic, supportive environment for your work.
Find out more about this exiting new user right now at New Page Reviewers and be sure to read the new tutorial before applying. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 04:29, 13 November 2016 (UTC)
