Managing a conflict of interest

[edit]

Information icon Hello, BP CIB Director. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. Madeline (part of me) 12:01, 11 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Maddy
I am communications director of the company I wish to update on wikipedia. I have been given the task of updating the company information. I would be grateful for some guidance, because the instructions above are very confusing.
kind regards

Welcome to Wikipedia. Because we have a policy against usernames which give the impression that the account represents a group, club, organization, company, or website, I have blocked this account from editing. You are welcome to continue editing after you have chosen a new username that complies with Wikipedia's username policy.

It also appears that your account is intended to be used for the purpose of telling the world about an organization, person or cause that you consider worthwhile. Unfortunately, many good causes are not sufficiently notable for their own Wikipedia article, and all users are discouraged from editing in any area where they have an inherent conflict of interest. You may wish to consider one of these alternative outlets. Additionally, if your contributions to Wikipedia form all or part of work for which you are, or expect to be, paid or compensated in any way, you must disclose who is paying you to edit here.

Please take a moment to either create a new account, or request a username change of your current account here. The new username that you choose must represent you as an individual person, and it must comply with Wikipedia's username policy.
  • To create a new account with a different username, simply log out of this account and then click here to make a new one.
  • If you prefer to change the username on this account, you may do so by adding the following text to the bottom of your talk page here: {{unblock-un|new username|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}.

Please note that the new username you choose cannot already be taken or in use by another account. You can go here to search and see if the username you'd like to choose is available. If the search returns that no global account with that username exists, that means it is available to be taken.

Please also note that you are permitted to use a username that contains the name of a company or organization if it also identifies you individually, such as "Sara Smith at XYZ Company", "Mark at WidgetsUSA", or "FoobarFan87", but not "SEO Manager at XYZ Company".

Appeals: If your username does not represent a group, organization, website, or other entity described above, and if you believe that this block was incorrect or made in error, you may appeal this block by adding the following text to the bottom of your talk page here: {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}

Dear Orange Mike
Can you please tell me what I should do to update the wiki page of the company I work for? I am communications director of CIBUK and I spent all morning updating the page only to have it blocked.
Kind regards

1. Companies, and jobs within companies, can't have Wikipedia accounts. That privilege is reserved for individual human beings. "Ben at CIB" could have an account. "CIB" or "CIB PR Guy" cannot.
2. We don't care what a company has to say about itself. A "communications director" by definition is a flack, an PR person, a spin doctor, whose task is to make their client look good. We only care about facts (good or bad) attested to by reliable sources without any conflict of interest. Potentially useful information from reliable sources can be pointed out on the talk page of the subject article, inviting editors without a COI to examine the information and considering whether it should be added to the article.
3. We don't do behind-the-scenes communications, so your e-mail was no good, just spambait. Anything you want to say should be publicly posted, so that the Wikipedia editing community may consider it on its merits, openly and cleanly. --Orange Mike | Talk 16:30, 11 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Article nominated for deletion

[edit]

Hi, I've just nominated the article for the Campaign for an Independent Britain to be deleted as I do not believe it complies with Wikipedia's policies. In particular, it breaches the requirement that the subject be notable. This requirement is somewhat technical at times but you can find further information at the page where my nomination will be discussed. Please let me know if there is anything I can help with. I hope you will follow the instructions Orange Mike left you above so that you will be unblocked and can contribute to the deletion debate. Jtrrs0 (talk) 19:28, 11 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
