Welcome!

[edit]

Hello, CTPF, and welcome to Wikipedia! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Unfortunately, one or more of the pages you created, such as User:CTPF/sandbox, may not conform to some of Wikipedia's content policies and may not be retained. In short, the topic of an article must be notable and have already been the subject of publication by reliable and independent sources.

Please review Your first article for an overview of the article creation process. The Article Wizard is available to help you create an article, where it will be reviewed and considered for publication. For information on how to request a new article that can be created by someone else, see Requested articles. If you are stuck, come to the Teahouse, where experienced Wikipedians can help you through the processes.

New to Wikipedia? Please consider taking a look at our introductory tutorial or reviewing the contributing to Wikipedia page to learn the basics about editing. Below are a few other good pages about article creation.

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you have any questions, ask me on my talk page. You can also type {{help me}} on this page, followed by your question, and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Again, welcome! UtherSRG (talk) 16:54, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Your user page, User:CTPF/sandbox, has been speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This was done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appeared to be advertising which only promoted or publicized someone or something. Promotional editing of any kind is not permitted, whether it be promotion of a person, company, product, group, service, belief, or anything else. This is a violation of our policies regarding acceptable use of user pages — user pages are intended for active editors of Wikipedia to communicate with one another as part of the process of creating encyclopedic content, and should not be mistaken for free webhosting resources or advertising space. Please read the guidelines on spam, the guidelines on user pages, and, especially, our FAQ for Organizations.

Please do not recreate the material without addressing these concerns, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If you think this page should not have been deleted for this reason, or you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Hello, CTPF. Thank you for helping to build Wikipedia-- the world's largest free content encyclopedia. The page User:CTPF/sandbox has been speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This was done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seemed to be unambiguous advertising which only promoted a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to have been fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

This article needs to be rewritten from scratch from reliable, third party sources unconnected to the subject. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. It is not an outlet for promotion, advocacy, or advertising.

Information on content and common pitfalls to avoid can be located here and here, however be aware that this is not an exhaustive list. Pages can sometimes avoid these pitfalls and still be seen as an ad copy or unambiguously promotional, particularly if the editor appears to be a paid editor or has some other conflict of interest. Please review these policies, including the FAQ page on organizations to determine if this applies to you.

Common mistakes or beliefs about promotional editing center on the assumption that promotional editing only applies to promotion for commercial gain. Some tags or G11 nominations are met with confusion by creators, particularly if they spend much time reading or creating corporate documents, mission/vision statements, or similar copy for their organization. The frequent exposure to promotional tone may make it difficult to notice non-neutral phrases or styles, as the editor has grown accustomed to seeing it as everyday writing or speech. This can be difficult, but not impossible, to unlearn.

Another common assumption is that the prohibition against promotional editing applies only to businesses or organizations. Anything can be promoted, including a person, a non-commercial organization, a point of view, etc. and CV/resumé's are by their nature promotional.

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia-- subjects must meet notability guidelines with reliable sources that are unconnected with the subject and providing verifiable information. That generally means someone unconnected with the subject needs to have written a great deal about the subject. Please see this page on citing sources and Wikipedia:Common sourcing mistakes (notability). This page has templates you can use in citing your sources. Place the template {{Reflist}} at the bottom of the page, and references cited in the text will appear there. New article creation can be difficult, but the Article Wizard can help you. The new user tutorial can help you avoid future problems. You can also ask for help at the TEAHOUSE and on IRC chat, as well as Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation/Help desk. Wikipedia:The Wikipedia Adventure is a useful tutorial.

New article creation can be difficult and frustrating. Sometimes it is better to first gain experience by fixing and helping maintain existing articles. Wikipedia:Community portal/Opentask contains links to things that badly need doing, if you are so inclined. UtherSRG (talk) 16:54, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Your account has been indefinitely blocked from editing because of the following problems: the account has been used for advertising or promotion, which is contrary to the purpose of Wikipedia, and your username indicates that the account represents a business, organisation, group, or web site, which is against the username policy.

You may request a change of username and unblock if you intend to make useful contributions instead of promoting your business or organization. To do this, first search Special:CentralAuth for available usernames that comply with the username policy. Once you have found an acceptable username, post the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with your new username and replace the text "Your reason here" with your reasons to be unblocked. In your reasons, you must:

  • Disclose any compensation you may receive for your contributions in accordance with the paid-contribution disclosure requirement.
  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the kind of edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
Appeals: If, after reviewing the guide to appealing blocks, you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal it by adding the text {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your reason here" with the reasons you believe the block was an error, and publish the page. UtherSRG (talk) 16:54, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Requested username:

Request reason:

I did not understand the guideline initially when choosing my username as I do now. I checked on the auth page if this name is available and nothing came up so I presume it is. I am new to creating pages on Wikipedia and overwhelmed easily by all the information. I am just trying to create an informational page for a non profit organization and would like the chance to edit the page so that it is up to standard for Wikipedia. Thanks.

Decline reason:

This does not address your violations of WP:COI and WP:PROMO. Yamla (talk) 17:45, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi there, I pulled the information directly from our website (www.citytaverndc.org) as I thought it would be best but upon reading information provided I see that there is a promotional element to the wording so I would like to edit the entire page to remove all elements of promotion and advertising. CTPF (talk) 17:52, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Request unblock, change of username and violation addressed.

Requested username:

Request reason:

At first, I didn't fully comprehend the guideline for selecting my username, but now I do. I verified that the name I wanted was available on the authentication page and since nothing came up, I assume it's free for use.

Decline reason:

You still need to address your inappropriate edits and conflict of interest. Wikipedia is not for merely providing information; that is considered promotional here. I also think you need to decide if you want to write about the organization or the tavern itself. 331dot (talk) 21:06, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The City Tavern Preservation Foundation

The City Tavern Preservation Foundation is an independent 501(c )(3) organization formed to operate exclusively for charitable and educational purposes to preserve and memorialize the History and architecture with particular reference to the City Tavern in Georgetown. The City Tavern is the last remaining Federal-era tavern in the District of Columbia still in operation. Mission

The City Tavern Preservation Foundation is committed to preserving the City Tavern, the only surviving Federal tavern in Washington, DC. The Foundation operates independently of the City Tavern Club and focuses on raising funds to support the repair and ongoing restoration of the landmark. Additionally, the Foundation organizes various educational initiatives such as lectures, guided tours, and cultural events to showcase the City Tavern's History, famous patrons and guests, historical connection with slavery, 18th-century architecture, and interiors. The Foundation collaborates with local historic preservation and civic organizations to promote Georgetown's unique architectural, historical, and social heritage.

Preservation Work

The City Tavern, situated at the intersection of Wisconsin Avenue and M Street in Georgetown, boasts a rich and illustrious history dating back to its construction in 1796. The building has served various purposes throughout the years, including transportation, retail, business, and social club. Notably, from 1959 to 1962, the architectural firm Macomber and Peter, led by Walter Peter, undertook extensive restoration efforts to restore the building to its original appearance and replicate surviving decorative elements. Today, the City Tavern stands as a cherished and valuable piece of Georgetown's heritage, and the City Tavern Preservation Foundation is taking commendable steps to ensure its physical integrity and ongoing preservation. The Foundation's objectives include preserving the architectural treasure, enhancing the visitor experience, and increasing historical knowledge.|reason=Content violation removal.|category=All promotional and advertising materials have been removed from the article's content, ensuring adherence to Wikipedia guidelines.}}ll

Wikipedia is not a directory, so an organization is not entitled to have a Wikipedia article just because it exists. All topics must be notable by Wikipedia's definition to merit inclusion. In the specific case of an organization, it must meet the notability criteria for companies and organizations. For this to happen, the organization must have already received significant coverage in multiple reliable and independent sources. We have no interest in what an organization wishes to say about itself, as this is an inherent conflict of interest. --Drm310 🍁 (talk) 18:59, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I am happy to provide more if needed.
I would like the opportunity to edit the page and add all this information in and more as I do have more information. I am happy to leave the page unpublished until absolutely everything needed is in there. CTPF (talk) 19:19, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
What exactly are you trying to write about? The City Tavern itself, or the organization formed to preserve it? The two are separate and distinct topics from each other. And even if the tavern is notable, the organization isn't necessarily notable. Notability is not inherited - each topic must be independently notable to merit its own Wikipedia article. --Drm310 🍁 (talk) 19:55, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I am trying to write about the preservation foundation but it is tied to the club but a separate entity. In order to write about the foundation, there needs to be a historic link to the building history as the foundation is preserving the building so there will be a degree over overlap. CTPF (talk) 20:13, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The City Tavern Preservation Foundation is an independent organization committed to preserving and commemorating the City Tavern, a significant historical and architectural landmark located in Georgetown, Washington, D.C. The Foundation's primary mission is to ensure the lasting preservation of the City Tavern. Please do not open multiple unblock requests at one time, only one is needed at a time. 331dot (talk) 21:00, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Most of these sources just show that the organization exists, or just routine coverage of events. Existence does not equal notability. We require a depth of coverage beyond incidental mention of an organization to merit inclusion.
I believe that the building itself might be notable, but the organization isn't. The organization might be worthy of a brief paragraph inside an article about the building.
At any rate, all of your unblock requests have been declined. You'll have to make another one (below all these postings) and convince our admins that you understand the conflict of interest rules and our strict policy against using Wikipedia for promotion and publicity. --Drm310 🍁 (talk) 00:27, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
