Hello Ethicscentre. Welcome to Wikipedia and thank you for your contributions!

I'm Rasnaboy, one of the other editors here, and I hope you decide to stay and help contribute to this amazing repository of knowledge.

Some pages of helpful information to get you started:
  Introduction to Wikipedia
  The five pillars of Wikipedia
  Editing tutorial
  How to edit a page
  Simplified Manual of Style
  The basics of Wikicode
  How to develop an article
  How to create an article
  Help pages
  What Wikipedia is not
Some common sense Dos and Don'ts:
  Do be bold
  Do assume good faith
  Do be civil
  Do keep cool!
Do maintain a neutral point of view
  Don't spam
  Don't infringe copyright
Don't edit where you have a conflict of interest
  Don't commit vandalism
  Don't get blocked
If you need further help, you can:
  Ask a question
or you can:
  Get help at the Teahouse
or even:
Ask an experienced editor to "adopt" you

Alternatively, leave me a message at my talk page or type {{helpme}} here on your talk page and someone will try to help.

There are many ways you can contribute to Wikipedia. Here are a few ideas:
  Fight vandalism
Be a WikiFairy or a WikiGnome
  Help contribute to articles
  Perform maintenance tasks

Become a member of a project that interests you
  Help design new templates
Subscribe and contribute to The Signpost

To get some practice editing you can use a sandbox. You can create your own personal sandbox for use any time. It's perfect for working on bigger projects. Then for easy access in the future, you can put {{My sandbox}} on your user page. By the way, seeing as you haven't created a user page yet, simply click here to start it.

Please remember to:

  • Always sign your posts on talk pages. You can do this either by clicking on the button on the edit toolbar or by typing four tildes ~~~~ at the end of your post. This will automatically insert your signature, a link to your talk page, and a timestamp.
  • Leave descriptive edit summaries for your edits. Doing so helps other editors understand what changes you have made and why you made them.
The best way to learn about something is to experience it. Explore, learn, contribute, and don't forget to have some fun!

Sincerely, Rasnaboy (talk) 06:07, 1 May 2019 (UTC)   (Leave me a message)[reply]

There have been two problems with this account: the account has been used for advertising or promotion, which is contrary to the purpose of Wikipedia, and your username indicates that the account represents a business or other organisation or group or a web site, which is also against policy, as an account must be for just one person. Because of those problems, the account has been blocked indefinitely from editing. Additionally, If you receive, or expect to receive, compensation for your contributions to Wikipedia, you must disclose who is paying you to edit.

If you intend to make useful contributions about some topic other than your business or organisation, you may request an unblock. To do so, post the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:CentralAuth to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy. Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In that reason, you must:

  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the kind of edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
If you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal this block. To do so, please read the guide to appealing blocks, then add the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page, replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason for thinking that the block was an error, and publish the page. — JJMC89(T·C) 04:25, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

The Ethics Centre is a not for profit organisation which has a range of services including advice and events. It holds the IP for its talks festival Festival of Dangerous Ideas. We are keen to get the Ethics Centre entry and Festival of Dangerous Ideas updated to contain necessary information for any wiki user to find out more about who The Ethics Centre are and what it does. If we have included copy that looks like we're promoting the business, this was done unintentionally. Please alert us as to which section is an issue and we will fix immediately. We have also used our business name as the user name, which we were unaware to be against policy rules. We would be happy to amend any instances which don't comply with the rules of Wikipedia but would need editing access restored to do so and guidance as to what needs changing. We apologise for the oversight of the rules and will ensure we keep in accordance with policies in future. Our username can be changed from the Centre's name to Socrates 2021, which is currently not taken (and if that is in line with your policies). Thank you. Group accounts are not permitted; you will need to designate a single person to exclusively operate this account and grant no one else access to it. If that is the choice of new username that the person wants, it would be acceptable. Please review conflict of interest and paid editing. If your only goal here is to make edits related to your conflict of interest, you will not be unblocked. If you wish to be a general, individual contributor and edit about topics unrelated to your conflict of interest, please tell what those might be. If you develop a good edit history showing that you understand Wikipedia guidelines and content policies, you might later be permitted to submit edit requests in the area of your COI, detailing changes you feel are needed, but not now. I am declining your request. 331dot (talk) 10:54, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

{{unblock reviewed|1=Thank you for clarifying. We will allocate an individual to access this account and grant no other access to it. Jess will oversee this. Her user name can be Jess Tec. I have checked and it's not taken. I hope this rectifies the issue and the account can now be unblocked. Thank you.Ethicscentre (talk) {{unblock|.}}

Request reason:

We now understand where we have violated wikipedia policy with the use of a company username that can be accessed by several people within the organisation. We have now reassessed our procedure and will delegate only one user to the wiki account. Jess's work email is now associated with the account and will be the only person to access the account. I hope this clears up the matter and we apologise for not realising we had made this error. Ethicscentre (talk) 04:06, 18 February 2021 (UTC)

OK, but what are you going to edit if we unblock you? It wasn't just your name, it was that you added all those links to your own site. What other sort of editing will you do, Jess? Daniel Case (talk) 05:30, 18 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

"Jess Tec" already exists and has edited. If this is not you, please pick another username. cc @Daniel Case: --TheSandDoctor Talk 23:39, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'll remove all links to our website and ensure that this is purely a wiki entry on who The Ethics Centre is and what it does. There will be no external links to promote us or anyone else.

{unblock|I have now changed my username to reflect that I'm solely responsible for my organisation's Wiki entry. I understand that this is viewed as self-promotion so would like this block removed so I can fix this. Please. Uh-oh. Shared accounts is not a good thing. "Any user account should represent an individual and not a group (and an individual should normally only have one user account; see next section). Sharing an account – or the password to an account – with others is not permitted. ..." --Deepfriedokra (talk) 13:41, 7 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@JJMC89: Unblock? --Deepfriedokra (talk) 01:01, 22 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It's not my block, but I advise not lifting the block. It looks like this editor only intends to write about their organisation, which would be inappropriate. --Yamla (talk) 10:37, 22 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
As editor, this entry for The Ethics Centre would describe what the organisation does and what it represents to inform the public. It will not contain any external links to promote anything the Centre does. How is this any different to allowing any organisation to write a Wiki entry to inform the public? Because if this is Wiki's stance then it stands to reason that Greenpeace or United Nations should be blocked too? J3ss at T3C (talk) 02:47, 23 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
This is a very serious accusation you are levelling at Greenpeace and at the United Nations. Please provide your specific evidence these organisations violated our Terms of Use and our policies (WP:COI, WP:PAID, WP:PROMO) by writing articles about themselves. As per WP:OTHERSTUFF, of course, this will not permit you to violate these terms and policies, but we will take down their inappropriate articles. If, however, your accusation is baseless and these articles were, like the vast majority of other Wikipedia articles, written by people with no direct ties to those organisations, written for encyclopedic purposes rather than "to inform the public" (i.e. to promote the organisations), we will let the articles stand. Regardless, you have made a very serious accusation that these organisations have acted inappropriately and I expect you to follow up on this. --Yamla (talk) 10:49, 23 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Yamla: Please do not misunderstand my previous message. I am not accusing any other organisation of violating anything! I'd like to be really clear on that. I am merely asking how any organisation would be able to as you've stated "write about their organisation" without stating what they do? I am clearly unable to resolve this situation as I am not getting any guidance on what I need to do to remove the block and have now made 6 failed attempts at doing so. I will consult one of the official Wiki editors to do so on the organisations behalf in order to have this entry looked into and resolved properly and in accordance with Wiki policies. J3ss at T3C (talk) 00:44, 24 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
We aren't interested in what organisations wish to say about themselves. This is an encyclopedia, not a business directory. See WP:NOT. If you wish to write about your organisation, which is a perfectly reasonable thing to wish to do, you should use your own website or social media sites. --Yamla (talk) 12:01, 24 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'm with Yamla on this one. Changing their username only fixes part of the problem. — JJMC89(T·C) 03:18, 27 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
