Block
Hello zzuuzz. I am currently blocked from editing Wikipeia anywhere else but on this talk page. I am a registered editor who only makes constructive edits to the Wikipedia. Why am I blocked from editing? I am editing from a school IP address, but I don't see how the block should affect me since I am clearly not a sockpuppet of the person who has been doing disruptive edits on this IP address. How can I get unblocked? Thank you. Paul Vaurie (talk) 16:44, 20 January 2022 (UTC)
- Hello Paul Vaurie. I've only applied an anon-only block to your IP address, which shouldn't affect you. However the disruption from your IP address is pretty extensive, so a global block has also been applied by one of the stewards. I've added temporary IPBE to your account, which should allow you to bypass this global block on this wiki. At this point I'd routinely advise you to read the policy. In a month, let's see what happens. Thanks. -- zzuuzz (talk) 19:40, 20 January 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you so much, zzuuzz! Just one last thing - how long am I unblocked for? And where can I see this? Thank you for your help! Paul Vaurie (talk) 19:47, 20 January 2022 (UTC)
- Welcome. As I suggested above, the exemption lasts for one month. This can be seen here. For your own sake I am not going to discuss the IP block in public, but if you visit one of those websites which tells you your IP address, then look at its contributions on Wikipedia, you will get the gist. Unfortunately the abuse from the IP address is obtained by Checkuser data, so you won't get to see the offending edits. Anyway, if you have a problem in a month or beyond, give me a ping, request unblock, or similar. -- zzuuzz (talk) 19:55, 20 January 2022 (UTC)

FC Porto6185 (talk) 17:37, 24 March 2022 (UTC)

SPORTBASIC
Hi, I just wanted to give you a heads up that WP:SPORTBASIC requires that "Sports biographies must include at least one reference to a source providing significant coverage of the subject, excluding database sources."
As an autopatrolled editor, you probably shouldn't be creating mainspace articles like Marlon Harrison which are sourced only to databases. Would you consider either starting pages in draft space or including at least one example of SIGCOV from the beginning? –dlthewave ☎ 01:39, 2 April 2022 (UTC)

DATETOPRES
If MOS:DATETOPRES exists, but is not observed in some football player articles is the problem with the articles in which it is correctly applied or in those where it is not applied at all? Walter Görlitz (talk) 17:26, 23 April 2022 (UTC)
- There’s something called an editing trend. Almost none of the football player articles use the pres. thing like you have it. We should follow the editing trend. Paul Vaurie (talk) 20:32, 23 April 2022 (UTC)
- @Walter Görlitz: However, if you want to create broad changes, go suggest them at WT:WPF. Until then, we should keep within the editing trend, which overrules whatever Wikipedia says about it. Paul Vaurie (talk) 21:05, 23 April 2022 (UTC)

Can you please stop messing around with this article? You have been mis-formatting the infobox; removing valid (albeit blank) infobox paramaters; and removing valid categories. GiantSnowman 06:54, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
- @GiantSnowman: Sorry GS, it’s just the visual editor. Paul Vaurie (talk) 15:46, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
- Correction: the visual editor is responsible for formatting changes. However, I didn't mean to remove any categories or parameters. Danylo Ihnatenko /Ignatenko
Dear Paul Vaurie, please, not doying so, as I done with Ihnatenko surname. You wrongly used here "commonname" it's only Russian variant of spelling vs Ukrainian spelling, because Russian language not have letter "h" instead of Ukrainian. Where in Ukrainian is used "g", in Russian also "g", but if in Ukrainian name is used "h", in Russian is "g". I agree, that Russians variants sometimes is more historically widespread, but it's not the case for incorrect "commonname".--Noel baran (talk) 09:53, 10 June 2022 (UTC)
- Also, please change it and only make a redirect for Ignatenko. Thank you--Noel baran (talk) 09:55, 10 June 2022 (UTC)
- @Noel baran: Hello, thank you for your concern. I will bring up this matter at the Football WikiProject, because I am unsure myself. I will see what the consensus is there, and changes to the article name will be made accordingly. Sorry about this, I may not have fully understood why his name had an H instead of a G. Paul Vaurie (talk) 05:16, 11 June 2022 (UTC)
- I don't know, that is the matter to the Football WikiProject, because this about spelling the names in generally. Is you see Romanization of Ukrainian, you can find two letters: "г", that romanizing as "h" and "ґ" → "g". But Russian not has letter "ґ", only "г" (Romanization of Russian) that will be "g" all time. Very often it's confused, if somebody cames from Ukraine. For these reasons, if some Ihnatenko will be Russian citizen, he will be spelled Ignatenko, but it's incorrect for Ukrainian (even if happened). Ukrainian "Іґнатенко" will be "Ignatenko", but the Ukrainian "Ігнатенко", like in the case of these footballer - "Ihnatenko"--Noel baran (talk) 07:44, 11 June 2022 (UTC)
- also I see, that problem is alike because of "foult" (or foult) of "google translate". Google translate not has direct translation from Ukrainian into English, but only via Russian (i.e. Ukrainian→Russian→English, similary with French etc.) and if somebody will put the name Данило Ігнатенко in google will have not proper spelling-romanization, but Ukrainian-Russian translation, and only after - romanization from Russian (which deceptively looks like from Ukrainian). For this reasons is useful this table--Noel baran (talk) 08:04, 11 June 2022 (UTC)

Can't find French sources
Hi Paul. Maybe you can assist me with this: I want to write an article about fr:Laurent Casanova (football) who made almost 200 appearances for SC Bastia and captained the side in the 1995 Coupe de la Ligue Final. I've been having trouble finding newspaper articles or other reliable sources about him. A web search hasn't turned up anything and I've also tried some newspaper archives. Could you find me some sources or perhaps point me to a good place to look? Kind regards, Robby.is.on (talk) 23:36, 28 July 2022 (UTC)

- @Robby.is.on: To be honest, I'm not finding all that much apart from passing mentions. A perhaps interesting article here that mentions him (but I don't know if it talks about him much more because it's behind a paywall), an interview here (we can't use this). However, I did find something here, a small piece about him, 168 words. I'm sorry I'm not able to help you more. I honestly don't really know where to find newspaper archives for sports newspapers, in English or French. Hope what I found helps a little bit. Paul Vaurie (talk) 21:05, 1 August 2022 (UTC)

- I just found archives for Nice Matin, Corse Matin and Var Matin at [1]. Searching for "Laurent Casanova milieu bastia" turns up two or three articles that seem to be about him specifically. After signing up I found that it's all paywalled though… Robby.is.on (talk) 22:31, 1 August 2022 (UTC)

Footballeur et entraîneur binationaux.
Bonjour,
Houssem Aouar
Hi Paul. Sorry again for the accidental rollback at Houssem Aouar.
I was surprised to see the "League cup" column go at the same article. Could you share your rationale? Kind regards, Robby.is.on (talk) 21:34, 10 January 2023 (UTC)
- @Robby.is.on: For the rollback, no problem!
About the column, I moved it to the "other" section because the Coupe de la Ligue has been abolished in France. If you feel differently feel free to revert that edit. It's just my personal belief that it is beneficial to move it to "other" because I find having an entire column for a league cup that is no longer in use and in which the player has very little appearances to be unnecessary (IMO). Your call, however. I don't really mind. All the best! Paul Vaurie (talk) 21:54, 10 January 2023 (UTC)- Wow, I'm very glad I asked because the abolishment of the Coupe de la Ligue had eluded me altogether. Now I don't feel strongly about the change. Hello, I'm Robertjamal12. I noticed that you recently removed content from Alexander Djiku without adequately explaining why. In the future, it would be helpful to others if you described your changes to Wikipedia with an accurate edit summary. If this was a mistake, don't worry; the removed content has been restored. If you would like to experiment, please use your sandbox. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks. - @Robertjamal12: I'm inclined to assume good faith, but do you think I'm some kind of newbie? Are you gonna go around reverting every single edit that doesn't have an edit summary on Wikipedia just because? My edit is quite clear if you click on it: I replaced two categories on Alexander Djiku with a more precise category that was recently created (by me), Category:French sportspeople of Ghanaian descent. Honestly, kind of disappointed that you reverted and left this message. Paul Vaurie (talk) 01:10, 20 February 2023 (UTC)

- Edit summaries certainly help avoid misunderstandings like this though, and speaking of newbies can be useful for newer editors who don't know why you're removing stuff. Since you still do not seem to make use of them, I'd echo Robert's friendly reminder above. It isn't much extra effort to put a few seconds into writing an edit summary. Mahmat Adoum
Hi Paul. Could you take a look the two French-language sources I added to Mahmat Adoum and see if there's more interesting and relevant information we can extract? I ran the texts through translation services but I find some of the results a bit confusing. For example, the role of the water pump is unclear to me… ;-) Kind regards, Robby.is.on (talk) 10:29, 25 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Robby.is.on: Robby, I apologize. I have no clue how I missed this. Do you still need my help or is this overdue? Paul Vaurie (talk) 16:23, 6 June 2023 (UTC)
- It'd great if you could have a look. Robby.is.on (talk) 16:47, 6 June 2023 (UTC)
- @Robby.is.on: Alright, so I added a sentence about his post-playing career, his place of death, and his approximate birth year based on age at death. These were all mentioned in the Le Sahel source. Now, about the other article, I understand a ceremony was held in his honour in the 4th arrondissement of N'Djamena by the Association sportive des vétérans, but the thing about the pump is confusing. The word motricité is a bit confusing to me. However, my understanding is that a human-powered water pump was inaugurated in the 4th arrondissement of N'Djamena in honour and remembrance of Adoum; later down in the article it says that the water pump will "flow drinkable water for the happiness of the people". I don't know if this makes better sense to you, but I don't think it's particularly notable to be included in the article.
Now, one thing I will suggest is moving the page name to Mahamat Adoum. Both French-language articles refer to him as Mahamat; only the NFT source calls him Mahmat. It would seem that two Chadian sources would better know how to spell his name correctly, in my opinion. Paul Vaurie (talk) 17:12, 6 June 2023 (UTC)
- Splendid! Great work, Paul, thank you. Yes, indeed, as I remember the translation it seemed like it was implied but not explicitly stated that the water pump inauguration was in honour and remembrance of Adoum. I have moved the article as you suggested. Robby.is.on (talk) 08:45, 7 June 2023 (UTC)

CPFC Website
I have already discussed this on the main talk page and it did me no favours whatsover. I got a series of unconstructive and arrogant responses from someone called Merko. You do realise the website will not update anything after the 1st July, they never do. It will be months before they update anything which i explained on the main talk page. None of those players - Nascimento, Goodman, Wells-Morrison and Rodney should be on there. They warmed the bench for one League Cup game in the autumn last year!! Oxford away. Nascimento and Balmer only played in a friendly match. You and several others are like a bunch of Stepford Clowns, relying on a website that never updates and includes players that might have only trained with the first team for a couple of weeks. This is a website that still lists Lewis Brown as being in the under 21 squad even though he now plays for permanently for Bristol Rovers!!!!! Catford Massive (talk) 22:14, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
- Lewis Gordon is still listed not Lewis Brown. I can't be bothered with Wiki anymore because the Stepford Clowns are like robots. You will just come up with "As per Website". Don't bother debating this because you don't listen Catford Massive (talk) 22:21, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
- @Catford Massive: You are not following the rules of Wikipedia, and you are just blatantly stating your opinion without providing actual verifiable information anywhere. As previously mentioned by Merko, we can only go by the official website. You are being rude and condescending, and if I need to bring up the matter again, I will seek an administrator to step in. That is all that I will tell you. Goodbye. Paul Vaurie (talk) 22:25, 10 June 2023 (UTC)

Summer projects...
Hi Paul - you do such excellent work on French football club articles, and I never seem to have time. So I'm lodging some projects here you can either look at or ignore. All impact teams who are in National 3 or above for the 23/24 season:
- Thionville FC became US Thionville Lusitanos in 2021. There is a source on the talk page
- Trélissac FC became Trélissac-Antonne Périgord FC in 2020 after a merger [2]
- Stade Beaucairois (officially Stade Beaucairois 30) have just become Stade Beaucairois FC after a merger. [3]
Cheers, Gricehead (talk) 14:25, 16 June 2023 (UTC)
- Hey Gricehead, I appreciate it! I will take a look at these projects and see what I can do. However, I've been trying to cut down myself on the time I spend on Wikipedia lately, although it's hard. If I find time and the strength, I will definitely work on these. Thanks again, and happy editing! Paul Vaurie (talk) 16:39, 16 June 2023 (UTC)
- Gricehead; are you looking more for a page move or the creation of entirely new articles? For example, Thionville FC merged with the much smaller Thionville ASPSF. I don't even know if its appropriate to create a new article or just describe the merger on that article and move the page. Paul Vaurie (talk) 15:18, 24 June 2023 (UTC)
- Sorry for the delay in replying, I was away for the weekend. Usually in these cases I just do a page move and then add the details into the article. Only if it is two clubs with existing articles merging do I normally create a new article. Cheers, Gricehead (talk) 08:25, 26 June 2023 (UTC)
- @Gricehead: Perfect, that’s exactly what I was thinking. I’ll get on these soon enough. Thanks again. Paul Vaurie (talk) 09:22, 26 June 2023 (UTC)

U19 and U17 French championships
Hello, do you really think "the U18 youth championship of France was split into two age groups in 2009" ?? It wasn't even called U18 but "18 ans", and the U17 league wasn't a new league, it was just the "16 ans" league renamed, and without any change in age eligibility. Age eligibility changes happened in 1996 (age limit changed from 1st August to 1st January like in all international competitions) and 2002 (age limit changed from maximum 18 years old on the year of the end of the competition, to maximum 19 years old on the year of the end of the competition), and name changes happened in 1999, 2002 and 2009. There were no age eligibility change in 2009 ! It was just a renaming to adopt international naming standards. It is clear that you know nothing about Youth French football. Frenchl (talk) 10:22, 15 July 2023 (UTC)
- First of all, you are not assuming good faith, a very important principle on Wikipedia. Secondly, you are not following the rules of verifiability, which means that what you just said must come from a source. Please provide a source for what you have just said, and then you can go back and edit the article as such. Paul Vaurie (talk) 10:32, 15 July 2023 (UTC)
- I'm absolutely assuming your good faith, i'm just telling you you're ignorant about French football. You have two sources that use the names "18 ans" and "16 ans", why did you change these names to U18 and U16 ?? This are not equivalent names. Just respect what the source says and do not interpret it, that's it. "18 ans" was not U18 nor "moins de 18 ans", it was a age class that corresponded to U19. Frenchl (talk) 10:37, 15 July 2023 (UTC)
- I don't take things personally, but a lesson for you is that calling someone ignorant is NOT assuming good faith. That is a straight up insult. Find an appropriate source, please, as I stated previously. Paul Vaurie (talk) 10:41, 15 July 2023 (UTC)
- You ignored some facts about how Youth French football worked before 2009, this is not insulting to tell you that.
- Find a source that prove that "18 ans" corresponds to under-18 level. There is none ! It's your own interpretation.
- Because of this erroneous interpretation, I have to search for some sources that prove that "18 ans" was equivalent to under-19 level. No problem I'll find them but it should be your work. Frenchl (talk) 10:54, 15 July 2023 (UTC)
Lucy Bronze/nationalities and similar basic information in general
Not only has not including "English" in the lede of the Lucy Bronze article been discussed before, but (as I said), you're going to look like a troll if you say there's no "proof" of individuals' nationalities when the article contains multiple ABOUTSELF sources, as well as both national and domestic clubs saying the same. Based on your logic, we're going to need to see official documents for the birth dates of every bio on Wikipedia. Kingsif (talk) 21:53, 16 July 2023 (UTC)
- @Kingsif: Hello. First of all, you need to remember this rule, which you missed when you reverted my edit under the pretext that I was "trolling", and without initially providing an explanation. However, I don't want to focus on that and I don't mind too much, so let's move on.
Firstly, I would hardly say that this is an actual "discussion" about Lucy Bronze's nationality - no consensus was reached. Spike 'em added a small, sensible comment, which was followed by a mammoth comment by you, but no one responded. This cannot be considered consensus to remove nationality in the lede - it is just your viewpoint in a specific case. Now, in my edit summary here, it was not cautious to write that she has no proof of Portuguese citizenship, since she does seem to have it considering Barcelona registered her as a Portuguese player (written in her article). However, your claim here that we have "seen" her Portuguese passport thanks to videos taken by UEFA is equally careless, because you just made a statement without providing any proof, going against the Wikipedia principle of WP:Verifiability. But that doesn't matter, because yes, she seemingly has Portuguese and British citizenship. Now, my actual issue is that you are going against all the guidelines and consensus reached by Wikipedia:WikiProject Football regarding nationality in the lede. The consensus reached in the case of a player like Lucy Bronze, and you can go ask this here if you want, is that she is an "English professional footballer". This is the case for several reasons. Firstly, she was born in and grew up in England. Secondly, she has only ever represented England at international level. That's about enough for here nationality to be "English" in the lede. In the case of Lucy Bronze, however, the evidence is overwhelmingly in the favor of writing "English". We do not write "British" because in football, the United Kingdom is split into four different nations, with each having their football association and national team. We have reached consensus not to use hyphenated names in the case of a dual-national. However, holding two nationalities is not inherently meaning that both nationalities are relevant to the person in question. In the case of Lucy Bronze, her English nationality is the only thing that is relevant in the lede, as MOS:LEADBIO would suggest. Her Portuguese citizenship does not confer anything significant. She is only Portuguese by origin and on paper; however, she represents England and was born in and grew up there. There is clear consensus that in a case such as Lucy Bronze, we should just write "English". In more complicated cases, such as when a player has three nationalities and/or is born in a different country than they represent, then we might omit the nationality in the opening sentence and just explain the situation further down in the lede. If you have any questions, I suggest raising them here. I hope that you now understand why it would be against Wikipedia standards to label Lucy Bronze anything other than English in the lede section. Paul Vaurie (talk) 22:52, 16 July 2023 (UTC)
- If you bothered to read the
mammoth comment
you would see that I addressed all those points, that's why I pointed you to it. I hope you bothered to read it, since you now want me to read an even longer comment of yours going over all the things I refuted in it. Note also, that talkpage comment isn't the only discussion, and I think I even prefaced it by saying "let me summarise what has been said before". And this is besides the point, but it's definitely less careless for me to state a fact without a source than it was for you to deny sourced facts, wasn't it. - Anyway, when a BLP subject indicates they don't like being described as a nationality which they technically are not, there isn't a good reason to insist on doing it. Wider than just Bronze, WP:Football ought to remember that BLPs aren't just sports bios, i.e. it is fine for the "sporting nationality" line to say English, but in the spirit of accuracy the person as a person (they're more than a player, the BLPs are not just stat sheets) should not be labelled as something we know isn't true/wholly true. Dude, I have always understood why WP:Football people think
it would be against Wikipedia standards to label Lucy Bronze anything other than English
, but I disagree that it would, and I think doing so is actually what would go against Wikipedia standards (see, accuracy). It must be remembered that these are real people, too, it sounds insane to say "some of us have discussed how we want to label people and even though she doesn't like it, she will now be called only X nationality according to the biggest reference work in the world". Kingsif (talk) 23:30, 16 July 2023 (UTC) - Another tangential point, but we don't need to AGF for edits that look like clear trolling, nor give revert reasons for such edits per things like WP:DONTFEED. As I said, the attitude that we don't take ABOUTSELF statements on basic info, from an account I am unfamiliar with, did seem like such, because it is the same MO as troll accounts I have seen elsewhere the keep removing sourced infobox stuff with "can you show me the birth certificate" etc. Just wanted to take the opportunity to provide a longer reason for why it seemed as such. Kingsif (talk) 23:34, 16 July 2023 (UTC)
- @Kingsif: I read your mammoth comment. But if you read mine, you'll understand why "English" is correct, per WikiProject standards.
I did not deny sourced facts, I instead did not thoroughly search the article prior to writing that summary, which was uncautious, but is completely equivalent to writing or saying unverifiable information.
If you fully understood the entire reasoning to writing "English" beforehand, then I wasted a lot of time explaining what I have just explained. Since Lucy Bronze is first and foremost in the scope of WikiProject Football as that is what makes her notable, and that this is the consensus for this type of player as decreed by this WikiProject, then I will go back and change her nationality to English again. Paul Vaurie (talk) 23:54, 16 July 2023 (UTC)- It's not correct, though, is it? I'm sorry you wasted time, but you read my previous comment so read my responses to all your arguments and presumably knew that restating them wouldn't affect me. Being a footballer makes her notable, but it is not her entire life. BLP overrides WP:Football, and knowingly writing inaccurate statements (especially where it's about identity of a living person) just because it's the most relevant part of her identity - something unchanging - according to a project discussion, is so very wrong. We've not moved past an impasse, so I don't think it's appropriate for you to yet change the contentious information.
- Since we're here, I'd be interested in broadening this scope. In the other direction, though. There's plenty of footballers who represent a nation in which they were not born and, though some people don't seem to realise this, they don't actually need to acquire legal nationality in order for FIFA to let them play. So describing e.g. Anna Gornell as Latvian seems plainly untrue - and the Declan Rice article said Irish for a long time. In some cases, we know how far nationality is automatically inherited or not, in others it's unclear if the player has the nationality of their adopted national team. Perhaps revisiting the whole issue would be wise. Kingsif (talk) 00:03, 17 July 2023 (UTC)
- @Kingsif: I like your ambitions of grandeur, but we can only go by WikiProject Football's discretion on this specific case. "BLP" does not inherently override what WP:WPF has to say. If you would like to broaden your argument, do not attack Lucy Bronze's specific case but rather the root issue. I suggest you drop a comment at WT:WPF regarding nationality, although I cannot guarantee you it will be received very well over there. Please stop changing what the consensus is for the scenario of Bronze. Paul Vaurie (talk) 02:22, 17 July 2023 (UTC)
"BLP" does not inherently override what WP:WPF has to say.
- it really does, though. As I see it, there is a person who has expressed distaste at being labelled just English and yet a group of other people are saying they don't care because they've had a chat about wanting to mislead on the website everyone goes to for these facts, because they can't see past the badge on her shirt. It shouldn't be grand ambition: it's common sense.- It shocks me that editors have football-tinted glasses and can't acknowledge the world outside of the sporting context, and outside of their project discussions, to know that players have identities beyond sport and Wikipedia biographies (which are always under WP:BLP, an actual policy, before subject-level projects) cannot be wrong for the sake of sport (so their consensus really counts for nothing). I've discussed it nicely with you, but BLP says
Do not label people with contentious labels, loaded language, or terms that lack precision
, so I suggest you stop doing that. I know I can't try to correct all these articles alone, and I know WP:Football is one of the more cabal-like groups, but as the previous discussion said (and as I've pointed out again), this BLP subject has used their social media to indicate they don't like it, so it's one article where it's worth making sure it's not used. Even if you just want to say IAR because of that for this one. Kingsif (talk) 02:50, 17 July 2023 (UTC)- @Kingsif: There comes a point when I don't really have anything else to add to the discussion. You cannot change a specific article and expect changes across an entire WikiProject. If you want to suggest changes, find a discussion board on the WikiProject that this concerns. But stop trying to be a vigilante of some sort. I am only going by the consensus found. By the way, Lucy Bronze is only notable for being an English footballer, and nothing else. Paul Vaurie (talk) 08:55, 17 July 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, because you have no leg to stand on, truly. As I said, I'm not expecting changes across the whole project, but having made the V checks when other users added the information, I find it particularly important to keep this article correct. It's not vigilante to improve the encyclopedia just because it disagrees with you, sorry to say but it's not about what other people think - I'm also not impressed at you clearly using such a description to try and paint my edit/argument as maverick and noble but inappropriate when it's literally just stopping you from violating BLP for misguided tunnel-vision. And I have to disagree on that last point: she's only notable for being a footballer, with career highlights playing for England and for teams in France and Spain. Remember "footballer for the England national team" is an occupation, "English" is a label - just like "politician" is an occupation, "political" is a label and "teacher" is an occupation, "smart" is a label. Have to be careful which is used. Kingsif (talk) 10:16, 17 July 2023 (UTC)
- I'm not even sure "footballer for the England national team" is an occupation, since they are not regularly paid for that. Frenchl (talk) 13:44, 17 July 2023 (UTC)

- @Kingsif: There comes a point when I don't really have anything else to add to the discussion.
- @Kingsif: I read your mammoth comment. But if you read mine, you'll understand why "English" is correct, per WikiProject standards.
- On a technical note, I don't know if you'll want this discussion kept on your talk page, but given the length it's at and specificity we've reached I think it might be useful to move it to the article talk page. Kingsif (talk) 10:19, 17 July 2023 (UTC)
- @Kingsif: If you want to go against consensus, you're not doing anyone any favors, but only messing up what we have agreed upon on Wikipedia as a community. Stop going against the consensus that has been agreed upon on Wikipedia:WikiProject Football. Please discuss any complaints there.
I will leave a note on the Lucy Bronze talk page once I archive this. Paul Vaurie (talk) 10:45, 17 July 2023 (UTC)- As I've said, a WikiProject consensus does not outrank BLP guidelines where the issue overlaps, no matter how much the participants are fond of it. And, as I said, since I know WP:Football a stubborn bunch (I know you're saying "go there" either because you don't have the energy, or to invoke a pile-on to try and get me to shut up, but you are the only one who's decided the lack of contentious label is a problem, so I won't) but the BLP subject has disagreed with what you want to add, consider the exclusion at this article WP:IAR if you must - there's enough exceptions already it shouldn't matter. It doesn't "mess up" anything and I think you know that. Kingsif (talk) 10:57, 17 July 2023 (UTC)
- @Kingsif: Maybe I didn't look properly, but nowhere in WP:BLP does it say anything about nationality, and English is not a contentious label or anything of the sort. You can't possibly compare the word "political" to "English". Lucy Bronze is an English professional footballer, that's why she plays for England (and more). She's English. Paul Vaurie (talk) 11:28, 17 July 2023 (UTC)
- Shifting the debate to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football#Lucy Bronze. Paul Vaurie (talk) 11:42, 17 July 2023 (UTC)
- I see you've moved the debate; I'll leave what I was typing here, since it is framed as a response, and then add something there. I still think this is a BLP issue before it's a WP:Football issue, and that the only discussion that should start at the WikiProject is stopping applying uniformity altogether, but I appreciate your efforts. The reply I was typing:
- Nationalities are considered labels, but you're right, that's at the MOS page and isn't linked, unhelpfully. There's an essay, WP:UKNATIONALS, on how to interpret WP:MOSBIO (a guideline) for describing nationality of British people. You're probably most interested in the Sport and Change sections: the first does say when in doubt to follow a sport's own standards (and football has separate England etc. teams) but also says
Moreover, some British sportspeople (e.g. Ryan Giggs, Jamie Murray, Mark Bennett) have represented both the entire United Kingdom and one of the constituent countries at different points during their careers. In such situations the most suitable nationality to describe the subject with is determined on case by case basis.
The second, about when to change 'British' to a constituent nation and vice versa, does say that seeking sources for what label is best should be the way to go. It also has an entire subsection saying that there shouldn't be enforced uniformity:It is not possible to create a uniforming guideline
andRe-labelling nationalities on grounds of consistency... is strongly discouraged.
which the WP:Football consensus seems to be wanting to go against. At MOSBIO, the MOS:NATIONALITY section has a footnote which saysconsider whether the subject has a preference on which nationality they identify by.

Invitation
Hello Paul Vaurie!
- The New Pages Patrol is currently struggling to keep up with the influx of new articles needing review. We could use a few extra hands to help.
- We think that someone with your activity and experience is very likely to meet the guidelines for granting.
- Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time, but it requires a strong understanding of Wikipedia’s CSD policy and notability guidelines.
- Kindly read the tutorial before making your decision, and feel free to post on the project talk page with questions.
- If patrolling new pages is something you'd be willing to help out with, please consider applying here.
Thank you for your consideration. We hope to see you around!

Pending changes reviewer granted
Hello. Your account has been granted the "pending changes reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on pages protected by pending changes. The list of articles awaiting review is located at Special:PendingChanges, while the list of articles that have pending changes protection turned on is located at Special:StablePages.
Being granted reviewer rights neither grants you status nor changes how you can edit articles. If you do not want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time.

Edit reason
Since I don't want this to be tense, I have reverted your edit because it wasn't a typo (see sixth form, type of school common in the Commonwealth). But I have to say, when I saw the edit reason I was surprised: there was no need for an additional all-caps POINT when you had already calmly if too-brusquely tried to explain yourself in the previous one.
As for WP:DROPTHESTICK, it's funny, because I've been thinking that of you. As I said, I appreciate that you want to bring all football articles to meet a standard of describing nationality that you think is good, but you are mass-adding text to articles based on an advice essay that you cannot assert has authority for the content being challenged. You can't; you're over-extending the purpose of the project recommendation; and whenever you're challenged, you try to shut down the other users - be it reporting a user who is not ideal when contributing to discussions you ask for then abandon or, of course, just changing content to your preferred version and then abandoning continuing discussions until they close so you "win".
All this is to say, I do not want our editing relations to be tense. If you insist on continuing to force edits that do not have authority over other edits, you can at least not send all-caps angry messages to people who have politely opposed you. Kingsif (talk) 05:55, 2 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Kingsif: No problem, sorry, I thought that was a typo for some reason. I didn't understand the language and thank you for reverting that edit.
However, I do not remember ever having sent "all-caps angry messages" to anybody. Edit descriptions are not messages to anyone, and I have never mentioned your name in an edit summary, because no one owns content on Wikipedia. The WP:DROPTHESTICK was written in all caps for obvious reasons, because that is standard, but "ABOUT LAST EDIT" was written in all-caps to make it clear to whoever was reading the summary below that the edit summary above had something important to do with it. That's all. It's just easier to notice uppercase then lowercase for the purpose of grabbing attention.
I will say that I do not like the accusations of "shutting down other users" that you are making against me, and by the way, your points are invalid; if by "reporting a user" you were referring to Frenchl, well, Frenchl's report was valid due to their previous persistent disruptive editing, and it can be argued that you yourself abandoned the Lucy Bronze discussion since you did not respond to Koncorde's final comment on the discussion (and I am not inciting you to do so, because we have dropped the stick together, as recommended by Koncorde). New page reviewer granted
Hi Paul Vaurie. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers
" user group. Please check back at the permissions page in case your user right is time-limited or probationary. This user group allows you to review new pages through the Curation system and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or nominate them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is vital to maintaining the integrity of the encyclopedia. If you have not already done so, you must read the tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the deletion policy. If you need any help or want to discuss the process, you are welcome to use the new page reviewer talk page or ask via the NPP Discord. In addition, please remember:
- Be nice to new editors. They are usually not aware that they are doing anything wrong. Do make use of the message feature when tagging pages for maintenance so that they are aware.
- You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted. Please be formal and polite in your approach to them – even if they are not.
- If you are not sure what to do with a page, don't review it – just leave it for another reviewer.
- Accuracy is more important than speed. Take your time to patrol each page. Steps such as checking for copyright violations using Earwig's copyright violation detector, checking for duplicate articles, and evaluating sources (both in the article, and if needed, via a Google search) for compliance with the general notability guideline are mandatory and will take a few minutes per article.
- Please review some of our flowcharts (1, 2) to help ensure you don't forget any required steps.
- Use the message feature to communicate with article creators and offer advice as much as possible.
The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you also may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In cases of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, or long-term inactivity, the right may be withdrawn at administrator discretion. If you can read any languages other than English, please add yourself to the list of new page reviewers with language proficiencies. Courcelles (talk) 16:40, 3 August 2023 (UTC)
AFDs
Hello, Paul Vaurie,
Please do not close or relist AFD discussions hours early. There is no reason to do so and it can cut off debate. This is especially true for discussions that haven't been relisted. I can see that you are an eager editor but in the past, we have had a problem with NACs that have happened 10 or 12 hours before a discussion was due to be closed and this shouldn't start happening again.
If you want to be closing/relisting discussions regularly, you should also review Wikipedia:Non-admin closure and know it backwards and forwards. Don't close any close calls, you do not want a closure to be brought to Wikipedia:Deletion review which is usually an unpleasant experience (believe me). Thank you for your help. Liz Read! Talk! 05:48, 4 August 2023 (UTC)
- For example, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/University of Cebu was due to be closed on Saturday but you closed it today, on Thursday. There was no argument that this was an appropriate Speedy Keep so it shouldn't have been closed days early even if opinion was unanimous (so far). I won't revert you this time as I'm pretty sure that opinion wouldn't drastically change in the next two days but this is a textbook example of what you shouldn't be doing. Liz Read! Talk! 06:26, 4 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Liz: Ok, sorry. I thought that most the of AFDs that I had closed, including University of Cebu, were not close-calls and were all going to be SNOW keeps or redirects as there would be a "snowball's chance in hell" of an argument going the other way. Paul Vaurie (talk) 06:59, 4 August 2023 (UTC)
Soccerway
Hello, Soccerway is clearly not a reliable source for nationality, they have too many errors. Footballdatabase is even worse. Frenchl (talk) 23:13, 5 August 2023 (UTC)
- and also for place of birth. Two days ago Sassi was categorized as a "Footballer from Tunis". Clearly better sources are needed for both his place of birth and his nationality. Frenchl (talk) 23:19, 5 August 2023 (UTC)
- I'm going to need some kind of discussion or proof of this from WPFOOTY for you to be able to just discard as Soccerway and FootballDatabase.eu, two widely utilized and trusted sources, as inaccurate for nationality. If better sources are available, then we should use them, but by no means are Soccerway and FootballDatabase inaccurate for this, unless otherwise discussed. You can bring this up at WT:WPF if you want. Paul Vaurie (talk) 23:23, 5 August 2023 (UTC)
- They are good source for match data, but that's it. Footballdatabase is user-generated and their contributors make no difference between nationality and origins. I find it bizarre that we have a country of birth if we don't have a city of birth. Frenchl (talk) 23:56, 5 August 2023 (UTC)

rollback
Hi Paul Vaurie. After reviewing your request, I have enabled rollback on your account. Please keep the following things in mind while using rollback:
- Being granted rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle. It just adds a [Rollback] button next to a page's latest live rebision - that's all. It does not grant you any additional "status" on Wikipedia, nor does it change how Wikipedia policies apply to you.
- Rollback should be used to revert clear and unambiguous cases of vandalism only. Never use rollback to revert good faith edits.
- Rollback should never be used to edit war, and it should never be used in a content-related dispute to restore the page to your preferred revision. If rollback is abused or used for this purpose or other inappropriate purpose, the rights will be revoked.
- Use common sense. If you're not sure about something, ask!
If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:Administrators' guide/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into trouble or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Thank you for helping to reduce vandalism. Happy editing! Beeblebrox (talk) 17:31, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
Tagging pages for speedy deletion
Hello, Paul Vaurie,
If you are going to tag pages for speedy deletion, or any type of deletion (CSD, PROD, AFD/MFD/RFD/etc.), you need to post a notification on the talk page of the page creator so they are aware that their articles might be deleted and why. This is done most easily by using Twinkle to tag pages. Just set your Twinkle Preferences to "Notify page creator" and then Twinkle will post these notices for you when you tag a page. This is really an important part of the deletion process so please start doing this.
Also, give an editor more than 5 minutes to work on their article, unless it is a copyright violation or BLP-violating content or vandalism, you shouldn't tag a page for deletion immediately after it has been created. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 03:33, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Liz: I have that set on my Twinkle preferences, I just forgot to use Twinkle to tag a bage and I just used {{db-g11}} directly on the draft. Will made sure to use Twinkle next time. Paul Vaurie (talk) 04:48, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks. That's all I ask! Liz Read! Talk! 06:23, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
Reasons of deletion
Hi Paul Vaurie,
Why are you tagging to report with proposed deletion of the former Foothill Transit bus lines that are discontinued? Did I ever duplication anything? You claimed I don't credible with significance how embarrassing are you. If I were you I never put misinformation with proposed deletion of my page. It was the Foothill Transit has made service changes that are impacted and discontinued bus lines due to low ridership that's how I did investigate the former Foothill Transit bus lines that are used to be without problem. My information is right and I never copy anything basically, you shouldn't tag to deletion of my page. That's premature, drastic and illiterate. I did removed of your requesting with proposal deletion. Thank you (Cool90630)(talk) 06:28, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
- You better to stop trolling my page. Enough is enough you claimed I was violated page curation. I was not doing anything without duplication and wrong information. What is wrong with you? I am not misinformation to any Wikipedia editor. This is your warning! You don't like it then stay away or ignore of my Wikipedia page and chill out as fresh air or relax. Cool90630 (talk) 07:01, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
- You're a funny guy, you're warning me!
In a more serious tone, stop disruptively editing Wikipedia and more specifically my talk page. Paul Vaurie (talk) 07:02, 11 August 2023 (UTC)- Mr Paul Vaurie, you can delete the discontinued octa bus routes and former San Diego MTS bus routes as well. I am sorry what I did with wrongdoing and please accept my apology plus don't suspended my Wikipedia page. I am not tried to be rude and make jokes with you. I already gave up now! Cool90630 (talk) 10:49, 11 August 2023 (UTC)

AFD
Hello, Paul Vaurie,
I see you closed the discussion on Chiara Bouziane but you neither untagged the article being discussed nor put the appropriate AFD tag on the talk page. Closures are easier when you use XFDcloser which takes care of these steps for you.
I think you might be taking on too many different administrative responsibilities right now. Please slow down and take your time so you do them correctly and completely. There is no rush here but it's important to follow through and complete a deletion discussion closure. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 06:50, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Liz: I understand the confusion. You see, I nominated that article for deletion myself. Is there a different way I should have closed it in good-faith? Paul Vaurie (talk) 06:55, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
- Ah, apologies. I see that there are instructions here. I should not have quick closed it. Is it too late now or should I go back and fix it? Paul Vaurie (talk) 06:57, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
- By the way, when I clicked on "quick close", I didn't think that it would close it automatically, I thought that there would be a "submit query" button, but apparently not. Paul Vaurie (talk) 07:19, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Liz: It says on WP:AFD that
If no one has supported deletion of the article you may close the discussion yourself as a WP:Speedy keep, or you may leave it for someone else to close the discussion.
What was the problem with me closing it? Was it that I accidentally closed it from the Football deletion sorting when I should have done it from the AfD page itself? Paul Vaurie (talk) 07:54, 11 August 2023 (UTC)- I didn't mean to imply that there was a problem with your closure. If you made the nomination and there are no Delete votes, you can always withdraw the nomination and close the discussion early as a Speedy Keep. My issue was that you didn't complete the closure, the article needed to be untagged and a note put on the talk page stating the outcome of the AFD. That's what I was referring to.
- My other comment was that I'm seeing you all over this project, taking on different administrative responsibilities and I'm concerned that you might be doing too much in too many different areas over a short period of time. This my personal opinion after ten years on the project and seeing very talented editors get themselves into trouble when they moved from editing articles to doing administrative tasks. It's much better to learn a specific area (new page patrolling, relisting AFDs, handling pending edits, draftifying articles, using rollback, CSD tagging) for a few weeks/months before moving on to learning a new skill. Doing administrative work, making decisions that affect other editors' work can go to ones head and you can take it too far and then editors raise complaints. You don't want to make a trip to ANI. I'm not saying that you have done anything wrong (if I saw something concerning, I would say so!), it's just that I see the potential for that to happen. My goal is to keep good, productive editors active on the project and so I was just advising you to slow down a little. I hope you can see that this comes from a place of good faith. Let me know if you have any more questions. Liz Read! Talk! 01:42, 12 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Liz: Thank you for your concerns, Liz.
About the AFD: I understand now. I went back and untagged the article and put a note on the talk page. I'll make sure not to accidentally do what I did last time.
About what I'm doing: I see what you're saying. I have been getting into a few sticky situations recently, so I think you're right in that I should calm down on my administrative actions. I've just been impressed by how large the backlogs are, and I want to help. I will be more careful, as you are right, a trip to ANI would not be helpful. Thanks for your supervision. Please take more care to judge notability of topics that you PROD
Hi! I’ve objected to two of your recent PRODs at Jeki Airstrip and Cape Town Stock Exchange. With the first one, I felt PROD is not appropriate for an airport large enough to have a 3-letter code and that verifiably exists. A consensus on the merits can be reached at AfD.
As for the second one, I’ve expanded it quite a bit and improved the sourcing, as it is a clearly notable topic and it took me a single search to demonstrate notability.
I find it a bit disconcerting that an experienced editor with advanced user rights decided to use PROD rather than AfD for such an article. Did you make a reasonable effort to check the notability of the topic and the existence of sources?
Furthermore, in both cases you PRODed the articles within six hours of creation. One of them was less than four hours.
Please be a little more circumspect.
Whack! You've been whacked with a wet trout. Don't take this too seriously. Someone just wants to let you know that you did something silly. |
RadioactiveBoulevardier (talk) 07:05, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
- @RadioactiveBoulevardier: Sounds like I should just use AfD next time. Will do that, thanks. However, I don't see the issue of nominating within several hours of nomination. There is no rule preventing that. Paul Vaurie (talk) 07:09, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, I personally use AfD exclusively 👍
- Per WP:PROD,
PROD must only be used if no opposition to the deletion is expected.
This would tend to imply the exclusion of a case where the notability or other criterion is in any way ambiguous. - Ypu’re correct that there is no official policy or guideline against rapid nominations, but it’s considered to be good practice to allow some time for the article to be improved. Often stubs get pushed out to mainspace with the idea that other editors will show up and help out, which generally does happen.

Thank you for reviewing my draft article on Janet A. W. Elliott. I'm trying to understand the reason that you gave for declining my draft "More importantly, no independent, secondary and reliable sources were cited." You are correct that all the sources I cited to establish Elliott's notability as an academic were primary sources (direct links to the announcement of honors on the websites of academic societies.) I provided https://rsc-src.ca/sites/default/files/2022%20New%20Member%20List_EN_0.pdf as the publication of the Royal Society of Canada, thus a reliable source to establish Elliott's notability. However, my understanding from reading Wikipedia:Notability (academics) is that there's no requirement that such a source be secondary: "For documenting that a person has been elected member or fellow (but not for a judgement of whether or not that membership/fellowship is prestigious), publications of the electing institution are considered a reliable source." Can you please take a look at my draft again and reconsider your decision to reject it? Thank you! RaymondYee (talk) 12:47, 11 August 2023 (UTC)

Hi, could you indicate where "it's been discussed not to have B team categories for French football club articles", expand on your opinion that it's "not a valid category", and why the fact the "reserve team does not have an article itself" matters? Also, trying to speedy delete the category on the grounds that it's empty after going out of your way to make it empty is a really sly move, and not one I would expect from an experienced editor. Really poor form. Mattythewhite (talk) 18:45, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Mattythewhite: I couldn't point you to the exact discussion, but I remember leaving a message on GiantSnowman's talk page once. I think it was this, and then he responded here.
I don't necessarily think much discussion is needed here; these two categories are the only two of their kind, they are practically empty and do not serve a great purpose as everything is already included in the main category. It would be a hefty amount of work to go back and put every Monaco player that played for the reserves in Monaco II; also, note that over 90% of players that go from the academy to first team go through the reserves at one point. If you follow the tips given by those comments, that would help improve the article, but it seems to me that Edward Hayter quite simply isn't notable enough at the moment. Paul Vaurie (talk) 23:15, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
- what would make him more notable? I'm not sure to understand why he's not, is in it how it's written? Veganpurplefox (talk) 23:18, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Veganpurplefox: You can't make someone notable. This is about the subject, not the article. Perhaps you should review WP:Notability. Paul Vaurie (talk) 23:28, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
- Ive read those many times but im still so confused. I also dont get why some barely have articles written about them and has a wiki page Veganpurplefox (talk) 23:32, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
- As much as people try to explain to me its never clear. I need more details. What magazines can i use and all. Veganpurplefox (talk) 23:34, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
- There are also subject-specific notability guidelines, which is why you may sometimes see seemingly non-notable topics have articles. You may want to look at WP:GNG, which is clear in its wording:
A topic is presumed to be suitable for a stand-alone article or list when it has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject.
It then elaborates on what that entails. If you have other questions, I can direct you to the WP:Teahouse. Paul Vaurie (talk) 23:51, 11 August 2023 (UTC)- so example if he could be written only about him and his work on just one or 2 more article by a reliable source ,could he be notable? Veganpurplefox (talk) 00:03, 12 August 2023 (UTC)
- It doesn't look probable to me, seeing that it was declined four times. He fails WP:NACTOR, WP:GNG and WP:ANYBIO per the review in January 2023. I would take any questions you have to the Teahouse, as some more experienced editors might help you there. Paul Vaurie (talk) 00:20, 12 August 2023 (UTC)
- Im reaching out to medias to hopefully theyll make articles on him. Also how does it work if I want to translate the Victoria Emslie article in another language? Veganpurplefox (talk) 14:23, 13 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Veganpurplefox: Ok. About translation, I'm not sure; however, it could depend on the different language Wikipedia's notability guidelines if that is even feasible. Again, the Teahouse could better answer this, I do not have much experience doing this. I tried once and it didn't work. Paul Vaurie (talk) 16:57, 13 August 2023 (UTC)

AfC - Declining NPOV
Hi. You declined Draft:Leigh Read for NPOV. However, as this can be a subjective criteria and this is an edge case, you should generally explain how you think it is not written in a neutral tone so the submitter knows exactly what they need to improve. Cheers, Curbon7 (talk) 01:05, 12 August 2023 (UTC)
- Will do, thanks. Paul Vaurie (talk) 01:10, 12 August 2023 (UTC)

Magazine
hello, if there are magazines Edward Hayter was in but only physical (no online) how can I access the texts? I live nowhere near UK so I cannot just go in there to ask if they still have physical magazines that were out years ago. Veganpurplefox (talk) 18:14, 13 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Veganpurplefox: Personally, I have only ever used online sources. I have never dealt with offline sources, although they are valid sources. Again, someone at the WP:Teahouse could better answer your questions. Sorry, but I cannot help you more. Paul Vaurie (talk) 18:16, 13 August 2023 (UTC)

AfD nominations on new articles
Hey Paul Vaurie. First off, thank you for reviewing new pages, it's very much appreciated. I'm reaching out because I noticed your AfD nomination of Drew Barrymore (SZA Song). Based on the page history, the article was nominated 12 minutes after being created. It's best practice to wait until at least an hour after the page has been created to nominate it for AfD, per Wikipedia:New_pages_patrol#Care. Not sure if you were aware of this, but I just wanted to let you know. Hey man im josh (talk) 19:39, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Hey man im josh: Thanks Josh, I had not seen that. I will keep that in mind, thank you. Paul Vaurie (talk) 19:42, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
William Thomas Drain
Being new to editing in Wiki is challenging. I was hoping to get Williams page approved and then continue to update with information on hand. His father Thomas Drain has a page, but played in association that kept good records with solid club historians. I do have a number of news paper articles and statistics of his clubs appearances. I don't have the skill to edit this information in the draft and was hoping to do so was the page was approved. Neilf72 (talk) 06:29, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Neilf72: Hello Neilf72. Welcome to Wikipedia! However, I do not think I am able to help you much with improving the article. You can ask questions at the WP:Teahouse if you wish. Thanks! Paul Vaurie (talk) 07:36, 17 August 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Paul, William has a team photo, multiple news articles all supported by the national library of Australia NLA. This is where I have drawn this information from.
- His father Thomas Drain has almost no information on his page but a book to verify his existence. But yet he has a page. The national library of Australia is significant and a highly prized and used resource for Australians. I cannot see how a newspaper arrival written 90 years ago that is now stored in the archives of the Australian National Library not legal tender.
- All information has been sourced from the NLA and is noted on every link I have provided.
- I have even provided a photo so I am perplexed as why, with all of this information and a historical photo why William Drain cannot be verified? Neilf72 (talk) 08:33, 17 August 2023 (UTC)

I won't assume to whom it was directed, but barnstars aren't usually placed on article talkpages :) (edit) - unless it's intended for editors at large, in which case, ignore this! Kingsif (talk) 20:38, 17 August 2023 (UTC)

Correct page (Ivan Martynenko)
Good day, Paul Vaurie! Please help me better understand what exactly needs to be edited in the article about https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Martynenko_Ivan_Ivanovych_(1924). Am I correct in understanding that only the 'Biography' section needs to be edited, and the other sections can be left unchanged? Inna Ogiievska (talk) 09:15, 19 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Inna Ogiievska: One of the problems was the lack of inline citations. The bibliography also needs to be condensed and properly formatted. Paul Vaurie (talk) 15:37, 22 August 2023 (UTC)
- Oh, that's not a bibliography. You can probably delete the "The author's certificates and patents" section; see WP:INDISCRIMINATE. Paul Vaurie (talk) 15:39, 22 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Paul Vaurie "Thank you for the response. I will attempt to incorporate inline citations and reformat the bibliography." Inna Ogiievska (talk) 08:41, 24 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Paul Vaurie I would like to retain the section 'The author's certificates and patents,' as it showcases the scholarly contribution of Ivan Marytnenko. Of course, if feasible. Inna Ogiievska (talk) 08:43, 24 August 2023 (UTC)

Ivan Martynenko
@Paul Vaurie Good day! Could you please review the page prepared for publication with the revisions made, namely: I've rewritten the Biography section, added reliable sources, and removed "The author's certificates and patents' section." Inna Ogiievska (talk) 19:46, 28 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Inna Ogiievksa: Hello. It looks like it was already declined. I looked at the article, and there are not nearly enough reliable sources on the article. The research papers section also needs to go: see WP:INDISCRIMINATE. Paul Vaurie (talk) 20:55, 28 August 2023 (UTC)
- I removed stuff that shouldn't be on there. Just so you know, your draft is currently very far from the standards of a Wikipedia article. Paul Vaurie (talk) 20:58, 28 August 2023 (UTC)
"Former" in short descriptions
Hi there, Paul. I saw you added "former" to Fabrice Abriel's short description. Per WP:SDAVOID, time-specific adjectives should be avoided. I think "footballer" will be enough for readers to know they've found the right article. Kind regards, Robby.is.on (talk) 22:24, 28 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Robby.is.on: Alright, I agree that what I wrote was bit long. However, we musn't write "footballer", because he is also a professional manager. I would write "French football player and manager", for example. "footballer and manager" don't work together. Paul Vaurie (talk) 22:28, 28 August 2023 (UTC)
- Short descriptions are not about completeness or recency. He's known for being a footballer. We also use "footballer" for former footballers who have died even though they didn't play at the end of their life. Robby.is.on (talk) 22:31, 28 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Robby.is.on: I guess it depends on what part of his biography is more relevant. Paul Vaurie (talk) 22:34, 28 August 2023 (UTC)
- Indeed. I only just found out that Fleury women play in the top tier, I'd previously only been aware of the men's team which plays below the third tier. You can probably better assess how much coverage Abriel has received for his current role so I'll leave it for you to decide whether it should say "French footballer" or "French football manager". Robby.is.on (talk) 22:37, 28 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Robby.is.on: Ah yes, perhaps I should have mentioned that before. Fleury is pretty much the only women's team in the top flight that has a men's side below the second tier. I'm not 100% sure about the coverage, but my personal suggestion would be to put French football player and manager; but again, if you strongly stand against that, I won't oppose you. Paul Vaurie (talk) 22:40, 28 August 2023 (UTC)
- I don't feel that strongly but "French football player and manager (born 1979)" would be 46 characters instead of the recommended maximum of 40 which is why I've usually gone with either "footballer" or "football manager" for players turned managers. Robby.is.on (talk) 22:45, 28 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Robby.is.on: I see your point. However, I will argue WP:NORULES and favor the long one anyways. Paul Vaurie (talk) 22:47, 28 August 2023 (UTC)

Draftifications
Hello, Paul Vaurie,
According to User:JJMC89 bot/report/Draftifications/daily, over the past 24 hours, you draftified 31 articles. This seems like quite a lot when most editor patrolling do just a few daily. Remember, draftifying is just one tool and should not be the only tool at your disposal for dealing with subpar articles. For one thing, sometimes just tagging an article to highlight problems can be sufficient. Also, draftifying an article can be discouraging to new editors so it shouldn't be used for articles that are just not perfect but for articles that should be removed from main space. Please consider other options at your disposal when you come across articles that are just not quite adequate.
Thank you for all of your contributions. They are appreciated. Liz Read! Talk! 01:33, 30 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Liz: Hey Liz, thanks for the comment. I would like to clarify; I did not merely come across those newly-created articles. They were all created by one user, Dwanyewest, recently. The articles I draftified were either lacking any context or just not ready for mainspace, and sometimes not displaying notability. I looked through the editor's recent edits to find those articles, I was not specifically looking through Page Curation for those. Somebody at AfD told me that some of my nominations could have been straight draftifies, so I took it upon myself to draftify every article by this user that needed to be draftified, instead of nominating a few of them for AfD and bombarding the other ones with tags. Thanks for the heads up and I appreciate it. Paul Vaurie (talk) 01:55, 30 August 2023 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Kylian Mbappé
The article Kylian Mbappé you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Kylian Mbappé for comments about the article, and Talk:Kylian Mbappé/GA1 for the nomination. Well done! If the article has never appeared on the Main Page as a "Did you know" item, and has not appeared within the last year either as "Today's featured article", or as a bold link under "In the news" or in the "On this day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear at DYK. Credible sources for Lech Stanisław Laszkiewicz
Dear Paul Vaurie,
I am curently confused as per your comment on my wikipedia entry stating it lacks "Credible sources", the sources I have linked include: the Imperial War Museum, personell records, memoirs from British Caledonian staff, and a statement from the Radio Society of Great Britain. It would be greatly appreciated if you could explain as to what sources I have included aren't credible, and what I can do to successfully publish this article?

PSG Women
Hello Paul, hope you are doing good today. Saw few edits of yours related to kit numbers of few PSG women team players.
Just wanted you to know that several players have changed their kit numbers and new signing have already chosen their numbers as well. They have wore it in the recently concluded pre season tournament and the latest team photo shoot. You could find the same in the team's social media handles. Of course, those who maintain the official website aren't updated as usual xD. Kokoeist (talk) 08:12, 5 September 2023 (UTC)
- @Kokoeist: Hello Kokoeist... I see what you mean. However, I changed those as I am going by the official source... I think that we should keep it as such until PSG women play their first game or when they update it. That way we will know the official numbers. We need to be WP:VERIFIABLE. Thanks for writing this message. Paul Vaurie (talk) 00:46, 6 September 2023 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:N.V. Dash F.C. Inter Wanica players
A tag has been placed on Category:N.V. Dash F.C. Inter Wanica players indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.
Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.
Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.
Reminders:
- You can access live chat with patrollers on the New Page Patrol Discord.
- Consider adding the project discussion page to your watchlist.

Regarding Al Nassr
There are lot of club that use the name Al Nassr in the other country as well, and Al Nassr also managed other sport like Basketball and Volleyball under the same. It will be hard to differentiate which Al Nassr club it is if you remove the FC Dont believe me? Just look at Al Nassr instagram post there a post about woman volleyball team.
Also al nassr deserve its own history article separate from the main one Protocetus1 (talk) 04:59, 28 September 2023 (UTC)
Introduction to contentious topics
You have recently edited a page related to Armenia, Azerbaijan, or related conflicts, a topic designated as contentious. This standard message is designed as an introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.
A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.
Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:
- adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
- comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
- follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
- comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
- refrain from gaming the system.
Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.
Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.

2023 Ballon d'Or
Hi. I reverted your recents edits on the 2023 Ballon d'Or page. What you stated is incorrect, the award was given based on the results of the season instead of the calendar year, with the season starting on 1 August 2022 and ending 31 July 2023, and by the latter date, Messi, for example, had already started playing for Inter Miami, so do not change it back, please. Mazewaxie (talk • contribs) 08:53, 2 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Mazewaxie: I disagree with this but I'll let you do what you want. He was a PSG player during that season. Paul Vaurie (talk) 15:42, 2 November 2023 (UTC)
- Yeah, I'll argue that the time frame itself with the specific dates doesn't matter. Everyone knows what "2022–23 season" means, and it doesn't refer to the month that Messi spent in the "2023" season with Inter Miami. Paul Vaurie (talk) 15:44, 2 November 2023 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Xavi Simons
Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Xavi Simons you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Your GA nomination of Xavi Simons
The article Xavi Simons you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Xavi Simons for comments about the article, and Talk:Xavi Simons/GA1 for the nomination. Well done! If the article has never appeared on the Main Page as a "Did you know" item, and has not appeared within the last year either as "Today's featured article", or as a bold link under "In the news" or in the "On this day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear at DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On this day" column do not affect DYK eligibility. ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message
Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. Unblock
Paul Vaurie (block log • active blocks • global blocks • contribs • deleted contribs • filter log • creation log • change block settings • unblock • checkuser (log))
Request reason:
Hello. I can edit Wikipedia just fine from the computer I am currently using. However, on my phone, it says that two IP blocks are affecting my editing. These IPs are 2A09:BAC2:0:0:0:0:0:0/31, which has been blocked because "it is believed to be a web host provider or colocation provider" (block ends 2027), and 2A09:BAC3:0:0:0:0:0:0/33, which has been blocked because "it is an anonymizing proxy" (block ends 2026).
I'm an experienced editor in good standing, so I'd appreciate if my account could receive indefinite block exemptions for these IP addresses.
In general, every few months I have issues with my IP addresses getting blocked, and it gets on my nerves. Is there any way to make sure no IP block ever affects my account again?
Thank you. Paul Vaurie (talk) 06:14, 17 December 2023 (UTC)
Decline reason:
IPBE's are never(or close to it) granted indefinitely, usually a year at a time. Typically they need to be requested by emailing a checkuser(see WP:IPECPROXY) but you will need to show a need to have one, and since you say you can edit in places without proxies, that may be hard. 331dot (talk) 07:46, 17 December 2023 (UTC)
If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.
- @L235: Pinging since you made the blocks. Paul Vaurie (talk) 07:14, 17 December 2023 (UTC)
- The IP addresses you've listed correspond to iCloud Private Relay. Normally we don't grant IPBE for proxy blocks when the user has access to a non-proxy connection. I have made an exception in your case and granted you IPBE for one year. However, note that it will not be effective on other Wikimedia wikis, so a better solution may be to turn off iCloud Private Relay for Wikipedia. Best, KevinL (aka L235 · t · c) 21:19, 17 December 2023 (UTC)
Unblock request
Thanks for reviewing my unblock request. I understand indefinite is complicated. Could you please instead give me the one-year exemption if possible instead? Thanks. Paul Vaurie (talk) 07:48, 17 December 2023 (UTC)
- As I said, you need to(at least initially) email a checkuser as described at WP:IPECPROXY so they can evaluate your situation. It's my understanding that IPBEs are only granted when a need can be demonstrated, and your need seems limited as you say you can edit in places/with devices not subject to a block, but I'm not a checkuser, so they may know things I don't. 331dot (talk) 07:53, 17 December 2023 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Category:Surinamese expatriate sportspeople in Jamaica indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and removing the speedy deletion tag. Liz Read! Talk! 01:08, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
