Managing a conflict of interest

[edit]

Information icon Hello, RGMedia LA. We welcome your contributions to Wikipedia, but if you are affiliated with some of the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest or close connection to the subject.

All editors are required to comply with Wikipedia's neutral point of view content policy. People who are very close to a subject often have a distorted view of it, which may cause them to inadvertently edit in ways that make the article either too flattering or too disparaging. People with a close connection to a subject are not absolutely prohibited from editing about that subject, but they need to be especially careful about ensuring their edits are verified by reliable sources and writing with as little bias as possible.

If you are very close to a subject, here are some ways you can reduce the risk of problems:

  • Avoid or exercise great caution when editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with.
  • Avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).
  • Exercise great caution so that you do not accidentally breach Wikipedia's content policies.

Please familiarize yourself with relevant content policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies. Note that Wikipedia's terms of use require disclosure of your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation.

For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. Thank you. EvergreenFir (talk) Please {{re}} 17:14, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Warning icon Hello RGMedia LA, and welcome to Wikipedia. Your addition to Riza Aziz has had to be removed, as it appears to have added copyrighted material without permission from the copyright holder. While we appreciate your contributing to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from your sources to avoid copyright or plagiarism issues here.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and a cited source. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. (There is a college-level introduction to paraphrase, with examples, hosted by the Online Writing Lab of Purdue.) Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • Our primary policy on using copyrighted content is Wikipedia:Copyrights. You may also want to review Wikipedia:Copy-paste.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. However, there are steps that must be taken to verify that license before you do. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • In very rare cases (that is, for sources that are public domain or compatibly licensed), it may be possible to include greater portions of a source text. However, please seek help at the help desk before adding such content to the article. 99.9% of sources may not be added in this way, so it is necessary to seek confirmation first. If you do confirm that a source is public domain or compatibly licensed, you will still need to provide full attribution; see Wikipedia:Plagiarism for the steps you need to follow.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied without attribution. If you want to copy from another Wikipedia project or article, you can, but please follow the steps in Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. Drm310 (talk) 20:42, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]
Welcome to Wikipedia. Because we have a policy against usernames which give the impression that the account represents a group, organization or website, I have blocked this account; please take a moment to create a new account with a username that represents only yourself as an individual and which complies with our username policy.

You should also read our conflict of interest guideline and be aware that promotional editing is not acceptable regardless of the username you choose.

If your username does not represent a group, organization or website, you may appeal this username block by adding the text {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}} below this notice.

You may simply create a new account, but you may prefer to change your username to one that complies with our username policy, so that your past contributions are associated with your new username. If you would prefer to change your username, you may appeal this username block by adding the text {{unblock-un|new username|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}} below this notice. Thank you. Request reason:

I am not a group, organization or website. I simply chose the username RGMedia LA because it represents text that I use all the time. I would prefer not to use my personal name just as you don't. I have a last name that is so identifiable that I can't use it. I didn't want to use a 'fake' name because it may be someone else's name. I can certainly see why I was blocked, but I believe this explanation should suffice unblocking me. Best

Decline reason:

This username is definitely related to Red Granite, and therefore per our policy we can't allow you to edit under it. Also, you seem to have a conflict of interest around the area of your edits - do you realize that you can't continue making this kind of edits even if unblocked, with a different username? And no, we're not requesting you to edit under your real name, just under a username that represents you the person, not a company. Max Semenik (talk) 10:05, 7 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Request reason:

What kind of edits? I am a person editing these bio's...not an organization. How in the world would someone who has no knowledge of specific pages possibly know what to add to the bio's? It's impossible. I'm aware that you have to be very careful and be objective. I can assure you I am that. For example I need to change a number on one of the bio's, I may want to add an important announcement that no one else would know. I'm very serious and not here to just randomly edit Wikipedia bio's. There is no way that only people who do not know certain persons or companies on Wikipedia are writing the bio's. It's impossible. Please help me understand how I can work within your guidelines and make edits. I'm open to learning and making sure I don't violate any rules. I have an important edit that needs to go up on some pages ASAP and I'd like to handle swiftly. I appreciate your time.

Decline reason:

Firstly, you need to change your username to a name that is unconnected to any organisation or product, so for your next unblock request you should use the text:
{{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}}

Secondly, I am unconvinced that you should be editing articles where you have a significant conflict of interest. PhilKnight (talk) 21:38, 7 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

With all due respect who are you to be able to make the call if I'm affiliated or not? I am in the entertainment industry and I update bio's for a lot of people and companies. I live by a code of honesty and the utmost respect for rules within an organization. I do not work in a world of adding false information that doesn't add value. I appreciate the info concerning the username. I simply chose that username because I was making an edit for that particular person. If you take a look at the information on the page you will not it's a true to form bio with know falsehoods.

Decline reason:

Firstly, I agree that in connection with edits to Red Granite Pictures and its principals, your username strongly suggests that your account represents Red Granite. That's not acceptable; please choose another username. Secondly, content "that no one else would know" is unsuitable for Wikipedia; our content must be verifiable from reliable published sources (which your changes largely weren't). We're an encyclopedia, not a place for announcements. Huon (talk) 22:17, 7 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
