Copy-edit request removed

[edit]

Hi RadioactiveBoulevardier, welcome to Wikipedia and the Guild of Copy Editors (GOCE). I'm Baffle gab1978, a volunteer coordinator at the Guild. Unfortunately, I've removed your request for Agreement on settlement of political crisis in Ukraine from the GOCE Requests page here because we have a limit of two requests per editor at any one time. We enforce this rule to ensure all requests can be dealt with within a reasonable time. Feel free to re-add the request when at least one of your others has been dealt with. Thanks for your understanding. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 19:57, 2 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Please cite sources

[edit]

Hi, I added a reference to a reliable source for your edit to David Spiegel. In the future, please always cite your source when adding content to articles, particularly biographies of living people. Schazjmd (talk) 13:40, 11 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I tried to use an automatic citation from visual edit. Somehow it didn't work.
(I also tried to find a proper primary source document, but failed.) RadioactiveBoulevardier (talk) 22:20, 11 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
What you want are secondary sources.
For referencing, you may find User:Nick Moyes/Easier Referencing for Beginners helpful. Also, https://citer.toolforge.org/ is a useful tool, you just put in the URL or ISBN and it generates a citation for you. Schazjmd (talk) 22:29, 11 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Introduction to contentious topics

[edit]

You have recently edited a page related to post-1992 politics of the United States and closely related people, a topic designated as contentious. This standard message is designed as an introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially-designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

  • adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
  • comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
  • follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
  • comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
  • refrain from gaming the system.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

Also, I see you have a 'don't template me' banner, unfortunately CT is quite strict and the only way I can inform you is with a template. ––FormalDude (talk) 00:05, 18 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Peace dollar

[edit]

I noticed that you removed the Peace dollar from Template:US commemorative coinage (1920s). I've reverted your edit as it was a circulating commemorative. According to Q. David Bowers, it was designed to commemorate the end of WWI. While not a traditional US commemorative coin, the series of navboxes covers all US commemorative coins, including circulating coins such as the 50 State quarters, Presidential dollar coins, and Peace dollars. - ZLEA T\C 17:10, 3 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Short descriptions of musicals and plays

[edit]

Hi. Thanks for adding short descriptions. Please note that short descriptions of plays and musicals should not be identified by the year, since they can be revived over and over again, and the year of writing, publication and premiere can all be different. It is better to identify them by the authors: for example: "Musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein". Thanks! -- Ssilvers (talk) 23:24, 4 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, thanks for letting me know :) RadioactiveBoulevardier (talk) 23:46, 4 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Formatting date ranges in short descriptions

[edit]

Hello, thanks for tweaking short descriptions, like you did at the E. D. Nixon article. However, Wikipedia uses en dashes rather than hyphens in date ranges (e.g. 1899–1987). I notice from your edit tags that you're using iOS ... you can hold down the hyphen on your keyboard and you'll get a choice of which dash to use, as described at Wikipedia:How to make dashes § iOS and Android. It's not ultimately a huge deal ... the hyphens will be fixed in due course ... but it's worth being aware of. Graham87 14:40, 23 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I actually do most of my edits on desktop browser.
I agree that it's worth being aware of, and I suppose I must pay due homage to MoS, but especially in a short description (where every pixel matters) I don't think it's a big deal compared to RS concerns, weasel words, or malapropisms.
Rest assured that a collection of neurons will be organized into an interdepartmental committee to examine the issue in due course. I will also discuss the issue with a family member who does a lot of professional CE and is a stickler about en and em dashes. RadioactiveBoulevardier (talk) 20:31, 23 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Also, I just wanted to say thank you for making me think afresh about the inherently WP:POV (in an abstract philosophical sense) way I see the world. I now have deep questions about my own mental model of the world where previously there was only passing speculation.
Everything we perceive is really just circuitry in our brain that draws on outside signals and processes it in surprisingly nontrivial ways.
I've been good about en-dashes almost all of the time so far today. And tbh I'm still discovering all the different characters I can access on my keyboard (I also have RU and DE kbds). Don't tell anyone, but this is the first "real" smartphone I've ever had.

Nominations for the upcoming project coordinator election have opened. A team of up to ten coordinators will be elected for the next coordination year. The project coordinators are the designated points of contact for issues concerning the project, and are responsible for maintaining our internal structure and processes. They do not, however, have any authority over article content or editor conduct, or any other special powers. More information on being a coordinator is available here. If you are interested in running, please sign up here by 23:59 UTC on 14 September! Voting will commence on 15 September. CE template on Kinburn Spit

[edit]

Hello RadioactiveBoulevardier, I hope you're doing well. I see you added a CE template to the Kinburn Spit article. I appreciate your recent edits to the article, but what still needs copy editing exactly so I know how to fix the article? Thanks! Johnson524 (Talk!) 02:24, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I hope you're doing well too.
I think I caught most of the technical grammar/usage issues, but I think the cohesion, tone, or style could still use some polishing.
RadioactiveBoulevardier (talk) 02:47, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, thank you for the quick response! I'm really sorry, but I'm kind of a newbie at this 😅 I'm looking at the linked Wikipedia:Basic copyediting page, but it only talks about style specifically. Tone is pretty self-explanatory, but I'm having trouble seeing how to make the page more cohesive. Could you help explain this a little more? Sorry you bother you again, Johnson524 (Talk!) 04:02, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I may need a day or two to get back to you with a full answer, but the basic process is to scan the text for issues and fix them. There's a hierarchy of potential issues ranging in subtlety and complexity, from a really obvious spelling error to, say, layout issues.
This might help: https://www.wikihow.com/Copy-Edit
RadioactiveBoulevardier (talk) 04:22, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I appreciate the link. I'll see what I can do, but if you could keep the page on your watchlist that would be helpful. Cheers! Johnson524 (Talk!) 04:30, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Tartan

[edit]

Please do not significantly trim in that article. See talk page; it is being prepared for splitting into several articles, so it has some reduncancy and some drill-down detail in it on purpose.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  00:08, 4 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

PS: See also recent RfC'ed changes to MOS:DL. The new norm is to link once per section, so a lot of your delinking is not helpful.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  00:17, 4 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Please do not delete entire paragraphs of reliably sourced material without a consensus discussion. And please also do not remove HTML comments from articles that indicate things like what links to a particular section; they are there for a reason. And see MOS:REDLINK: red links have been found to be a driving force that encourages contributions ... Legitimate red links are titles to unfulfilled coverage of topics that do not violate "What Wikipedia is not" policy. Everything in that article that is redlinked is something that should be an article (i.e., is notable and for which there is sufficient reliable source coverage to write an article about it/them). If the {{crossreference}} template was meant for you to delete it willy-nilly, the template would not exist. And don't remove blue links to contextually important terms and probably unfamiliar places. Deleting all the links to the clan names was contextually just outright harmful. Frankly, very little of that editing pass you did was actually constructive.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  06:39, 4 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Restrictions for non-ECP users - Russo-Ukrainian War

[edit]

Answering your question here rather than at the TP since the discussion has otherwise died and there is no action at ANI (see here). The "rule" is per WP:GS/RUSUKR. Adding NATO support for Ukraine is not a project discussion that specifically excludes. However, WP:FORUM and personal attacks are disruptive and could reasonably be acted on. Cinderella157 (talk) 11:22, 17 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Got it, thanks. Why do people even care so much about a bloody infobox? RadioactiveBoulevardier (talk) 15:21, 17 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Buggered if I know. I can only think that they want to write the article in the infobox, which is precisely what we are told not to do. It would be so much easier if the article didn't have an infobox - at least until the dust settles. Regards Cinderella157 (talk) 22:40, 17 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I suppose you could nominate the template for deletion to see what happens. RadioactiveBoulevardier (talk) 01:14, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It is a thought, though it would probably need to be an RfC. It is presently a stand-alone template rather than Template:infobox military conflict. It has actually been nominated for deletion several times on the basis that it shouldn't be a standalone - which is a substantially different proposition from not using the infobox at all for the present. Cinderella157 (talk) 01:43, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, RadioactiveBoulevardier,

There is no requirement that sources for an article need to be in English so that is not a strong argument to make for deleting an article. It's easier for most editors if sources are in English and available to examine online but that is not a requirement for the sources to be considered reliable. It looks like this article will probably be deleted any way but I just wanted to point this out. Thank you for your work on the project. Liz Read! Talk! 17:42, 7 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Good to know, thanks!
But my argument was that notability hadn't been demonstrated through significant coverage in EN sources. Is it not a requirement for the significant coverage to be in English? RadioactiveBoulevardier (talk) 19:52, 7 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
