British redirects
Some (Britain and Northern Ireland & Great Britain and Northern Ireland) appear to come from confusion over the somewhat complex political structure of the region. There was previous discussion (Wikivoyage:Votes_for_deletion/August_2021#United_Kingdom_redirects) of deleting these, and I completely fail to understand why they were kept.
Others (British Islands and British and Irish Isles) seem to be leftovers from attempts to avoid using "British Isles" for the region. Lots of discussion, some at Wikivoyage:Votes_for_deletion/January_2009#British_Isles. In my view we obviously should have kept that name, but consensus was for a move to Britain and Ireland.
In my view all these -- Britain and Northern Ireland, Great Britain and Northern Ireland, British Islands and British and Irish Isles -- are useless clutter should go. None have links from other mainspace articles, none seem likely as search terms, & all will confuse searches for legitimate terms. Pashley (talk) 18:07, 11 September 2023 (UTC)
- Keep Over the period 01/09/2015 - 31/08/2023, these pages have had between 20 (British Islands) and 81 (Great Britain and Northern Ireland) page views. This is more than the 77 views for United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, which is the formal name of the country, as displayed on the cover of a passport. (As an aside United Kingdom has had 229,047 views, or 267,189 if you include all redirects.) AlasdairW (talk) 20:40, 11 September 2023 (UTC)
- Keep – I didn't consider views in the last discussion, but Alasdair has a point. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 21:40, 11 September 2023 (UTC)
- Delete. Fewer than 100 views in 8 years is negligible & unlike the formal name, there is no other reason to keep these. Pashley (talk) 14:24, 13 September 2023 (UTC)
- I would say Keep Great Britain and Northern Ireland and Britain and Northern Ireland as they seem fairly plausible, Delete British Islands and British and Irish Isles as I think they're less plausible. This isn't really a wiki for lots of redirects but I can understand some plausible redirects. Alextejthompson (Ping me or leave a message on my talk page) 13:22, 14 September 2023 (UTC)
- My feeling is, if this redirects aren't hurting anything, they should all be kept. Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:20, 14 September 2023 (UTC)
- I think they are hurting. e.g. If you type "British" in the search box, then (at least on my system) the bogus "British and Irish Isles" turns up on the drop-down menu & the correct "British Isles" does not. Pashley (talk) 01:18, 15 September 2023 (UTC)
- They both end up at the same page, so it's no biggie. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 07:32, 15 September 2023 (UTC)

- Quoting Nurg: "Are they needed? Probably not. Are they harmful? I don't think so. Are they weird or wacky? No." If British and Irish Isles is incorrect and confusing, let's delete that one (I have never heard it used). I am open to specific arguments about the rest (a quick check of the linked 2021 discussion didn't turn up real arguments for deleting), but otherwise keep. –LPfi (talk) 08:28, 15 September 2023 (UTC)
- Yeah, "British and Irish Isles" is weird, so I don't object if it seems better to delete that term. Ikan Kekek (talk) 03:10, 16 September 2023 (UTC)
- Keep Great Britain and Northern Ireland and Britain and Northern Ireland and delete British Islands and British and Irish Isles per Alextejthompson. --Comment by Selfie City (talk) (contributions) 21:43, 17 September 2023 (UTC)
Outcome: kept. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 05:34, 25 September 2023 (UTC)
