Mullathodi Gopalakrishnan Nair, professionally known as Kalamandalam Gopalakrishnan is a Kathakali artist, choreographer, cultural event co-ordinator/organizer. He is the director of his institution Kathakali School, situated in Cheruthuruthy.
Early Life
editKalamandalam Gopalakrishnan was born in 1967 at Bellikoth, Kanhangad in Kasargod District, Kerala.[1]. He is the son of the freedom fighter Sri. Puravankara Sankaran Nair and Radhamma. He is the grandson of the famous Malayalam writer and poet P. Kunhiraman Nair[1]
After he completed his school education, he moved to Kerala Kalamandalam to study Kathakali during which period he was selected for scholarship by the Department of Culture of the Governement of India.
Career
editHe is currently the Director of Kathakali School Society, situated in Cheruthuruthi, Kerala, a non-profit organisation he founded. Kathakali School Society has received the approval of the Govt. of India, in the form of salary grant for their staff.
In 2018, he was awarded with the Senior Fellowship in the field of Kathakali by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.[2].
Since 2016, Kathakali School has organized the National Kathakali Festival every year at Cheruthuruthy, Kerala. The festival encompasses Kathakali performances, lectures and discussions on the topic of Kathakali[3]
