This map image could be re-created using vector graphics as an SVG file. This has several advantages; see Commons:Media for cleanup for more information. If an SVG form of this image is available, please upload it and afterwards replace this template with
{{vector version available|new image name}} .
It is recommended to name the SVG file “Map (reconstructed) of the 1945 Clapp Report proposals for standardisation of Australia's railways.svg”—then the template Vector version available (or Vva) does not need the new image name parameter. |
This image was prepared for Wikimedia Commons to make information in the main map in Sir Harold Clapp’s 1945 Report into the Standardisation of Australia’s Rail Gauges (National Archives of Australia: series A5954, item 717/2) more accessible than in the very low-resolution, monochrome electronic image available as of 2020 (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Clapp_Report_1945.gif). Reconstruction was undertaken by placing the Report’s map on an outline of Australia’s coastline (not visible in that map); tracing routes where practicable (adjusting for distortions); and confirming or adjusting data points using accurate contemporary maps. Finally, the four categories of railway lines in the monochrome file were coloured, consistent with the published key reproduced above.
The original map in the Report may not have included Tasmania. Since Clapp was reported as saying that the Tasmanian railways were an isolated system that did not lend itself to conversion (Kalgoorlie Miner, 21 April 1945, p. 1), they have been annotated in the category “not recommended for conversion for the present”.
