DescriptionP2V-5 Neptunes of the Portuguese Air Force.jpg
A Lockheed P2V-5 (P-2E) Neptune of the Portuguese Air Force. Following negotiations between the governments of the Netherlands and Portugal, 12 Dutch P2V-5s were transferred to the Portuguese Air Force (serials 4701-4712). The P2V-5s replaced Lockheed PV-2 Harpoons of Esquadra de Reconhecirnento Maritime 61 (Maritime Reconnaissance Squadron) at Base Aerea No. 6 at Montijo, located near Lisbon. Contrary to the NATO charter, Portuguese P-2Es were used in combat operations during Portugal's colonial wars in Africa. In the late 1960s two P-2Es were assigned to BA 9 at Luanda (Angola), and carried out bombing missions and coastal patrols. Others operated from the island of Sao Tome during the Biafra war. At Portuguese Guinea-Bissau, BA 12 operated a pair of P-2Es in the bomber role. By 1977, only four P-2Es remained operational at BA 6, the remainder having been scrapped or stripped for parts. 4707 and 4711 were the last Neptunes that were finally withdrawn from service in 1978.
