Summary
DescriptionShurland - geograph.org.uk - 358957.jpg |
English: Shurland Shurland Hall has been swathed in scaffolding and plastic for at least 10 years but English Heritage have recently agreed a grant towards its preservation. The Tudor building which still exists was, apparently, the gatehouse to a fortified Manor house built for Thomas Cheyne, a favourite of Henry VIII. The King is said to have honeymooned here with Anne Boleyn.
The history of the site seems to go back much further. King Hoestan of Denmark arrived at Sheppey with 350 ships in 892 and in 893 built earthworks in the area, probably on the site of a previous Roman Fort. Roman tiles have been found embedded in vitrified cement in the masses of masonry on the site of Shurland Hall itself. Apart from the ruined gatehouse there is a long stone wall, presumably also Tudor, which is visible on the right of the picture. |
