Correct spelling: Ávila or Avila?

edit

Although the most common version of the name has an accent, the mathematician's name has not: see his homepage, or any of his papers, or his CV in the Brazilian Research Agency (CNPq). Boriaj (talk) 18:13, 16 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

You are correct. I already requested a WP:RM/TR on your behalf. --bender235 (talk) 15:04, 17 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
I see it has been changed back to Ávila again, apparently in this edit which does not give a reason. Recently the article name has also been changed. Can anybody shed light on the reasoning? -- Jitse Niesen (talk) 09:25, 22 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
Having received no answer, I am changing it back. -- Jitse Niesen (talk) 15:51, 27 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

@Jitse Niesen: Sorry, I do not access English Wiki everyday. Actually, in Portuguese ortography, all words with stress two syllabes before the last one have an accent: see wikt:lâmpada (lamp), wikt:árvore (tree), etc. The biography in Portuguese has an accent, too. Please see pt:Artur Ávila. Yanguas (talk) 20:43, 27 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

@Yanguas: It does not matter what the "correct" spelling in Portuguese orthography is; what matters is how the subject of the article chooses to spell his name. Whatever spelling he chooses must be respected. (E.g. we don't "correct" Barbra Streisand to "Barbara Streisand", even if "Barbara" is the more common spelling in English.) Is there any source that proves he chooses to spell this way? Yanguas (talk) 20:00, 29 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

French?

Where does it say he is French? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.176.95.225 (talk) 11:39, 13 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

I agree. We definitely need a citation as to whether he has French citizenship. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.197.91.136 (talk) 04:50, 15 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Useful source to expand page

edit

Don't have time to work on it myself, but noting a useful recent publication to expand this article: http://www.ozy.com/rising-stars/artur-vila-brazils-shining-math-star/61190 Martinp (talk) 16:12, 23 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Bad writing in the "biography" section.

edit

It seems to me that the "biography" section was a poor translation of the biography (Biografia) section of this article's Portuguese entry. I tried to fix the writing by rewording the sentences and using the Portuguese wikipedia article as a reference, but later noticed that much of the content here is redundant and already mentioned in other sections , such as the fact that Ávila solved the Ten Martini Conjecture, or that he became a directeur de recherches at the CNRS.

So, should the redundant information be deleted, and the section rewritten ( I changed the sentences very little, only rewriting to make them less confusing and ungrammatical) ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2804:7F4:3B80:E914:0:0:0:1 (talk) 05:24, 10 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

I didn't see it mentioned but is there a relation with his advisor? 2A02:1406:D:21FB:FC57:9B2E:EBDD:DCF2 (talk) 16:13, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
