Talk:List of battleships of the United States Navy

Change page name to "List of battleships of the United States Navy"

edit

I want to inquire what the community thinks about a move to "List of battleships of the United States Navy" to match the nomenclature of other articles of this type. Similar articles all seem to bear the word Navy in the title, such as List of aircraft carriers of the United States Navy, List of submarines of the United States Navy, and List of cruisers of the United States Navy to name a few; not to mention the corresponding articles about navies in other countries. It seems to me best to keep it consistent between all articles of this type. Thoughts? --Lenny Marks (talk) 08:44, 29 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Looking at the various "Lists of..." for types of USN ships listed in the List of United States Navy ships directory/template, it seems that with a few variations, the majority of the articles are titled as "List of X of the United States Navy", so I don't see moving this page to include the word "Navy" at the end as controversial. If anything, perhaps the few other outliers should be changed to the same format as well..? Anyway, as for this page;

This should have been discussed. If you look at ship lists outside the USN, almost all are in the format "list of X of [country]", and the USN format (also used in some RN lists) is in the minority. Differentiating by navy only makes sense if you had multiple navies of the same country to distinguish, but as there will be no List of battleships of the Continental Navy or List of battleships of the Confederate Navy (and arguably neither are the same country as the US), there's no need to be overly WP:PRECISE. Meh. Like I said, many of the other lists-by-type have "Navy" on the end as well and I don't believe that's a new development, so this didn't seem like it would be controversial or require a discussion. It's not a big deal to me either way, if you want to move it back, go ahead. - wolf 00:43, 30 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
