While Rutland claims to be the geographical center of Massachusetts, there is no evidence that this is true.
editA 1964 USGS publication places the geographic center in the "North Part of City of Worcester."[1]
An open source software project places the geographic center (centroid of the land border, center of mass/gravity) in an Audubon park in the Southern Worcester.[2]
- I don't agree with the methods used in that github link, there are more accurate ways to compute a centroid, but I do agree that there is no evidence of Rutland being the center. My own calculation puts it about 10 miles SE in downtown Worcester (-71.81253, 42.26029), but I didn't include ocean territory of Massachusetts so in reality the centroid should be even a bit further to the east.
