British subject

Andrew, In all(?) Carnegie Medal book articles and writer biographies, for 1967 to 2001(?), I wrote "by a British subject" because the prize was open to "British" writers in the sense that they were from British Commonwealth countries. After 2001(?) but not before, the criterion has been "British" books --by first or co-publication or nearly simultaneous publication (three months?).

Jennifer Donnelly (your diffs) was not a British subject (that remains unusual) and her book was British only by the nearly-simultaneous criterion (simultaneous or nearly so is now common).

The question marks mean that date 2001 is offhand recollection. And it was my design to use 'by a British subject' and 'British book' where applicable, with a pertinent distinct reference for 1967 to 2001?. And to cover every one of the Carnegie Medal book and writer articles (cat Carnegie Medal in Literature).

P.S. For all children's writers (and their books) acclaimed* as the first American, or first Brit, or etc, to win some award, I have designed to provide context --in this case re opening the award to foreign writers only recently. Similarly those writers who are acclaimed* first to win some award twice, or one of only three to win more than once, etc, --where context is whether the award was open to repeat winners, when.

Revise Guardian Prize to Carnegie Medal thruout. This pertains to the Greenaway Medal too, of course. --where again I covered all book articles and writer biographies that we have at EN.wiki (cat Kate Greenaway Medal) and intended to carry out the design described above.
It may be Guardian rather than Carnegie & Greenaway where I was able to document a crucial change in rules fully, and did put it in all relevant articles, or it may be an American award. Maybe I didn't execute the design completely for any award :--(
--P64 (talk) 00:12, 18 March 2014 (UTC)
Well remembered - it had completely slipped my mind that the Carnegie is now broader than just UK authors. However, I think "British subject" is problematic for a few reasons:
a) "British subjects" hasn't been the same as "British\Commonwealth citizens" for thirty years;
b) "subject" in the context of a literary prize seems a bit confusing, since it can make readers think it's about a British subject (topic). "British author" or "British and Commonwealth author" feels a bit more natural phrasing.
Given these, I'd think it's better to either gloss it as a British prize (which is factually correct) and let them follow the link for the fine detail, or (for pre-expansion) use "by a British author". Thoughts? Andrew Gray (talk) 20:06, 18 March 2014 (UTC)
No conclusive thought. I agree with (b) considering second-language readers, for 2013–20214 experience at DE.wiki teaches that I don't know how to read or write am, an, auf, bei, ... prepositions in the Weblinks section :–(
I agree that's it's better to gloss or use "British" writer or "British or Commonwealth". It appears to me at British subject#1949 to 1982 that 'Commonwealth citizen' has not been correct since 1982. But I don't know the history of the award (need a source or two) to make those calls even with perfect understanding of the history of citizenship/nationality/subjecthood law.
In book articles and writer biographies it may be best to gloss generally and add a Note where the origin of that year's winner makes it relevant, eg Ivan Southall and Josh (novel). As I did at Gail E. Haley, where it is yet more relevant because she is the Only Person to Win Both the Caldecott and Greenaway Medals!
(On another matter that you have noted, I gave Haley the lead wording "annual awards for children's book illustration from both the American and British librarians" without linking either association.)
--P64 (talk) 15:45, 19 March 2014 (UTC)

Gail E. Haley

P.S. At a glance I think Gail E. Haley must be the one who inspired me to ask a couple years ago about citing the Authorities, or even relying on the Authority control template display. The template display then linked to lccn.loc.gov, same target as the lazy editor's citation that I stuck in the References section. (Somewhere in talk space someone opined that we take for granted editors have used those sources.) In ignorance or impatience I quit there (Talk:Gail E. Haley#Library of Congress Catalog data); eventually returned to explain the two Medals but never cleaned up the use links.

WikiCup 2014 March newsletter

A quick update as we are half way through round two of this year's competition. WikiCup newcomer Smithsonian Institution  Godot13 (submissions) (Pool E) leads, having produced a massive set of featured pictures for Silver certificate (United States), an article also brought to featured list status. Former finalist Oh, better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly...  Adam Cuerden (submissions) (Pool G) is in second, which he owes mostly to his work with historical images, including a number of images from Urania's Mirror, an article also brought to good status. 2010 champion (Pool C) is third overall, thanks to contributions relating to naval history, including the newly featured Japanese battleship Nagato. Rhodesia  Cliftonian (submissions), who currently leads Pool A and is sixth overall, takes the title for the highest scoring individual article of the competition so far, with the top importance featured article Ian Smith.

With 26 people having already scored over 100 points, it is likely that well over 100 points will be needed to secure a place in round 3. Recent years have required 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) and 100 (2010). Remember that only 64 will progress to round 3 at the end of April. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page; if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck!
