Left justified images
editHi, I see you are removing images from the infobox. While I agree that including the image in the infobox makes the infobox look a little long, I am not sure left justifying the images and squeezing the text between the image and the infobox is an improvement. It may be worth seeing what other think. Cheers, Mattinbgn\talk 11:52, 20 January 2010 (UTC)
- WP:BOLD is a good policy to adopt—especially on articles about Australian country towns, where there is not a huge amount of interest. I am not particularly upset or bothered by the changes, I just have a personal dislike of squashed text. Others dislike long infoboxes without accompanying text. Different strokes, etc. I am certainly not wedded to any particular model and was genuinely interested in what others thought (or if anyone else really cared ...). Cheers, Mattinbgn\talk 11:08, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

editSomebody screwed up when the chose the hook. There was an ALT1 that was much better, and the ALT1 - not the hook that ran - was the one that was approved. But somebody grabbed the original hook anyway. Sigh! - The Bushranger Return fireFlank speed 21:01, 30 October 2010 (UTC)
Dorrigo Plateau
editUnfortunately no. If I had used a book it would definitely of been sourced. Since I am not that familiar with the subject I most probably used Google but wasn't sure enough if the source or sources were reliable enough but having found similar information elsewhere online, I assumed it would be ok to add the basic details without citations. It could of been this Dorrigo.com page or something similar. This article from the Sydney Morning Herald may be useful. Are you challenging the claims? - Shiftchange (talk) 03:55, 31 July 2011 (UTC)
Jug Tavern
editYour edits to the article were generally improvements. However*, I reverted your change to spaced en dashes. MOS:EMDASH says we can use either that or (what I prefer) unspaced em dashes to indicate an interruption, as long as we use them consistently within the article. Where there are two ways to do something (and no clear consensus on which way is better), such as whether to list categories alphabetically or in decreasing order of relevance, the rule is generally to respect the way the original editor did it. Daniel Case (talk) 14:12, 11 August 2011 (UTC)
- A word that I still like to avoid since it suggests a point of view more often than people realize.
I personally like spaced em dashes better, but the MOS says unspaced so that's what we use. Daniel Case (talk) 15:03, 13 August 2011 (UTC)

editHi, I was just wondering about your rationale for moving the image a little while ago. I don't have an issue with it per se, but I think that passage read more logically as it was, as one paragraph rather than two (quite short) ones. Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 08:22, 12 November 2011 (UTC)
Wikimedians to the Games
editHey. :) You're an Australian… so I thought I would ping you. :D Wikimedians to the Games is part of an effort to write the history of the Parlaympic Movement in Australia. (Your user page indicates you like Australian history…) The goal is to improve Australian Paralympic related content and two people will get an opportunity to fly to London for the 2012 Summer Paralympics and cover the Games for Wikinews, Wikipedia and Commons. :) If you're interested, please sign up. If you know anyone else who might be interested, that would also be fantastic. :D --LauraHale (talk) 11:24, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
List of expatriate Irish populations
editSorry for the late reply but if that article is about the Irish in the United Kingdom (full name: United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland), then the Northern Irish can fall into that category. Yes such a subject can be a political hot potato but technically – personal preferences aside – they are Irish geographically and British politically. People from the UK are British because it's easy for the government and everyone else to class us as that, rather than British and Northern Irish. VEOonefive 03:28, 18 June 2012 (UTC)

Google maps refs
editRe [1]: The best way to format Google maps references is to use the {{Google maps}} template (which is built off the cite map template). To get the proper url leading to search results, including for directions (which can be used to measure distances), click the link icon at the top-right of the search results pane. National Route, State Route
editHi Downsize43. Can I ask why, in edits such as [2], you are removing "National Route" and "State Route" from those route types in RJLs? - Evad37 [talk] 23:33, 10 July 2016 (UTC)
- The MOS says "route name or number or both". This is the form I have used in most of the RJL that I have done in the last 2 years, as it is less clutter and just as meaningful, especially when read in conjunction with Notes. All I was doing here was applying the same "standard" to some that I did years ago. Downsize43 (talk) 02:04, 11 July 2016 (UTC)
- That part of MOS:RJL doesn't mean stripping the route to the bare numerals – it's about giving both a route designation and a road name when a road has both, and the order in which they are given. The MOS does have provision for abbreviating route type (I- instead of Interstate), but not for ommiting route type entirely. And it's not really "just as meaningful", since you're loosing the distinction between route types – especially for readers with a screen-reader or images turned off, but also for readers not familiar with what the shapes and symbols mean. There was a whole discussion on text labels for icons at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Australian_Roads/Archive_1#Other_considerations which you may want to review - Evad37 [talk] 03:34, 11 July 2016 (UTC)
- No problem to revert recent changes. Fixing the rest may take a little longer. Downsize43 (talk) 04:32, 11 July 2016 (UTC)

Hi Downsize43,
A request for assistance please. I am about to begin a new article for the Thomson Developmental Road and have uploaded a map for it to Commons [3]. However, I have noticed that National Route 79 and State Route 14 which I have added to my map, no longer appear on the List of Roads in Queensland. Can you advise if these numbers are correct, and if not let me know what they should be, so that I can make the necessary amendments before I write the article. Also, if you have noticed any errors on my maps, please let me know as I will be more than happy to correct them.
regards Graham (in Cairns)

Surat Developmental Road
editHi John, I have begun a new article Surat Developmental Road, and I think I have it mostly correct. The Hema map I have been using dated 2007, shows the road differently at the eastern end, where it goes from Tara to Kogan instead of Tara to Kumbarilla. It was also numbered as State Route 71 on my map. Google maps and the Dept. of Transport and Main Roads show it as I have now depicted. Do you know when the change to State Route 87 and re-alignment occurred? Cheers, Graham Summerdrought (talk) 01:21, 17 January 2017 (UTC)
- No idea of earlier history or plans for this road. The article and map both look good to me. John Downsize43 (talk) 02:16, 17 January 2017 (UTC)
- Ok no worries, thank you John. Summerdrought (talk) 02:30, 17 January 2017 (UTC)
What was written about Dalby was actually correct, but you are right that Dalby is not on the Warwick line and the way it was written leads to the impression that it was. I've rewritten those first few paragraphs of the history in the hope it makes the story more coherent. I also got rid of the red herring about Brisbane Central railway station (which played no role in the events being discussed). If you have a moment, could you re-read those paras and see if that's a better explanation of events. Thanks Kerry (talk) 02:54, 10 June 2017 (UTC)
- Kerry, All good. While I have your attention, I am not comfortable with the phrase "built from 1873 to 1940s circa by John Petrie" in the lede (Petrie died in 1892). Care to rephrase it somehow? Downsize43 (talk) 03:32, 10 June 2017 (UTC)
- Good catch. Thanks Kerry (talk) 03:54, 10 June 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for putting that material into RJL format (something I can edit at a pinch but not create in the first place). Kerry (talk) 07:30, 14 June 2017 (UTC)
If you are keen to write about him, remember that pre-1955 newspaper articles are out of copyright so you can copy text directly from them that you can't copy from ADB which is a copyright source. I often use pre-1955 obituaries from newspapers as the initial basis for a biography. For Sellheim, here are a number of newspaper obituaries (but because of the use of the telegraph, many newspapers will carry more-or-less similar versions of the obituary). [4] Have fun! - Hi Kerry, Thanks for the encouragement. I may get around to it sometime, but don't hold your breath. Cheers, John Downsize43 (talk) 00:12, 7 July 2017 (UTC)
Scenic Highway (Queensland) between Yeppoon and Emu Park - do you know anything about it?
editI just stumbled on the Scenic Highway when writing about Mulambin, Queensland. It's in the Queensland Globe (published by the Qld Govt) so I assume it's official but it doesn't occur in Lists of Highways in Queensland etc. It's mentioned in List of road routes in Queensland but not linked anywhere. Any insights into this one? Kerry (talk) 07:23, 9 July 2017 (UTC)
- I know nothing about this road beyond what is in Google maps. Sorry. Downsize43 (talk) 21:49, 9 July 2017 (UTC)

Anzac Avenue
edit@Kerry Raymond: Hi Kerry, Thanks for your help on Anzac Avenue - I am learning all sorts of new things as I go along. You might like to see whether the two headings for “Plantings” are somehow avoidable without losing anything from the article. Cheers, John Downsize43 (talk) 23:43, 24 February 2018 (UTC)
- I have merged the planting sections. Kerry (talk) 00:03, 25 February 2018 (UTC)
- By the way, if by "new things" you meant Template:Clear, you have probably seen it many times before. It's usually written as {{-}} which is just a redirect to Clear. Kerry (talk) 00:08, 25 February 2018 (UTC)
- @Kerry Raymond: When I edit "Route" or "Major intersections" the "clear" template and the "Infobox historic site" details are displayed. Is this as expected? Downsize43 (talk) 00:41, 25 February 2018 (UTC)
- Well, it's harmless but I shifted the infobox after the History heading, so it should not appear when you do section editing. The clear has to be at the end of the Route/Major intersections because it is trying to keep the text and the right-hand boxes of that section together by delaying whatever follows. Kerry (talk) 01:05, 25 February 2018 (UTC)

Woondum, Queensland
edit@Kerry Raymond: Hi Kerry, The sleepy hollow of Woondum, Queensland is now on the map as the northern end of the M1 (Queensland). Would you be able to work your magic and kill the redlinks I have created. Many thanks, John Downsize43 (talk) 03:50, 17 March 2018 (UTC)
- A mystery - while DOT says the new intersection of M1 and Old Bruce Hwy is in Woondum the Google map says it is in Kybong. The Whereis map also shows the same.
- Problem solved. I have changed all occurrences of Woondum to Kybong. Cheers.
Downsize43 (talk) 04:02, 18 March 2018 (UTC)

Gillies Highway aka Gillies Range Road
editIf there is anything you can do for this new article, it would be appreciated. It is variously called Gillies Highway and Gillies Range Road, so I am unclear if it is an official highway or not. There were snippets about it in various articles which I have combined into this stub. Kerry (talk) 21:43, 18 March 2018 (UTC)
- @Kerry Raymond and Summerdrought:
Hi Kerry - done my bit for now. Hi Summerdrought - Would you be able to produce one of your excellent maps for Gillies Highway Cheers all, Downsize43 (talk) 04:39, 19 March 2018 (UTC)
- Great work! It looks like a "proper" road article now!
- Hi Downsize43, I have found a government publication that refers to the Gillies as the Gillies Range Road. Here is the link to Queensland State-controlled roads:[5] In the sub-heading Region Maps select North Queensland Region map. The road has the number 642 as its identifier. The locals here do refer to it as the Gillies Highway though. I will look into drawing a map for the article, give me a week or two. Cheers, Summerdrought (talk) 03:00, 20 March 2018 (UTC)

Far North Queensland
edit@Kerry Raymond: Hi Kerry, Following my booboo on Shire of Mareeba I have done some research on FNQ. Found some discrepancies but want to run them by you before I make any changes.
- In Far North Queensland the list of 25 LGA's (in text and in Infobox) contains 3 links to localities rather than Aboriginal Shires. These are: Hopevale, Lockhart River and Mappoon.
- The navbox Far North Queensland (see in Wooroonooran National Park for example) is missing 6 of the 25 LGA's. They are:Burke, Carpentaria, Croydon, Doomadgee, Etheridge and Mornington.
- Only a small number of towns are shown in the navbox, with many important centres missing.
I will make any changes you deem appropriate. On a related note the map of districts in Far North Queensland is missing Douglas, Mareeba and Torres.
Cheers, John Downsize43 (talk) 11:35, 22 March 2018 (UTC)
- Well, the links to localities is probably bccause for a long time we didn't have articles on most of the Aboriginal Shires until I made a push to get them all finished a couple of months ago. So they can go to the Aboriginal Shire articles now.
- Navbox Far North Queensland - I think you're right.
- Towns. Sigh. LGAs are easy, there is a well-known set of them with clearly identified boundaries. Whereas towns are somewhat rubbery. Some things are towns that you might think were suburbs. Some things are towns that you might think are abandoned. Some of the things you might think were towns turn out not to be. Etc. You might want to try to pick some criteria to decide what is in/out of the navbox when it comes to "towns." And don't ask about towns vs cities. That question has never been satisfactorily resolved in various forums. Don't expect to make everyone happy whatever you do when it comes to towns/cities.
- National parks in navboxes. There are a LOT of national parks (see Protected areas of Queensland) so if you are adding NPs, expect there to be a lot of them! Currently there are a random smatterings of NPs in those navboxes.
- Most/all? of our LGA maps are based on the 2008 maps drawn after the amalgamations, which is a problem for having maps for 4 LGAs that deamalgamated in 2014 and for the maps for the LGAs from which they were de-amalgamated. Maybe Summerdrought's skills extend to these kinds of maps?! Not sure that explains why Torres is missing (noting that there are the very easily confused Shire of Torres and the Torres Strait Island Region, a lot of people think they are the same, particularly when both get abbreviated to Torres! - @Dennis Bratland: Did you read my edit summary? How is my edit not constructive? Please explain why you believe the Motor Vehicle category should be removed. Downsize43 (talk) 01:35, 7 July 2018 (UTC)
- Did you go to Category:Motor vehicles and look? Do you see motor vehicles such as Food truck or International WorkStar or Ice cream van or Batmobile in Category:Motor vehicles? No? Why? Because Food truck and International WorkStar are in Category:Trucks or one of its sub-categories, and Ice cream van is in Category:Vans, which are sub-categories Category:Motor vehicles. Batmobile is in Category:Fictional automobiles, which is in Category:Automobile models, which is in Category:Automobiles, a sub-category of Category:Motor vehicles. The only article in Category:Motor vehicles is Motor vehicle. Everything else is sub-categories. If we put every motor vehicle in the top level motor vehicle category, there would be several thousand articles there, and navigating the category would be impossible.
See WP:Categorization for the guidelines. Sometimes categories are non-diffusing, for example, Category:African-American cinematographers, where we don't want to segregate anyone from Category:American cinematographers because of their race or gender or religion. We put the biography in both a top-level category and a sub-category. But we don't worry so much about RVs or The Batmobile, because they are not conscious beings with feelings and rights. See WP:DUPCAT for the guidelines. --Dennis Bratland (talk) 01:50, 7 July 2018 (UTC)

Categorization of user pages
editWith regard to these edits [6][7][8][9][10], please read and follow WP:USERNOCAT
... user subpages that are draft versions of articles should be kept out of content categories, ...
and Wikipedia:User pages#Categories, templates that add categories, and redirects
Do not put your userpage or subpages, including draft articles, into content categories.
Wikipedia:User pages#Categories, templates that add categories, and redirects suggests adding the leading colon - which is what I have been doing - so that category links are easily visible and clickable in the draft, without adding the page to the category. After the page is moved to article space, it can be easily added to the categories by removing the leading colon. (Obviously, if you prefer, you can disable the categorization with <!--
and -->
instead.)

Hello Downsize43 I have added projects Australia, Tasmania, Geography, to your article. You may wish to join them, check their to-do, and meet new people with interest in these topics. Cheers, --Gryllida (talk) 04:50, 5 December 2018 (UTC)
- @Gryllida, Thanks for that. Good to have access to help if needed. BTW the template {{WikiProject Tasmania}} appears not to exist. Downsize43 (talk) 06:12, 5 December 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks! I've resolved this now. It appears Tasmania is a subproject of Australia, and they are marked in a different way. Gryllida (talk) 06:23, 5 December 2018 (UTC)
- Please, oh please do not invent new combinations for places in tasmania... (we have already had serious issues with suburbs....)
- In all WP:AGF please revert yourself
- Geography project has nothing to do with locations in Tasmania...
- If you really do not understand the already well established precedents on other locations - have a look, please
- It is WikiProject Australia, Tasmania=y, Tasmania-importance=low, class=stub,importance=low
- you are creating totally a new precedent that in effect was in the past the subproject Australian places - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Australian_places
- I do hope you can have a closer look at other articles to see the potential issues of creating a new tag where are there none in Australia - except for the slightly quiet places project. JarrahTree 05:05, 9 December 2018 (UTC)
- @JarrahTree, It seems I have been sold a pup by User:Gryllida. I see you have begun to revert - thanks for that. I will wait a little while and then check that all are OK. Downsize43 (talk) 05:58, 9 December 2018 (UTC)
- Sorry. I am grateful for this explanation, and willing to fix whatever mess I made. A couple clarifications:
- 1) Is marking things with {{WikiProject Australia}} appropriate for placing it in the project assessment queue? (I don't have experience identifying classes, so I only add the project tag now, not the importance or class.)
- 2) Don't all locations -- say, 'Hobart Tasmania' -- belong to the geography wikiproject? Gryllida (talk) 08:20, 9 December 2018 (UTC)
- answering dowsize - apologies for making your talk page so messy
- answering gryllida
-
- (1) Not sure where to start - but project assessment requires more than just the template - needs class= and importance=
if you are not into or havent encountered it at all yet - go look at something like both sides of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Nullarbor,_South_Australia and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nullarbor,_South_Australia - if necessary open in edit, and have a look how it works. Then try the links to the various aspects of the assessment.
- (2) Not sure where you are coming from editing wise, but hell no. JarrahTree 10:17, 9 December 2018 (UTC)
- 1) It is hard for me to judge what is the class and importance. Often the drafts are incomplete. I think this is too difficult for me. Is this skill, if learned, applicable to an article of any topic (Australia, Nigeria, etc) or I would need to re-learn it for every new project which I am tagging the draft with?
- 2) (I edit for Australia, Food and Drink, Physics, Software. Have little experience with page creation.) OK, thanks.. time to check my geography marks and remove them where appropriate after reading the geography project page. I would not even imagine this is not the case. Gryllida (talk) 11:22, 9 December 2018 (UTC)

- Neither downsize or I are responsible for your perceptions, but if you continue on some merry way of misguiding others, you could well end up with sanctions... JarrahTree 14:07, 9 December 2018 (UTC)
- I'm willing to fix the geography mark placement, and correct Tasmania to Australia::Tasmania. The current question here is whether you would be okay with me not leaving an assessment with it. I am not aiming to create misguidings here, you see. Gryllida (talk) 19:12, 9 December 2018 (UTC)
- This seems to be the only article tagged with a subproject of project Australia so I think this is fixed now.
- Asked WikiProject Geography about the list of the pages which I tagged with Geography -- they will be able to advise me on the scope of their project.

- Oh no, it is not that project talk page task to ascertain that - look at the larger australian project - go to a sample of locations/towns - what is the general thing you find? JarrahTree 00:06, 10 December 2018 (UTC)
- I still am wondering whether marking pages without an assessment is appropriate. This remains an open question. Gryllida (talk) 19:35, 9 December 2018 (UTC)
- It is not an open question - yours perhaps - project wise - look at the articles already made - what is the pattern?
- Please understand there are in most cases precedents to follow, not so much as rules... assessment is totally up to the editor placing a tag - wikiproject australia - is as far as some people go, then some put wikiproject australia TAS=y class= importance=
its simply open to any
@Gryllida, FYI @JarrahTree, Following the example of others I have used template Tasmania-geo-stub in my articles. Is this OK or is there something else to use? Downsize43 (talk) 21:45, 9 December 2018 (UTC)

Have a safe and enjoyable christmas and new year. Thanks for helping the Tasmanian project in such a consistent and positive manner!! JarrahTree 06:01, 20 December 2018 (UTC)

Connection to Wikidata
edit@Boleyn: I am sending this to you because you have reviewed many of my articles and it seem that the user names shown in messages re connection to Wikidata are not “real” users (unable to ping them)
When I get a message that an article has been connected to Wikidata I expect to see a tag in the article providing access to the data. Why is this not so, and how do the tags in other articles come about? Assuming you can explain this to me the next question is: Why did user Jura1 attach a disambiguation page to Wikidata rather than an article? Cheers. Downsize43 (talk) 21:52, 31 December 2018 (UTC)

editPlace without a Postcard Prize | |
Great to see you working on articles for the Qld "places without a postcard". They need a little bit of love! Kerry (talk) 01:11, 6 May 2019 (UTC) |
- @Kerry Raymond: Prize much appreciated - even our deserts are beautiful. Just a raw random thought :) Might you be in a position, if you could find the time, to request/obtain/publish photographs from little bush schools that still exist? This thought was triggered by the small photo gallery on the Kioma State School site, particularly one of children holding lambs. Cheers, John. Downsize43 (talk) 06:09, 6 May 2019 (UTC)
- My past attempts at asking random people/organisations to release their photos under a suitable CC licence have been about 99% unsuccessful. But you don't have to ask Kioma State School. Go to their website and look at their Copyright link and you will see that it's CC-BY and there's no mention of any exceptions for photos (sometimes there are). If it's a Qld Govt website of any kind, it's always worth checking as the Qld Govt is trying to move to CC-BY where possible. In the case of state school websites though, I often don't find any useful photos of the school itself (which is the photo I am usually after), they tend to mostly be photos of groups of kids. But it can be worth looking at the photos on the front page and in the school newsletters, sometimes interesting things turn up (usually low-res though). Kerry (talk) 07:10, 6 May 2019 (UTC)
- @Kerry Raymond: As always you are a mine of useful information, but I think I’ll let this idea slide for a while. ): Cheers. Downsize43 (talk) 21:10, 6 May 2019 (UTC)

editHello Downsize43,
I wanted to let you know that I just tagged John Howe (Australian settler) for deletion, because it seems to be copied from another source, probably infringing copyright.
If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to rewrite it in your own words, you can contest this deletion, but don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.
You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Thanks!

@Theroadislong: I have added some more refs and some text.
I believe that the refs plus a bit of common sense establish notability, as follows:
- His ability was recognised and he was given an important job.
- He did not re-offend, and he impressed those in power with his work.
- He was selected to accompany Oxley because of his ability and good reputation.
- He impressed Oxley (who was a hard taskmaster) on their journey.
- His appointment to command the Hunter expedition came because of his previous performance.
- He continued on as long as he could after Singleton (who wanted to run his own expedition to get the likely rewards) had turned back.
- His discoveries towards the Hunter were of benefit to subsequent expeditions.
In summary, he worked to atone for his crime, did good work in trying circumstances, and put the completion of a task above personal ambition.
Regards Downsize43 (talk) 23:20, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
- None of which appears to satisfy WP:GNG I'm afraid. Theroadislong (talk) 08:49, 8 November 2019 (UTC)

- @JarrahTree: What precisely would you like me to include / exclude on talk pages for new articles on Tasmanian Localities? Downsize43 (talk) 06:07, 9 July 2020 (UTC)
- sorry - there were 2 things - I would have had preferred to have made an off wiki discussion about my possibly making very unguarded comments about articles for creation - however if you choose to leave that, no problems - no big deal
the other - no big deal - it was what I did on the city new categories - as I had edited. Not so much as asking you - it is what you would find on the items... if you choose not to, no big problem - many editors dont like to do anything on talk pages...
Your very steady and consistent improvement on localities and roads in Tasmania is what every project in Australia needs - unfussed, regular and positive persistent good work ! Thank you very much for that! JarrahTree 06:16, 9 July 2020 (UTC)

Issues with Template:Road infrastructure in Queensland
editHi Downsize43, I see you have some issues with my edits to Template:Road infrastructure in Queensland. I understand your issues with it being very clunky, ugly and needs improvement. I first made my edits to fall in line with similar templates for road routes around Australia. I think that it would be better if I made it similar to this page Template:Road infrastructure in Brisbane. Please tell me you thoughts on this proposal. Thanks in Advance. editHello Downsize43, I'm The Savannah Way, I just wanted to ask you if you could join WP:AUTR, a WikiProject that I have created all about Aussie Tourism. Currently, It's only me but I'm hoping you could join too. I noticed your contributions in List of road routes in Queensland and noticed that you have a lot of knowledge about Tourist Drives. The purpose of this project is to try and cover a range of Aussie Tourist Attractions including Tourist Drives. The main reason for tourist drives is that you can discuss the areas of the Tourist Drives and the roads it goes through in WP:AURD however, I propose in WP:AUTR can explain the history, attractions, lookouts etc. which AURD, you can't. This will also include some other significant articles like Jenolan Caves, Big Banana or Mount Gibraltar in Bowral.
So What do you think?

Infobox Australian place
editI just wanted to let you know that 10 articles that you have edited recently were added to Category:Australian place articles using missing parameters because you added a spurious pipe at the end of the infobox by ending the infobox with "|}}" instead of "}}". geography
editIs a very large and generic project - and there is no need for it in Tasmanian locality talk pages - if you start that, the issue of precedence means you would have to add it to all localities in Tasmania and that would run in contradiction to all other states in Australia that do not - there would have to be some very compelling reason to do that - and it would have to be explained very well where it is more than just a conversation between editors. JarrahTree 09:52, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
- Ok by me. Downsize43 (talk) 10:00, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
@JarrahTree: There are about 70 of these to be fixed. They are in my watchlist and I will start on them when I get a chance. The original text came from a randomly selected article not of my doing, so others are out there. Cheers, Downsize43 (talk) 23:15, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
- Oh dear which way are you interpreting my message? I am saying they are not needed, are you thinking I am saying add them? fixed? - the big problem with the Tasmanian project there are so few regular editors, once a quirky usage enters and is continued, there is literally no one else to check or view the issue(s) - the one known admin who lives in tas is erratic in presence and hasnt done an admin task for year(s). Just because Bartlett and Canley (originally from Hobart) have an interest, they are even rarer in presence.
- I hope for a lot of reasons you understand my message as being that geography is not needed on the items for tasmania.JarrahTree 23:22, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
- By Fixed I meant “remove the geography project”. If this is not required please say so. Downsize43 (talk) 23:28, 29 January 2021 (UTC)

All done!!! Downsize43 (talk) 02:00, 30 January 2021 (UTC)
- sorry for delay in thanks !!! - much appreciated.
Just in case you are wondering what is going on with destubbing - is, either the rater app that evaluates status of articles is saying it is start level - or there is already a talk page tag that says that it is a start level article ( In most cases thanks to your extensive hard work) - and there is still a stub tag on the page - so it is removed so as not to confuse anyone. Hope that is clearly expressed enough... JarrahTree 07:09, 6 February 2021 (UTC)
@JarrahTree: Are you saying that some process is removing Stub tags from articles if they are considered to be Start class? If so I will stop putting them in as I consider my articles not to be stubs. I only put them in because "somebody" long ago said I should. I recently read part of a great debate on Talk Pages where the majority view seemed to be that there was no need for any consistency between Class on Talk Page and the presence or absence of a Stub tag on the article, but I was unable to understand the logic of that view. Regards, Downsize43 (talk) 07:29, 6 February 2021 (UTC)
- Yup - if you delve into talk pages - you can almost get any point of view if you look hard enough.
There is a 'very convincing argument that leaving stub tags on the main space - and whatever is on the talk page doesnt have to match. Yup - it makes sense - if it ever encouraged readers to improve the article. But the inconsistency doesnt matter usually to people who dont touch talk pages and deal with the whole evaluation process.
I have never seen it in 15 years, maybe I havent looked.
However, maybe I will leave off removing the tags from main space/front page - for the moment, on the basis that - as I have said before - consistency for the whole island set of articles about places. Usually a quick glimpse at a page can be guessed at as being a stub - even if the ores software that rater connects with says 'start' - it gets to that by the measure of text, references and so on.. it can be very unreliable at times - a visual check of the page
is always better - very different from my sailing project tagging which is just adding tags rather than evaluating...
So the thing is with the articles that you have improved across the board, I think the larger portion are start level if you compare with similar for other states - and if they have council tags for stub level on the main space - maybe it is part of what I call the hidden maintenance issue for any australian articles - if they were created over x number of years ago - they need to be looked at to see if anything has happened to the article or the subject as to whether the talk page tag still fits..
Maybe, in a year or so (I have said some talk pages related to tasmania have that delay built in between posts) it will be worth reviewing the whole project level of maintenance and tagging, there is no rush, and many editors come and go - maybe then there might be worth a check of whether there has been any change (noticed or not noticed as parts of the oz project have various ways of changing) and maybe then, removal of stub tags might be part of that - there is never any clear indicator of the way to go. It is all by what turns up in the middle of the night unexpectedly, I dont know if I ever told you of the brilliant editor from elsewhere who was convinced that Tasmania was a country separate from Australia (I know, I have lived there, but that's another matter) - but wikipedia wise it was a great morning surprise to challenge and edit ! JarrahTree 07:46, 6 February 2021 (UTC)
@JarrahTree: Thanks for that. I will carry on as I have been for new articles I write, eg. Stub tag on the article and Start class on the Talk page. This is in accordance with my view that the articles are better than Stubs but still can benefit from contributions from other editors, including correction of any errors or omissions of mine. Cheers, Downsize43 (talk) 10:05, 6 February 2021 (UTC)
- However - the hydro/power station/dam issue has had long enough for input - rangasyd's work some years ago in most cases has not been touched by anyone else - and the talk page tags have been 'start' long enough - where stub tags exist, I am removing them - as the time lapsed between rangasyd's regional templates - and now is enough to consider the problem of the power station/dam/locality mix which is now over some years... will give a heads up as to the comments about that. probably the somnolent tasmania project talk page... JarrahTree 08:05, 8 February 2021 (UTC)
- Another item that has been noticed is the tendency for short descriptions to have town designations for places that are clearly localities - where you have placed in a lead sentence that a place is a 'town' but I cannot see anything in the article that verifies or clarifies such a status - I have not/will not changed it - however in most cases of the places that I know well (having lived and travelled in tassie) I have preference in the short to put 'locality' (specially when you put in the census stats and there are less than xxx number of peoples, specially) - technically the issue could be argued that when originally surveyed - that a lot of the former localities of the west coast had been surveyed with maps and governmental gazettal as 'townsites' that they are former townsites - I beg to differ and prefer to think in their current or recent form they are only localities.. Hope that makes sense, if not common sense to you... JarrahTree 07:09, 3 March 2021 (UTC)
- @JarrahTree: I have no knowledge of the source of short descriptions. I generally use only locality in the opening sentence, but may have occasionally used "locality and town" or similar. I use "town" for type in the infobox because "other" is meaningless. Likewise I use category "Towns in Tasmania" as the only realistic option, given its wide use by others before me. Cheers, Downsize43 (talk) 07:29, 3 March 2021 (UTC)
- thanks for answering - short descriptions sometimes get imported directly from wikidata -
- take for example - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sorell_Creek,_Tasmania
- the small text between the title of the article at the top of the article - you should see
- first line - class
- second line - number of revisions
- a space
- then the cluster of: -
- wikidata status - name, q number, and the description line from wikidata
- aliases (well worth going into edit in wikidata to offer 'former names' and 'aka's' - lack of akas is a major problem)
- short description - which has either edit - means already placed - but the option to edit
- short description - options to import as is from wikidata/ options to import and edit from wikidata/ not yet allocated
It is in a sense the responsibility of the editor - some import directly from wikidata and dont touch it. Then there are some amazingly weird short descriptions, however mostly self explanatory and there is also the option to override the extant description (and the edit summary shows this being done). As to info boxes with town as the only option is really weird, will ask around about that - it is a very unfortunate default. thanks for your reply - it is useful - hope my explanation might offer something of understanding the little lines above the lead sentence... JarrahTree 07:41, 3 March 2021 (UTC)
- My sincerest apologies - none of this is possible unless the gadget is turnedon in preferences gadgets short descrip - sorry JarrahTree 09:49, 3 March 2021 (UTC)

editToowoomba Bypass and the Warrego Highway
editHi! Am I right in thinking that with the opening of the Toowoomba Bypass, the Warrego Highway now officially takes that route and not through the inner suburbs of Toowoomba? Just for context, I am updating East Toowoomba, Queensland where it currently says the Warrego Highway passes through it, and I'm thinking I should say something along the lines of "Until the opening of the Toowoomba Bypass in September 2019, the Warrego Highway passed through the suburb.[some citation]". Since clearly there still is a major road corridor along the route of the old Warrego Highway through the suburb (although presumably less busy than it was), I think the Geography section should note this fact. But does that corridor have a name or number that I can name it (and ideally link to)? Obviously other Toowoomba suburbs may need similar updates but I thought I'd start with East Toowoomba since I am working on it at the moment. Thanks Kerry (talk) 21:41, 12 December 2021 (UTC)

The article Rocky Cape (disambiguation) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
This disambiguation page contains the primary topic and one other topic for the ambiguous title and no other topics can be found within a reasonable time.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
This bot DID NOT nominate any of your contributions for deletion; please refer to the history of each individual page for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 10:03, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
