Mfd/Template:user_Cabal

If the image is the problem, why delete the template? I could have just changed the image. Emdosis (talk) 02:08, 4 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Emdosis: If you wish, you can easily create a new template with a different image, which won't be sullied by the previous image in the history. Newyorkbrad (talk) 02:12, 4 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
If it's not too much to ask, could you send me the source code please? Emdosis (talk) 02:21, 4 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
I'm on my mobile now but I'll do it in the morning. Newyorkbrad (talk) 02:25, 4 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. Emdosis (talk) 02:53, 4 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Emdosis: Done. Newyorkbrad (talk) 12:44, 4 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Newyorkbrad, given your admission that no speedy deletion criterion applied and given the policy-based opposition to the deletion, your early MfD closure was more suited to being a vote in favour of deletion. Your referral to the template being sullied by the previous image in the history above seems to confirm that the issue was the image alone and I invite you to revert your MfD closure. Sdrqaz (talk) 08:11, 4 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Sdrqaz: Ordinarily the absence of an applicable CSD category would indeed make speedying something inappropriate. But applying that general rule inflexibly in this context would mean that no userspace material could ever be deleted without a week's worth of discussion—no matter how (inadvertently or intentionally) offensive or disruptive it might be—if posted by a user with other significant contributions. That cannot be right. Thus, there cannot be a categorical rule in this area, and discretion needs to be exercised, which is what I did, carefully explaining my rationale. Putting it a different way: keeping or restoring this userbox would mean that editors are free to use it on their userpages, a prospect that is disturbing and disruptive. In any event, the userbox-creator is willing to re-create the userbox with a different image (see discussion above), which should resolve any dispute; and I hope no one feels compelled to seek reopening or restoration merely as a test-case or free-speech hypothetical. Regards, Newyorkbrad (talk) 12:59, 4 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Brad, while the out-of-process speedy deletion is an issue, I think that the larger issue is your supervote over policy-based objection in a discussion.
I'm going to be frank here as you're doubtless aware of the policies and practices at play: as an administrator I recognise that my preferences do not override consensus and should not be imposed on others. Your position in the discussion is a noble one (even if I disagree with it), but it is a position that should have been expressed as a Community member instead of using your tools, especially given bedrock policy and the language used here (sullied) that suggests that you let your opinions on the matter cloud your administrative use. It isn't about free speech, but instead our responsibility to the Community as trusted members.
I really hope that you can revert your close so that I do not have to go to DRV. Yours, Sdrqaz (talk) 13:27, 4 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Since this is not an urgent situation, I'm going to leave this thread alone for awhile before responding to see if anyone else has any comments. Newyorkbrad (talk) 13:35, 4 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Sdrqaz: It's ok. My initial thought when I saw the image was, "I can't possibly use a KKK-looking image to depict an existent or even non-existent, cabal". But when I saw the W logo on the robes I thought: "Since the image is on the WikiCommons, has been there since 2008, and Wikimedia seems to be ok with it, then why should I be more prude (so to speak) then Wikipedia?" (it's not like I'm going to be putting it on any admin's user page). But I completely understand NewYorkBrad's reaction, and am ok with looking for another image. Emdosis (talk) 17:46, 4 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

I don't see how there's really a middle ground on a "humorous" user box that conflates Wikipedians with the Klan. A userbox with that image in its history would never not be controversial. Creating it that way in the first place was a serious mistake; taking it to DRV would reflect poor judgement. Mackensen (talk) 14:04, 4 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Yeah. At worst, this looks like a great application of IAR. Ed [talk] [OMT] 20:48, 4 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
I agree with NYB's speedy deletion and explanation, with Mackensen that taking this to DRV would reflect poor judgment, with Ed that this was a good use of IAR, and with Emdosis that "it's ok". Given that NYB has specifically said recreation without that image is acceptable, I fail to see one single benefit to anyone to undo the close, and sincerely hope that Sdrqaz rethinks his intention to go to DRV. -Floquenbeam (talk) 22:49, 4 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
