What is the relationship between the Auckland rugby league team and Auckland Rugby League? Is the former one of the several clubs which play in the Auckland area, or is it a representative team of players from all of those clubs? Please add a paragraph at the top of the Auckland rugby league team to explain this, and also link to the article from within a sentence of Auckland Rugby League.-gadfium 22:53, 15 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of CBMass

edit

A tag has been placed on CBMass requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a band or musician, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for musical topics. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Unreferenced BLPs

edit

Hello Yamis! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 389 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the article:

Proposed deletion of Waitakere Cricket Club

edit

The article Waitakere Cricket Club has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No indication of how this might meet notability guidelines. Lacks citations to significant coverage in reliable sources.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. RadioFan (talk) 12:50, 12 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

well, it's club that has had NZ cricket representives so I guess it's insignificant. I mean cricket is insignificant right? Only 1 billion fans in India. I expect that most of the 1 billion Indian cricket fans knows of Adam Parore. Unless the person deleting it has a clue about cricket then ... huh?

Changing citations

edit

You might not have been aware, but please be careful when updating citations using named references, e.g. <ref name="name">content</ref>, as you did with your April 2017 edit at NBA salary cap. While your new reference might have been relevant for that specific sentence, it incorrectly changed the citation for all other places that reused "<ref name=cbafaq>" I went ahead and fixed it here. Ways to improve 1910 Auckland Rugby League season

edit

Hello, Yamis,

Thanks for creating 1910 Auckland Rugby League season! I edit here too, under the username Path slopu and it's nice to meet you :-)

I wanted to let you know that I have tagged the page as having some issues to fix, as a part of our page curation process and note that:-

Please try to fix the issues mentioned in the article.

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|Path slopu}}. And, don't forget to sign your reply with ~~~~ .

Hi Path slopu, I'm not sure how to do messages so hope it works. There are Auckland Rugby League season pages from the past decade such as 2010, but I am going back to the origins of the league. Will build references as I go. Am trawling old archived newspapers, namely NZ Herald and Auckland Star for scores and articles. Cheers~~~~

Auckland Rugby

edit

I have noticed that you are working hard on articles about rugby in Auckland. Unfortunately, with that you also create a lot of links to disambiguation pages. Could it be an option that you add some code to your "custom CSS"? (preferences >> appearance >> custom css)

The code I suggest is:

.mw-disambig { background-color:#AFEEEE; }

Effect of this code is that links to disambiguation pages get a blue background, making them easier to spot and solve. The Banner talk 10:11, 30 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi User:The Banner, I'm not an expert wikipedia user so I try to keep it pretty simple and use templates. Can you give me examples of the disambiguation pages I have got wrong (so I can fix them) because I am doing my best to link to relevant pages. For the most part the pages I am linking to are correct.

In 1922 Auckland Rugby League season you have link to "Athletics" instead of to Athletics Rugby League Club and you also linked to "Fire Brigade" (the guys who extinguish fires) instead of to link to Fire Brigade Rugby League Club. The Banner talk 12:12, 30 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

References in new articles

edit

Hi Yamis - I see you've been creating a few new articles (thank you!). One minor thing though - can you please put the references after any punctuation, not before? For example, you've been writing:

Joe Bloggs scored a try for Waikato in this match [1].

That should really be like this:

Joe Bloggs scored a try for Waikato in this match.[1]

As I said, it's just a minor thing, but it saves someone the trouble of having to tidy them up afterwards. Other than that, keep up the good work! :) Grutness...wha? 14:29, 17 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi Grutness, I will take that on board and try to do that from now on. I've done it wrong about 2,000 times by now I guess. Yikes! I will correct them as I periodically go back into the pages I created already. cheers

Well, that particular error is easily fixed using AutoWikiBrowser. I'll run your articles through it. What AWB doesn't fix is incorrect capitalisation; Wikipedia uses sentence case for headings (and yes, "rugby league" is supposed to be in lower case). Would be great if you could remember that. Keep up your good work. Schwede66 09:03, 19 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Done. Didn't take long, did it? Schwede66 09:22, 19 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Thank you. Some of the stuff I have done in the last day or two I have done it the way suggested. Also adjusting some other suggested things, and currently editing a page to add more links to wiki pages. I'm getting the hang of it! - mind you I always do that last thing as much as possible. Just didn't do it for one particular page enough.

AWB run

edit

Kia ora Yamis, I'm making your watchlist go into overdrive by doing an AutoWikiBrowser run of articles that you have created. Thanks for using citation templates; the way you've set them up, my AWB setup converts "volume" and "issue" numbers into citation parameters. If you spot anything that does not look right afterwards, let me know and I'll go back and fix it (which should be easy to do as your formatting is so consistent). Good work all around; your work is most valuable. Schwede66 20:28, 22 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Done. Here are a few things that I've noticed; all rather minor issues:
  • The lead of a bio should start like this: Full name in bold face (date of birth – date of death) was ...
  • The dmy date format is dd mmmm yyyy; you sometimes put a comma after the month (which is incorrect)
  • Use NZ English for those articles, e.g. "travelled" (with two "L")
  • Sentence case for headings
I take it you are based in Auckland. Are you aware of the upcoming WikiConference in Auckland? Might be fun to meet up with other editors. I went to the first one in Hokitika and it was a superb weekend. Schwede66 21:02, 22 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Autopatrolled

edit

Hi Yamis, I just wanted to let you know that I have added the "autopatrolled" permission to your account, as you have created numerous, valid articles. This feature will have no effect on your editing, and is simply intended to reduce the workload on new page patrollers. For more information on the autopatrolled right, see Wikipedia:Autopatrolled. However, you should consider adding relevant wikiproject talk-page templates, stub-tags and categories to new articles that you create if you aren't already in the habit of doing so, since your articles will no longer be systematically checked by other editors (User:Evad37/rater and User:SD0001/StubSorter.js are useful scripts which can help). Feel free to leave me a message if you have any questions. Happy editing! Schwede66 21:05, 22 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

How do you add images to pages? I have added a tiny number but in NZ copyright is 50 years so I can use anything from the online newspapers. And I can't work out how to do it properly. cheers - Jamie Yamis (talk) 14:25, 5 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Well, copyright is a lot more complex than "50 years". For a start, this applies to the copyright holder, and that may either be the newspaper or the photographer. If the latter, you need to be sure that the person has been dead for 50 years. If you don't know who holds the copyright, you need to assume worst-case-scenario (say the photographer) and if you don't know who the photographer was, you need to have a very old photo before you can safely conclude that it's out of copyright; something a lot older than 50 years (for example, somebody may live another 80 years after they take a photo plus the 50 years for copyright expiry and you are at 1891).
But if you do have a photo that is good to go, upload it to Wikimedia Commons and once it's there, it depends where you want to add the photo. There are different ways to do it depending on whether it's somewhere in the text (Commons gives you a link to click, you copy some code, and paste that into the position where you want the photo to appear) or in an infobox, say (in an infobox, you usually paste the photo's file name). Help:Pictures has detailed instructions. If you have uploaded a photo and get stuck, please feel free to ask. Schwede66 00:24, 6 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. I have seen a template regarding NZ copyright laws? But have been unable to locate it when trying to upload photos. An example is Joe Sayegh's wikipage. The photo is scanned from the NZ Herald 1937. None of the photos are ever credited in those years. Yamis (talk) 01:57, 6 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
When you click on the photo, you get to where it's hosted on Commons, and the copyright template is attached. If somebody put up the photo for deletion, it most likely would not survive as I explained above. Unless someone can proof that the copyright rested with the newspaper, which is a challenging test (as the default is that copyright rests with the photographer; however, they Herald may have had a legal agreement that transferred copyright to them).
If you want to use that template when uploading to Commons through the Upload Wizard, on the second page, you get the choice of radio buttons. Click "This file is not my own work" and the page for sourcing information displays. Ah, thanks again. At some point I might try and find out whether the New Zealand Herald and Auckland Star own the rights to their photographs or not. I read recently that The Press is going to be scanned and put online at Papers Past right up until 1991 over the next 18 months and then the Auckland Star will follow immediately afterwards. Somebody told me a while ago that an American had bought the rights to the Herald archives but not sure if that is true or not. Yamis (talk) 02:59, 6 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Some years ago, The Press sold its photo archive, including the glass plates, to an American organisation. Schwede66 00:06, 7 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

2023 Auckland Rugby League season

edit

Hi Yamis,

First of all, as a fellow rugby league mad editor, I love the detail you have put into the article.

I'm just concerned at its length and excessive descriptiveness. Maybe try taking a few of the big text chunks out, just to improve readability.

Kind regards

Talsta (talk) 03:09, 25 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi Talsta, cheers. I don't think it is over the top as it is essentially the only source of information on the season going forward. None of the games are being documented anywhere. There are no programs being written, no annuals being written. And the ARL website barely covers any of the games. If it isn't recorded there it isn't recorded anywhere. And anybody wanting to look back on the seasons to get information will no doubt appreciate a little bit more than not much at all in my informed opinion. I haven't had any negative feedback from the RL community, only wikimods tbh. Next year I might trim back a bit on game comments but anything else in there is just important information.

William Devanney Stormont

edit

Hi I believe you are the author of the Brisbane University entries in the Bill Stormont page. William Devanney Stormont was my grandfather. I would like to know where the pictures of my grandfather came from and how you identified him in the two photos?

According to Marist Memories(page 12) he played in two of those three games in the last fortnight in June 1922 and that the last one of them was v Australian Universities. I have very few photos of my grandfather, a photgraph of his wedding photo and a few scans of him and his brothers playing for Marist in Marist Memories.

https://animated.stormland.tv/20170330_225220.jpg

https://animated.stormland.tv/MaristMemories.pdf

From these photos I thought William Devanney Stormont was the man second from the left in this 1924 film https://www.ngataonga.org.nz/search-use-collection/search/F5716/

It would make him the second from left in the 1924 photo Auckland V England that the Nga Taonga Tarr film shows. But it seems you have identified him as the chap on the end and I would like to know how. Lukraun (talk) 08:12, 17 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi Lukraun. I have researched all the seasons from 1908 to 1945 to write wikipages and have lots of additional records that I have pieced together. The player second from the left is unmistakably Craddock Dufty. He was an absolute legend of that time. He was the Kiwi fullback for many years. Most of the photos I have are from newspapers of the time. Using the papers past website to find them and upload them. My email is jm76nz@yahoo.com if you want to reach me that way and I might be able to give you some more information on your grand father. Yamis (talk) 08:32, 17 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
