Interpreting the pronunciation spelling "ufruf" in the Forward

edit

@-sche, in response to your talk page question about pronunciation, the Philologos column in the Forward gives variable pronunciations, but I'm not sure exactly how to interpret the pronunciation spelling used.

However it is pronounced (we’ll get to that in a minute), an “oof-,” “owf-” or “oyf-ruf” is, for those of you unfamiliar with it, a Jewish custom […]

“Ufruf” is definitely the most frequently encountered form of the word, and other regional pronunciations are perfectly acceptable too.

I based the IPA pronunciation off my sibling's pronunciation of the word and their affirmation that that is how they hear it pronounced by others. My sibling lives in New Jersey, is active in the local Jewish community (as opposed to me, who doesn't get out much at all), and does not speak Yiddish.
