Tschechei
German
editEtymology
editPossibly derived from Tscheche + -ei in analogy to terms like Lombardei, Slowakei, Türkei or as back-formation from Tschechoslowakei
Pronunciation
editProper noun
editdie Tschechei f (proper noun, usually definite, definite genitive der Tschechei)
- (dated) Czech Republic (a country in Central Europe)
- Synonyms: (common) Tschechien, (officialese) Tschechische Republik, (historical) Böhmen und Mähren
Usage notes
edit- Now usually avoided and considered dismissive because of associations with the Sudeten crisis and the Protectorate, particularly with the Nazi propaganda term Rest-Tschechei. However, in some of the regions bordering on the Czech Republic it may still be usual as a vernacular form.
