Fluorescence-microscopy image of bacterial biosensor cells doped into a population of surface-attached P. aeruginosa. Only biosensor cells are shown. Precise alkyl-quinolone quantification enabled the authors to show that attachment of P. aeruginosa to biotic and abiotic surfaces stimulates the production of cytotoxic alkyl-quinolones, which become more potent when packaged and delivered to host cells in secreted outer-membrane vesicles.
