Helloǃ I mostly edit as a volunteer on Wikipedia, but more recently have undertaken some paid Wikimedian work for both the National Trust and for Leeds 2023. I've been undertaking a small amount of Wikidata work as part of both. For Leeds 2023, some of that work was under User:Lajmmoore (L23 WIR).

Smell on Wikidata

edit

In early 2024 I became interested in how sense of smell can be represented in linked open data. This began at a workshop in York in January with museum professionals, who were discussing how the smell/s of objects can be represented in collections management systems. My response to the question was to look at what Wikidata was doing. Rather than naming individual smells e.g. smell of roses (which is an item), this question draws comparison e.g. smells like (which is a property). In early 2024 the only way to describe this relationality of smell was through the proporty perfume note. While this is definitely a useful way to describe some smell-related data, it didn't feel broad enough to cover the the wider range of cultural and scientific smell-related possibilities. I opened a property proposal and there was some great discussion: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Property_proposal/smells_of
