Abstract
Determination of the amt. of analyte (A) in a sample, where (A) is one of a pair of specific bindable substances, and one member of the pair is insolubilised, uses as detectant (D) one member of the pair giving a measureable signal proportion to the number of molecules of (D) present. The improvement is that first a soln. or (A) is drawn, by syringe, into an open-ended tip, detachably mounted on the syringe, which contains the insolubilised component. (where (A) can be bound to the tip it may be the insolubilised component). A soln. of (D), and other reagents or wash solns. is supplied to the tip (from an outside source or from the syringe), then the solns. removed from the tip by the syringe. The amt. of (D) insolubilised in, or remove from, the tip is then measured to determine the amt. of (A). Process is esp. for immunoassay procedures such as radioimmunoassay (RIA), immunoradiometric assay (IRMA) or 2-site IRMA. The system requires minimal supervision and avoids fluctuating conditions.
