Abstract

1341032 Personal sanitary appliances I P CROWLEY 19 April 1971 [20 March 1970] 13703/70 Heading A5R A personal sanitary appliance for incontinent females (shown in situ in a wearer) comprises a first portion 11 for insertion in the vagina and having an aperture 16 for receiving secretion from the uterus 28, and a second, vestibular portion 12 having an aperture 18 for receiving fluid from the urethra 32, both apertures communicating with an outflow passage 22 which in turn communicates with a chamber 23 having an outlet 24 which outlet is provided with a one way valve 25 comprising two plastics sheets 26 fixed at one of their edges on the outside of the chamber 23 about the aperture 24, the sheets being adapted to close the aperture 24 by engagement of their adacent faces, and a receptacle 29 attached, about the valve 25, to the chamber 23. In use, the portions 11, 12 are inserted and clamps (not shown) are placed on the passage 22. The chamber 23 is partially filled with a liquid antiseptic (35), Fig. 4 (not shown) and attached, together with the receptacle 29, to the passage 22, which is then unclamped and the chamber and tubing are allowed to hang vertically. The sheets 26 of the valve 25 are forced open by excess fluid pressure and fluid passes into the receptacle 29 until the pressures on the valve 25 are equalised whereupon the valve closes thereby retaining some fluid in the chamber 23 as shown, this process being repeated on subsequent passing of fluid by the patient, a sub-atmospheric pressure being permanently established at the apertures 16, 18 causing a fluid-tight seal between the appliance and the tissues. The appliance is preferably of a suitable plastics material and screens 21, permeable to fluid preferably cover the apertures 16, 18.
