Abstract

1356386 Incision tool NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 26 May 1971 [3 June 1970] 26893/70 Heading A5R A tool for providing incision into a tissue wall comprises an elongated member 1 having a tapered end 2 at which is provided a sharp edge 14 on the end of a rod 13 for making the incision, a tubular member 5 within which said elongated member 1 is removably located, the end 7 of the tubular member tapered to meet the tapes of the elongated member, and clamping means 8, 9 to secure the edge of the incision to the outer surface of the tubular member. During use, the sleeve 9 of the preferred embodiment is held back against spring 10 by the catch 12 from the shoulder 8, the aperture 4 being held against the tissue wall with the blade 14 withdrawn. An incision is made by depression of the plunger 15 and the tool moved into the incision until the edges of the latter curve over shoulder 8. Sleeve 9 is then released to clamp the edges of the incision between the sleeve 9 and shoulder 8, the stop 20 preventing the tool from being pushed too far into the incision. Then, member 1 and rod 13 are unscrewed from the tubular member 5 whereupon valve 17 automatically closes the bore member 5 as the parts are withdrawn, to minimise the loss of blood from the incised organ. A probe or catheter may then be passed down the bore of member 5 after opening the valve 17.
