Abstract

1390575 Supply circuits for X-ray tubes FIELD EMISSION CORP 7 June 1973 [26 June 1972] 27246/73 Heading H2H [Also in Divisions H1 and H5] Pulsed X-ray apparatus comprises an X-ray tube 10 including an evacuated envelope 20 containing a field emission cathode 14 and an anode 12 which emits X-rays, a high voltage pulse generator 34 and an exposure control 44 which enables the pulse generator to supply to the anode a train of pulses 42 having a peak voltage of at least 250 kilovolts. The generator 34, which may be a Marx surge or Blumlein field reversal generator, is supplied by a 15 kilovolt D.C. source 36 and is triggered by an oscillator 40. The total exposure time is determined by a potentiometer 46 and the pulse repetition rate is determined by a potentiometer 40. The pulses preferably have a peak voltage of 350 kilovolts, a width of 30 nanoseconds and a repetition rate of 1000 pulses per second. The relatively high peak voltage increases the penetration depth of the electrons in the anode thereby reducing the anode temperature to enable bombardment of the anode with high energy electrons without melting the anode.
