DEVICE FOR SHUFFLING AND DISTRIBUTING CARDS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed January 23, 1912. Serial No. 672,925.
gravity etween those in the receptacle, and
l5 the cards are delivered from the receptacle by manually aiming it toward the place in 21o to provide a device which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and one which is adapted to quickly distribute the cards.
Further objects of my invention are to 25 so provide means for the shuttling and distribution of the cards, that the possibility of fraud and the undesirable soiling of the cards by moisture of the hands in dealing, is avoided.
In the drawings, forming a art of this specification: Figure 1 is a si e elevation of a device constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig.3 is an end elevation'o'f the same. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of a modified form of device embodyingmy invention'. Fig. 5 is a top plan view of one of the details of the device as disclosed in Fig. l. Fig.6 is a perspective view of the card 40 receptacle and appertaining parts thereof.
Similar characters refer tosimilar parts throughout the views. With particular reference to Figs. 1, 2 and 8, a designates a box-like receptacle for the cards, open at the top and one end and adapted to. be grasped in the hand of the manipulator. Adjacent the upper margin of the closed. end of the receptacle, and projecting forwardly therefrom, I pivot an oscillatable arm g, having upturned portions 9' which conveniently form bearings for a spindle d", fluted longitudinally as at e, exteriorly of thebearings g. This spindle cl carries, keyed thereto in any suitable manper, a wheel 6 intermediate the bearingsg,
and this wheel is preferably provided with a peripheral covering 0 of such material as rubber, as having a high co-efiicient of friction, so as to impart its movementto the cards, in the desired manner. The spindle d is so disposed with respect to the arm 9 as to position the wheel I) to tangentially engage the top card of the pack contained in the receptacle a, adjacent its margin at the open end of the receptacle. 'The spindle d carries with it, a finger f which limits' oscillation of the spindle and positionsthe I cards for successful operation by'the wheel Z7. This finger f projects beyond the peripheryof the wheel 6 and its covering 0', and
. is disposed preferably to one side next adjacent the wheel I). When the wheel is turned, in one direction, say forwardly, by the spindle 6", this finger f ultimately engages the front of the ends of the cards forming the pack, and brings their margins into alinement. When the wheel is turned rearwardly, that is, in a contraclockwise direction as viewed in Fig. 1, the upper card is advanced and the finger f engages the arm 9 to prevent further actuation of the wheel 6 to advance more than one card. Oscillation, of the wheel 6 successively advances the top card. ,If desired, the thumb of the hand grasping the receptacle a may be placed on the arm a to give slight pressure thereupon when a vancing the cards and relieving the same when returning the wheel for another advance.
In the device as disclosed in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, a receptacle a for the cards is provided,
having an open end and open top. Adjacent the upper margin of the closed end on of the receptacle, I pivotally mount, as at Z,
an arm member is provided with downwardly extending guide means is, spaced apart from each other, and an aperture 0, for a purpose to be subsequently disclosed. An armextending portion 6 is adapted to reciprocate between the said guide means k and is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 42, bearings 72. and preferably a hook portion '10, at the end opposite bearings h for a purpose to be subsequently disclosed. The bearings 7a are designed to carry a spindle (1 upon which is mounted a wheel 6,
the like. The arm member 7a and the extension portion-2' are designed to be coupled together by alining slot n of the latter with having a peripheral covering 0 of rubber or the aperture in the former, and passing a screw threaded stud 9 having a head 39, through the slotted aperture and providing a nut r for the stud, whereby the two portionsk and i may be held in rigid relation to position the peripheryof the wheel I) to tangentially engage the top card of the pack v s, in the receptacle 2!, in the most effective manner for advancing the same. This adjustment of the arm formed by inembers k and 2', enables the device to be adjusted for use with packs of cardsof difierent sizes. The wheel I) carries laterally thereof, a lug t to which is secured a tension spring u, having the other end operatively connected to arm portion 2',- as by hook w, a flexible member 'v, s1'1ch as a chain, being also connected to the lug t and trained about bearin h with it's free end connected to a second exiin the receptacle, until they are dislodged and by gravity fall between the cards in the receptacle. By repeating this action, four or five times, the cards are thoroughly shuflied. The cards'are dealt bythe manipulator grasping the receptacle as in one hand and by alternately directing it to the place in frontof the players, advancing a card or more as. may be desired at each place, by drawing'on cord w by the aid of the ring 3 This action of drawing on cord m rotates the wheel I) forwardly, advancing the top card in the device, as disclosed in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, and placing the spring it under tension, which returns the wheel 6 to a normal position when the flexible member is operated to so permit.
