Description

W. B. HIX.
Fruit Drier.
Patented March 8, 1870.
N. PETERS, PHOTOYLITHOGHAPHEN. WASHINGTON, DV 0 through the line 3; y, fig. 1;
WILEY B. HIX, or ROME, GEORGIA;
Letters Patent 1Y0. 100,530, dated March 8, 1870; antedated March 2, 187 0.
I Fan's: ron DRY-HOUSES.
, clear and exact description thereof, which'will enable othersskilled in the art, to make and use the same,
reference being had-t0 theaccompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 is a horizontal section of my improved flue, taken through the line a: 2;, Figure 2.
Figure 2 is a longitudinalsection of the same taken Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My present applieationis for certain improvements upon the patent of January 8, 1861, but which may he applied with equal benefit to driers of a difierent construction.
On bringing that invention into public use I have discovered that itis, defective in three points,'and to remedy these has been the object to which my attention has been directedffor'several years.
' The chimney'did not work satisfactorily, coal could notbe used conveniently, and. the fines were made to three feet outside thereof.
commence even'with the wall instead of extending -My invention consists in an improved flue, in the arrangement of detachable coabgrates, and in an improved chimney. i
A represents the dry-house, which may be of any desired size or capacity.
B are the furnaces, theforward ends of which should project a little beyond the front walls of the dry-h onse, and should be provided with sliding gates, O, to reg-. ulate the draught. i v
The furnaces -B should also be provided with sliding,
grates D, for use where coal is to be used for fuel,
but which maybe removed when, wood'is to be used. E E E E E E is theflne. The parts-E"and E of the flue are made straight, and are connected with each other by a cross-flue, E, which is made in about the form shown in fig. 1 that is to say, with an angle bywhich the heated products of combustion passing through said part E of the flue will be projected towardthe forward part of the dry-house before escaping from said part 'of the flue.
The parts E and E, which pass'through the rear I The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the name through the rear wall of the dryhouse, A, and connects with the chimney F.
G is a damper which is placed in the part E of the flu'e, just before the point at which the cross-flue E unites with the said part E.
G is a damper placed in the part E of the flue, a little'beyond the point-at which the cross-fine E unites with the said part E.
G is a damper placed at or near the point at which the cross-flue E unites with the part E of the flue.
G is'a damper placed in the part E of the flue, just beyond'the point at which the cross-flue E unites with the said part E. 1
By these dampers the passage and distribution of the heated products of combustion, as they pass through the flue, may be regulated and controlled at will, so as to distribute the heat through the dryhouse, as may be required. 1
.1! is a chimney which is placed ontside the dryhouse, and which I usually prefer to make about five feet high.
G? is a damper placed in'the upper part of the chimney F, and which also assists in regulating and controlling the passage of the heated products of combustion through the flue, audconsequently assists. in regulating the distribution ot' the heat.
. His an elbow or bent section of pipe, which is connected with the top' of the chimney F, in such a way that it may be conveniently turned about, according to the direction of the wind.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and. desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The arrangement in the furnace of a fruit-dryer of sliding and detachable coal-grates D D, as and for the purpose specified.
2. The arrangement of the flues E E E E E E, as shown and described, for distributing the heat in the manner set forth.
3. The combination of the base F, having valve Gr therein, with the rotary pipe H, all as shown aiid described, to form a suitable chimney.
