HENRY J. GAISMAN, onmiw Yonai,- N. Yr
SAFETY RzoR.
i Application filed August 1B,y 1921. Serial No. 493,532.
i To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY J. 'GArsMAN, citizen of the United States, and resident ofk New York city, Borough of Manhattan, in the county vof New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Razors, ofv
which the following is a specification.
My invention relates toimprovement in safety' razors and lmore particularly to the class of razors having a movably supported blade and movable guard provided with means to cooperatewith the blade to retainv it in shaving position respecting the guard,
and to releas the blade replacement as well as lstropping.
. The object of for removal and forA cleaning and my invention is to provide slmple, cheap and effective means to mov-.
ably support a guard in av safety razor to retain and release a blade .as required, whereby the blade edge may be retained in proper shaving position respecting the guard. Y i i My invention comprises novel details of improvement that will be more fully hereinafter set forth, and then pointed out inv the. claims.
Refrence is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein- Figure 1 is a plan view`of embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a sideview of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an underside view in section on line 3, 3, in Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged section on line 4, 4, in Fig. 1; 1
Fig. 5 is a section on line 5, 5, in Fig. 2.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding arts in the several views.
The numeralp 1 indicates the mainframe of my improved safety razor which may be of any Vsuitable construction, shown provid# ed with al handle 2 which may be attached to. the frame in any'well known manner. :Frame 1 comprises a base portion 1a and yspaced uprights 1b through which a strop may be passed from lside to side. A blade holder 3 is shown movably supportedv upon frame 1 between uprights 1" upon a shaft 4 pivoted betweensaid upri hts. The blade holder v43 may be of any wely known variety adapted to securely retain the blade 5, said blade holder being shown in the form Vof spaced plate-like members to receive the a safety razorV the guard teeth and heel of the blade therebetween and with stops 5, 6, at the ends to retain the Lblade removably in the holder. A guard for the blade edge is indicated at 7 shown provided with guard teeth 8 arranged in any well known manner. Said guard is shown pro.- vided with stops or hooks'9 adjacent to its corners to engage the blade edge to retain the blade in .shaving relation to the guard teeth. Said guard is pivotally supported upon base 1a to rock or tilt relatively thereto to move the guard teeth and the stops 9 with respect tothe blade edge. 'I have guard 7 provided with laterally or downwardly extending lugs or pivotally connected by pivots orrivets 11 with lugs or ears 12 extending from the ends of base 1. Lugs 12 are shown located outside of lugs 11 and in juxtaposition thereto, whereby the guard is rockably retained from lateral or endwise displacement. The guard member 7 is provided with an outward projection or thumb piece'. 13 shown projecting of therazor and provided with an opening 13n receiving handle 2, said opening being of suiicient size to permit the projection 13 to be moved along kthe handle when the guard isvto be rocked. It will be observed that the pivots 11 are located between `the guard teeth 8 and handle 2hence between the projection 13. The projection 13 operates below b se'la so that when said projection is pushdl up it will cause the guard to swing away from the blade edge. The movement of projection 13 i will bel limited by the base l, Fig. 4. To
base 1 undertension when the pivots l1v are set in the lugs, having,slight clearance' between the end portions of theguard member and base l.
' I have illustrated my improvement in connection with means for rocking the blade while. in frame'l comprising a roller 14 journaled in the frame between shaft 4 and base 1,
mesh with a gear 16 securedv to rollenl. -A
beyond the rear portioncorrespondears 10 said shaft having a gear 15 in strop may`be passed between roller 14 and base la and when held taut the blade may be rocked by reciprocating the frame along the strop with the under surface of roller 14 in engagement with the strop, in a well known manner.
lVhen the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 2 stops or hooks 9 will engage the blade edge to retain the latter in shaving relation to the guard teeth 8. Whenit is desired to release the blade from the guard, the projectin 13 is pushed toward base l, lwhereby the guard will be rocked to move its stops 9 away from the blade edge to release the latter, as indicated in full lines in Fig. 4, whereby the blade may be raised from the guard by rotating it for removal and` re-placement, for cleaning, and for stropping, since with the blade raised from the guard the strop may be passed between roller 14and base l, (Fig. 4). When it is desiredto replace the blade in operating. relation to the guard the blade is lowered to rest against the guard member, (which is then lowered), the projection 13 is drawn down, (as to the dotted position in Fig. 4),
causing the outer end of the guard to rise toward the blade edge to engage the stops or hooks 9, whereupon the guard and blade will bein the full `line position 'shown in Fig. 2 and the dotted line position shown in Fig. 4. j
My improvements are simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, not liable to get out of order, readily operable, and effective in use to retain `the blade for shaving and to release the bladeV for/other purposes before specified.
Changes may `construction set forth, within the scope of the appended claims. without departing from the spirit of lny invention.
Having now described my invention, what I claim is 1. A safety razor comprising a frame, al
- to engage and release the blade.
2. A safety razor comprising a frame having a handle, a blade holder movably carried by the'frame, a guard'having stops to engagethe blade, and means pivota'lly supporting the guard upon the frame between said stops and handle. said guard having an integral projection for the finger extending beyond the pivots of thev guard beyond the handle'on the side opposite the stops.
8. AA safety razor comprising a frame having a handle, a blade holder movably carried by the frame, a guard having stops' to be made in the details oftending beyond the handle, said projection l having an opening receiving said handle.
4. A safety razor comprising a `trame having a handle and a base extending on one side of the handle, means on the frame to movably support a blade, and a guard pivotally carried by said base on one side of the handle and provided with stops to engage the blade, said frame and guard having slidably engaging surfaces concentric with said pivotal-means to frictionally retain the guard.
5. A safety razor comprising a frame having ahandle and a base extending on one side of the handle, means on'the frame to movably support a blade, said extending portion of the frame having lugs, and a guard having lugs pivotally attaehedto the rst named lugs, said guard having means to retain the blade. g
G. A. safety razor comprising a frame having a handle and a base extending on one side of the handle, means on the frame to movably support a blade, said extending portion of the framel having lugs, and a guard having lugs pivotally attached to the first named lugs, said guard having means to retain the blade, said guard being provided witha projection extending beyond said lugs on the side opposite said retaining means.
7. A safety razor comprising a frame having a handle and a base extending on one side of the handle, means on the frame to movably support a blade, said extending Y portion of the frame having lugs, and a guard having'lugs pivotally attached to the first named lugs, said guard having means to retain the blade, said guard being .pro-
vided with a projection extending beyond said lugs on the side opposite said retaining means, said projection being provided with an opening receiving said handle.
8. A safety razor comprising a frame having a handle and a base extending onl one side of the handle, means on the frame `tomovably support a blade, said extending portion of the trame having lugs, and a guard having lugs pivotally attached to the first named lugs, said guard having means to retain the blade, said guard being. pro-` vided with a projection extending beyond said lugs on the side opposite said retaining means, said projection opposing said base to be stopped thereby when the projection moves the guard away from the blade.
, Signed at New York city, in the county of New York, and State of New York, this 17th day of August, A. D. 1921.
HENRY J. GAISMAN.
