Abstract

A baby changing pad configured to store accessories for changing a diaper of an infant or child. The changing pad includes a main body with a plurality of horizontal and vertical seams upon which the changing pad can be folded. A waterproof reloadable wipe dispenser is attached to or integrated into the changing pad. A pouch is attached to or integrated into the changing pad and is configured to store diapers. Magnets and a wrist strap are attached to the changing pad. The changing pad can be folded along the plurality of horizontal and vertical seams into a closed position, which is held in place with the magnets. A user can carry the changing pad by using an integrated wrist strap.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

Field of the Invention

This invention relates to the general field of personal accessories for individuals with young children, and more specifically toward a baby changing pad configured to store accessories for changing a diaper of an infant or child. The changing pad includes a main body with a plurality of horizontal and vertical seams upon which the changing pad can be folded. A waterproof reloadable wipe dispenser is attached to or integrated into the changing pad. A pouch is attached to or integrated into the changing pad and is configured to store diapers. Magnets and a wrist strap are attached to the changing pad. The changing pad can be folded along the plurality of horizontal and vertical seams into a closed position, which is held in place with the magnets. A user can carry the changing pad by using an integrated wrist strap.
Parents and other caregivers often have to change a child's diaper when away from home. This involves finding an appropriate location with a flat, stable surface to lay the child such that the child's diaper can be quickly and safely changed. When a bathroom with a changing table is not available, parents will use alternative surfaces that are readily available, such as the backs of cars, park benches, tables, and even the ground. Even if a bathroom with a changing table is available, the changing table surface may not be sanitary or comfortable, and in many cases is elevated off the ground. When children are restless and move about, an individual changing the child's diaper must contend with keep the child safely on the changing surface, usually with one hand, while removing the diaper, obtaining and using wipes, and then placing and securing a new diaper to the child with the other hand. Experienced parents may even have difficulties in changing a diaper, especially those that are particularly messy, because of the difficulties in obtaining diapers and wipes when only one hand is available. There are also occasions where parents require access to wipes quickly. Such occasions often occur when the changing pad and other accessories are folded up and stored away in a bag.
Thus there has existed a long-felt need for a changing pad that provides a sanitary and comfortable surface for changing a diaper while at the same time provided diapers and wipes in an easily accessible location, whether or not the changing pad is folded or unfolded.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The current invention provides just such a solution by having a baby changing pad configured to store accessories for changing a the diaper of an infant or child. The changing pad includes a main body with plurality of horizontal and vertical seams upon which the changing pad can be folded. A waterproof reloadable wipe dispenser is attached to or integrated into the changing pad. A pouch is attached to or integrated into the changing pad and is configured to store diapers. Magnets and a wrist strap are attached to the changing pad. The changing pad can be folded along the plurality of horizontal and vertical seams into a closed position, which is held in place with the magnets. A user can carry the changing pad by using an integrated wrist strap.
It is an object of the invention to provide a changing pad that folds into a compact size such that it will fit into many styles of diaper bags.
It is another object of the invention to provide a changing pad with wipes that are accessible whether the changing pad is folded or unfolded.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a changing pad that can be folded and unfolded using only one hand.
A particular embodiment of the changing pad disclosed herein comprises a first section, where the first section comprises a first set of magnets; a second section; a third section, where the third section comprises a second set of magnets and a third set of magnets; a fourth section; where the fourth section comprises a fourth set of magnets and a wipes compartment; and two flaps, where each flap is secured to a side of the first section, second section, and third section; where the first set of magnets mate with the second set of magnets and the third set of magnets mate with the fourth set of magnets. The third section comprises an internal compartment. The third section further comprises a fastener, where the fastener restricts access to the internal compartment of the third section. The changing pad may further comprise a strap. The flaps fold over the first section, second section and third section along a flap fold. The first section folds over the second section along a first fold, the second section folds over the third section along a second fold, and the third section folds under the fourth section along a third fold.
Another embodiment of the changing pad disclosed herein is a device comprising a first section; a second section; a third section, where the third section comprises a first set of magnets; a fourth section; where the fourth section comprises a second set of magnets and a wipes compartment; and where the first section folds over the second section along a first fold, the second section folds over the third section along a second fold, and the third section folds under the fourth section along a third fold; and where the first set of magnets mate with the second set of magnets. The third section comprises an internal compartment. The third section further comprises a fastener, where the fastener restricts access to the internal compartment of the third section. The device further comprises a strap. The strap is secured between the third section and fourth section along the third fold. The device further comprises two flaps, where each flap is secured to a side of the first section, second section, and third section. The flaps fold over the first section, second section and third section along a flap fold. The first section comprises a third set of magnets and where the third section further comprises a fourth set of magnets, where the third set of magnets mate with the fourth set of magnets.
Yet another embodiment of the invention disclosed herein is a method of changing the diaper of an individual comprising the steps of unfolding a changing pad, where the changing pad comprises a first section, where the first section comprises a first set of magnets; a second section; a third section, where the third section comprises a second set of magnets and a third set of magnets; a fourth section; where the fourth section comprises a fourth set of magnets and a wipes compartment; and two flaps, where each flap is secured to a side of the first section, second section, and third section; where the first set of magnets mate with the second set of magnets and the third set of magnets mate with the fourth set of magnets; and changing the diaper of an individual. The third section comprises an internal compartment. The third section further comprises a fastener, where the fastener restricts access to the internal compartment of the third section. The changing pad further comprises a strap. The method further comprises the step of folding the flaps over the first section, second section and third section. The method further comprises the steps of folding the first section folds over the second section along a first fold; folding the second section folds over the third section along a second fold, and folding the third section folds under the fourth section along a third fold.
An additional embodiment of the invention disclosed herein is a device comprising a first section; a second section; a third section, where the third section comprises a fastener; a fourth section; where the fourth section comprises a first set of fasteners; a fifth section, where the fifth section comprises a second set of fasteners and a fastening tab; where the fastening tab of the fifth section mates with the fastener of the third section, where the first set of fasteners of the fourth section mate with the second set of fasteners of the fifth section. The fifth section comprises an internal compartment, where the internal compartment is accessible through an opening. The first set of fasteners of the fourth section comprises magnets, and wherein the second set of fasteners of the fifth section comprises magnets. The changing pad further comprises a strap. The strap is secured between the fourth section and fifth section. The changing pad further comprises two flaps, where each flap is secured to a side of the first section, second section, third section, and fourth section. The fifth section further comprises a plurality of elastic straps. The fifth section has four corners, wherein the fifth section further comprises four elastic straps, where the straps extend diagonally across the four corners.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

Many aspects of the invention can be better understood with the references made to the drawings below. The components in the drawings are not necessarily drawn to scale. Instead, emphasis is placed upon clearly illustrating the components of the present invention. Moreover, like reference numerals designate corresponding parts through the several views in the drawings.
By way of example, one embodiment of the present system comprises a changing pad, configured with a plurality of horizontal and vertical seams upon which the changing pad can be folded. A waterproof reloadable wipe dispenser is attached to the changing pad. A pouch is attached to the changing pad configured to store diapers. Magnets and a wrist strap are attached to the changing pad. The changing pad can be folded along the plurality of horizontal and vertical seams into a closed position, which is held in place with the magnets and can be carried via the wrist strap.
Turning to these components in more detail and in some embodiments, the changing pad made of wipeable material to easily sanitize, about 2 feet long and 16 inches wide. The waterproof reloadable wipe dispenser can be located at the very bottom of the changing pad and be about 4 inches long and 9 inches wide. The pouch for diaper stowage can be ¾ of the way toward the bottom of the changing pad.
The plurality of horizontal and vertical seams can include two seams that go down the length of the changing pad, and four seams that are perpendicular to the length of the changing pad, equally spaced. The magnets can hold changing pad and wipe dispenser in closed position. The wrist strap can be located at the bottom corner of the device in the closed position.
Two layers of wipeable material can be sewn together to make the overall shape of the changing pad. Two seams can be sewn down the length of the changing pad, ending before the wipe dispenser, making the overall width of the changing pad as wide as the wipe dispenser once the changing pad folds inwards along the length. An additional four seams can be sewn across the width of the changing pad to create a crease for the changing pad to fold down. Seams can get pressed to create a permanent crease for ease of folding the changing pad.
Another layer of material can be sewn on top of the two layers of wipeable material to create a pouch for storing diapers and can be located three quarters of the way from the bottom of the changing pad. Another layer of material can be sewn on top of the bottom quadrant to provide for the waterproof reloadable wipe dispenser. In between this layer can be waterproof material made of a silicone material. The very edge of the wipe dispenser can have a zip lock seal glued or otherwise permanently affixed thereto, to provide access into the wipe dispenser to reload product. In the middle of the wipe dispenser, a plastic flap can be glued on and a zigzag line can be cut in the material under the flap for wipes to dispense and for the material to catch the next wipe. In between the initial and subsequent layers of material can be magnets that are sewn around to keep in place so that when changing pad is folded it remains in closed position. The material can have defined creases for the changing pad to fold in specific areas. A metal clasp can be placed at the bottom corner for a wrist strap to be sewn on to the changing pad.
In some embodiments, the pouch for the diapers could be placed on the underside of the changing pad, however the clean diapers will be laying on an unsanitary surface. The wipes dispenser could have a different packaging configuration, but it may require both hands to gain access to the wipes. The seal where the wipe dispenser closes can use a zipper, Velcro®, or other material to keep closed. The top plastic flap that is used to dispense the wipes, could also be made of other material or have different shape, or not even be used at all.
In an open position, the baby changing pad provides a sanitary space for a baby to lay in a public facility while changing the baby's diaper. The pouch for the diaper stowage provides space for diapers to be accessible by one hand while the caregiver is changing the soiled diaper, and can be located near the baby's legs. The waterproof reloadable wipe dispenser provides a space for baby wipes to stay moist and accessible with one hand to grab and clean up the baby. The waterproof reloadable wipe dispenser can be attached at the foot of the changing pad. Each element is connected, so that the caregiver isn't fumbling with multiple items along with baby, hence providing a safer environment for the baby in public facilities. Each element listed above for the changing pad are made of a wipeable material so that is can easily be sanitized.
To close the changing pad, a user can fold the changing pad inwards along the two longest seams, then fold down from the head of the changing pad toward the wipe dispenser along the vertical seams. Once the top of the changing pad is closed it can stay in closed position with magnets. The user can then fold the wipe dispenser backwards and it can stay in fixed position with magnets.
In the closed position, the magnets are sewn into the material and keep the changing pad folded to occupy minimal space in diaper bag/purse/tote/etc. The magnets keep the wipe dispenser in a fixed position for easy access to wipes while out of the restroom and the changing pad is in diaper bag/purse/tote/etc. The wrist strap provides an easy way for a caregiver to carry the baby changer, especially if handling a baby, and can be attached at the bottom corner of the folded changing pad.
FIG. 1 is a top view of a changing pad according to selected embodiments of the current disclosure. The changing pad 10 includes a main body that comprises a plurality of sections, including a first section 24, second section 25, third section 26, and fourth section 27. The first section 24 is adjacent to the second section 25. The second section 25 is adjacent to the first section 24 and the third section 26. The third section 26 is adjacent to the second section 25 and fourth section 27. The fourth section 27 is adjacent to the third section 26. Flaps 22 are connected to each side of the changing pad 10, specifically to the first section 24, second section 25, and third section 26. A particular embodiment provides for a changing pad that is substantially made from layers of continuous material, where a single layer of material spans across multiple sections. Alternatively, each section can be made from separate pieces of material, and each section secured to another.
The fourth section 27 includes a wipes compartment 51. The wipes compartment can store baby wipes or other similar items. As described below, the wipes compartment is accessible whether the changing pad is in an open, unfolded configuration or a closed, completely folded configuration.
To assist users in properly and efficiently folding the changing pad, folds, creases, stitching, or even visual demarcations are used between the various sections and folds. A first fold 41 is positioned between the first section 24, and second section 25. A second fold is positioned between the second section 25 and the third section 26. A third fold 43 is positioned between the third section 26 and the fourth section 27. Flap folds 22 are positioned between a flap 22 and the various sections that the flap is attached to, and run perpendicular to the first fold 41, second fold 42 and third fold 43. Furthermore, the flap folds 22 intersect the first fold 41 and the second fold 42.
Magnets are disposed within or to different sections to secure the changing pad in a closed configuration. The first section 24 includes a first set of magnets 31 that mate, or pair, with a second set of magnets 32 secured within or to the third section 26. The third section 26 also includes a third set of magnets 33 that mate with a fourth set of magnets 34 within or on the fourth section 27.
FIG. 1 also shows the changing pad 10 with a wrist strap 47. The wrist strap 47 in this particular embodiment is secured between the third section 26 and fourth section 27, where the third fold 43 meets the flap fold 23. Various materials may be used for the wrist strap 27, including the same or different materials used to make the other portions of the changing pad 10.
Compartments may be integrated into one or more of the sections of the changing pad. The fourth section 27 includes a wipes compartment 51 that is accessible when the changing pad 10 is in a folded or unfolded configuration. The third section 26 includes a zipper 53 or other fastener that can be opened and closed repeatedly that provides access to a compartment within the third section 26 when opened, and can secured contents within the compartment of the third section 26 when closed.
FIG. 2 is a top view of a changing pad with flaps folded in according to selected embodiments of the current disclosure. Flaps 22 are folded over the first section 24, second section 25 and third section 26.
FIG. 3 is a top view of a partially folded changing pad according to selected embodiments of the current disclosure. The first section 24 is folded over the second section (not visible in this figure). The first set of magnets 31 position on or within the first section 24 will mate with the second set of magnets 32 of the third section 26 when the changing pad is further folded, as shown in FIG. 4.
FIG. 4 is a top view of a substantially folded changing pad according to selected embodiments of the current disclosure. The second section 25 is folded over the third section 26, whereby the first set of magnets 31 mate with the second set of magnets 32 of the third section 26.
FIG. 5 is a top view of a completely folded changing pad according to selected embodiments of the current disclosure. The three section folded together in FIG. 4 (the first section 24, second section 25 and third section 26) are folded under the fourth section 27.

The fourth section 27 is adjacent to the third section 26, which in turn is adjacent to the first section 24, which in turn is adjacent to the second section. One skilled in the art will appreciate that the changing pad disclosed herein can be unfolded by following the above steps in reverse order.
The wipes compartment is accessible whether changing pad is folded or expanded (unfolded). As shown in FIG. 6, the wipes compartment of the fourth section is accessible while changing the child's diaper. Furthermore, as shown in FIG. 9, the wipes compartment of the fourth section is accessible when the changing pad is in a closed or folded configuration. This is possible because the first three sections are folded underneath the fourth section, instead of over the fourth section. The magnets positioned in the sections as described above keep the changing pad in a closed or folded configuration until a sufficient force is applied to separate the magnets, such as by a user pulling the sections apart.
In an alternative embodiment, there is a compartment for storing various items, including diapers and/or ointments, behind the wipes compartment in the fourth section. This compartment could be accessible via a zipper, hook and loop fastener, magnets or other fasteners.
In another embodiment, there is an elastic strap that is secured to the fourth section. When the changing pad is in a closed or folded configuration, a user can extend the elastic strap around the entire changing pad to help maintain the changing pad in a closed or folded configuration. Furthermore, additional elastic straps may be incorporated into the changing pad to help retain the changing pad in a closed or folded configuration.
In yet another embodiment, there are multiple elastic straps, such as four elastic straps, secured to the fourth section that run diagonally across the corners of the fourth section. These elastic straps can be in addition to or in place of the wipes compartment, where the elastic straps secure a package of wipes to the changing pad.
FIG. 10 is a top view of a changing pad according to selected embodiments of the current disclosure. In this embodiment, there are five sections. A first section 69 is adjacent to a second section 70, which in turn is adjacent to a third section 71, which in turn is adjacent to a fourth section 72, which in turn is adjacent to a fifth section 73. Flaps 67 are adjacent to the first section 69, second section 70, third section 71, and fourth section 72, and fold along flap fold 68. The fifth section 73 includes four elastic straps 96 that are used to secure a package of wipes (not shown) to the changing pad 10. Within the fifth section 73 there is an internal compartment accessible via an opening 97. The internal compartment within the fifth section 73 can be used to store various items including diapers and ointments. The fourth section includes a first set of fasteners 76 that mate with a second set of fasteners 77 included in the fifth section 73 when the changing pad is folded. A particular embodiment uses magnets as the first set of fasteners and second set of fasteners, where the magnets are embedded within each of their respective sections. Another embodiment uses hook and loop fasteners as the first set of fasteners and second set of fasteners, where the hook and loop fasteners are secured to the surface of their respective sections. A fastening tab 81 extends from the edge of the fifth section 73 above the opening 97, and mates with a fastener 82 of the third section 71 when the changing pad is folded. A particular embodiment uses magnets at the end of the fastening tab 81 and the fastener 82. Another embodiment uses hook and loop fasteners at the end of the fastening tab and the fastener 82. The fastening tab includes an length of material that extends the fastening portion of the fastening tab some distance away from the surface of the fifth section.
To fold the changing pad shown in FIG. 10, first fold in flaps 67 along flap fold 68 towards the middle of the changing pad 10. First section 69 folds over second section 70 along first fold 86, and then second section 70 folds over third section 71 along second fold 87. These folded sections are then folded over fourth section 72 along third fold 88, and the fastening tab 81 is secured to fastener 82 of third section 71. The first through fourth sections are then folded under fifth section 73 along fold 89, which is approximately along a line parallel to the opening 97, where the first set of fasteners 76 of the fourth section mate with the second sent of fasteners 77 of the fifth section 73. When in this folded configuration, the compartment within fifth section 73 is partially accessible through opening 97, while certain items (such as diapers) are at least partially restrained within the compartment by fastening tab 81. A pack of wipes can be secured to the changing pad 10 by elastic straps 96, where the elastic straps are stretched to place the wipes underneath the elastic straps, and then released to apply a restraining force against the pack of wipes against the surface of the fifth section 73. Users may carry the changing bad by using wrist strap 92.
The first section of the changing pad may include open cell foam to provide a more comfortable surface for the child while the child's diaper is being changed. In fact, additional sections or even all of the sections may include open cell foam, closed cell foam, or other cushioning material to provide a more comfortable surface for the child. The materials used to form the sections of the changing pad can be a waterproof material, whereby the changing pad can be water resistant or even waterproof. This provides for a changing pad that is easier to clean up as well as still being usable even if submersed in water.
It should be understood that while the preferred embodiments of the invention are described in some detail herein, the present disclosure is made by way of example only and that variations and changes thereto are possible without departing from the subject matter coming within the scope of the following claims, and a reasonable equivalency thereof, which claims I regard as my invention.

Claims

That which is claimed:

1. A changing pad comprising

a first section, where the first section comprises a first set of magnets;

a second section;

a third section, where the third section comprises a second set of magnets and a third set of magnets;

a fourth section; where the fourth section comprises a fourth set of magnets and a wipes compartment; and

two flaps, where each flap is secured to a side of the first section, second section, and third section;

where the first set of magnets mate with the second set of magnets and the third set of magnets mate with the fourth set of magnets.

2. The changing pad of claim 1, wherein the third section comprises an internal compartment.

3. The changing pad of claim 2, wherein the third section further comprises a fastener, where the fastener restricts access to the internal compartment of the third section.

4. The changing pad of claim 1, further comprising a strap.

5. The changing pad of claim 1, wherein the flaps fold over the first section, second section and third section along a flap fold.

6. The changing pad of claim 1, wherein the first section folds over the second section along a first fold, the second section folds over the third section along a second fold, and the third section folds under the fourth section along a third fold.

7. A device comprising

a first section;

a second section;

a third section, where the third section comprises a fastener;

a fourth section; where the fourth section comprises a first set of fasteners;

a fifth section, where the fifth section comprises a second set of fasteners and a fastening tab;

where the fastening tab of the fifth section mates with the fastener of the third section, where the first set of fasteners of the fourth section mate with the second set of fasteners of the fifth section.

8. The device of claim 7, wherein the fifth section comprises an internal compartment, where the internal compartment is accessible through an opening.

9. The device of claim 8, wherein the first set of fasteners of the fourth section comprises magnets, and wherein the second set of fasteners of the fifth section comprises magnets.

10. The device of claim 7, further comprising a strap.

11. The device of claim 10, wherein the strap is secured between the fourth section and fifth section.

12. The device of claim 7, further comprising two flaps, where each flap is secured to a side of the first section, second section, third section, and fourth section.

13. The device of claim 7, wherein the fifth section further comprises a plurality of elastic straps.

14. The device of claim 7, wherein the fifth section has four corners, wherein the fifth section further comprises four elastic straps, where the straps extend diagonally across the four corners.

15. A method of changing the diaper of an individual comprising the steps of

unfolding a changing pad, where the changing pad comprises a first section; a second section; a third section, where the third section comprises a fastener; a fourth section; where the fourth section comprises a first set of fasteners; a fifth section, where the fifth section comprises a second set of fasteners and a fastening tab; where the fastening tab of the fifth section mates with the fastener of the third section, where the first set of fasteners of the fourth section mate with the second set of fasteners of the fifth section; and

changing the diaper of an individual.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the fifth section comprises an internal compartment.

17. The method of claim 15, wherein the fifth section further comprises a plurality of elastic straps.

18. The method of claim 15, wherein the changing pad further comprises a strap.

19. The method of claim 15, wherein the changing pad further comprises two flaps, where each flap is secured to a side of the first section, second section, third section, and fourth section further; and wherein the method further comprises the step of unfolding folding the flaps before changing the diaper of an individual.

20. The method of claim 15, wherein the first set of fasteners of the fourth section comprises magnets, and wherein the second set of fasteners of the fifth section comprises magnets.
