JAMES L. GRIFFIN, OF GUSSETA, TEXAS.
BALE-TIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,591, dated July 19, 1881.
' Application filed June 4, 1881. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES LEE GRIFFIN, of Gusseta, in the county of Cass and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Bale-Tie, of which the followingis a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved tie for bales of cotton, hay, wool, 85c.
The invention consists in a metal band plovided with a series of longitudinal slots at each end in combination with a plate with a button fitting into these slots on its under side, this button being passed through the slots of the two overlapped ends of the strip or band, then turned aquarter-revolution when the bale has been compressed sufiiciently.
In, the accompanying drawings,Figure l is a perspective view of the plate with the button. Fig. 2is a perspective view of the slotted strip or band. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the under side of the ow'erlapped ends ot'the slotted band.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A metal strip or band, A,is provided at one end, B,witha series oflongitudinal slots, about three-fourths of an inch apart in the direction of the length oftlIe band or strip, whereas at the opposite end, 1), of the band the slots are about three to four inches apart to about the middle of the band. A plate, E, is provided longitudinal head, G, at its end. This plate E is provided with a slot, B, through which the band A is passed when the bale-tie is packed for transportation.
The button-head G is passed through the first slot 0 of the end B of the band A, and then the band is drawn tightly around the bale, and when drawn tight enough the buttou' orhead G is passed through the corre- Y spondiug slot 0 of the end D of the band, and is then turned quarter-way around, and thus locks the two ends of the band A together. It the bale cannot be compressed sufficiently to get the first slot 0 of the end B of the band to correspond with one of the slots on the end D, the button G must be passed through the next slot C until two slots in opposite ends of the band will correspond.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A bale-tie made substantially as herein shown and described, and consistiugof a band or strip of metal provided with a series of slots, in combination with a plate provided with a shank or stud with an elongated head, as set forth.
2. Ina bale-tie, the combination, with a metal band, A, provided with slots 0. at each end, of the plate E, with a shank or stud, F, with an elongated head, G, at the end,'substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
JAMES LEE GRIFFIN.
