Description

UNITED STATES PATENT CEEIcE.
DAvIS D UTcHEI-z., or BLUE GRASS, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORN-PLANTERS.
lSpecification forming part of Letters Patent No. 28,847, dated .lune 2G, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAvIs DUTCHER, of Blue Grass, inthe county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn-Planting Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specication, in which-A Figure l represents a perspective view of the machine. Figs. 2, ,8, and 4 represent transverse sections through the same at different points. Fig 5 represents atop plan, and Fig. 6 represents a side elevation ofthe machine.
Similar `letters of reference, where they occur in the several figures, denote like parts of the machine in all of them.
To enable others skilled in the art to Inake and use my invention, I will proceedto describe the same with reference to the drawings.
F represents a rectangular frame supported nea its rear by two wheels, C C, said wheels C C being fast on their axles D D', respectively, so las to turn together.
O is the conductors or driver-s seat. placed rather behind the axles of the bearingwheels, so as to balance the machine and put it more under the' control of the conductor.
Near the front of the frame F, and between the timbers, are two supporting-pieces, a (l,
'furnished each with two slots, b c. Through the slots b bolts d pass, so that the supporting pieces freely move up and down on them. Through the lower slots, C, the axle or journals c pass, said axle carrying the two front supporting-wheels, ff. A bolt, Z, having a ringhead, m, by which it is suspended to the journals of said axle, passes through a flange, a, on the upper ends of the shoes or plows g, and by means of the nuts o o on the screw-bolt the plows can be raised or lowered on the sup porting-pieces or stocks a a.
B B are the hoppers, arranged one on each side of the frame, and R the seed tubes or ducts leading therefrom to the fnrrows opened `4by the shoes or plows g g. Shafts A A extend through these hoppers, which close up the bottoms thereof, these shafts being furnished with recesses, as seen in Fig. 5, which receive the charge of grain, and as the shafts rock or roll carry said charges of grain out of the hopper It is and drop them into the seed-tubes, whence they drop into the furrows opened by the plows.
On the axle D of the main wheel C there yis a cogged wheel, E, which gears with and turns a smaller cog-wheel, r, on the shaft D p, and thus turning said shaft. On each end ofthe shaft D p there is a crank, q (j, which, by means of its respective connecting-rod z, unites it with a crank, XV, on the seeding roller or shaft A, so that the continuous rotation of the shaft D p shall give a rocking Inotion to the seedingrollers A. There is also a hand-wheel, t,`on the shaftD p, which the driver or conductor from his seat O can grasp, so that if the dropping is in advance'or rear of the marks he may suspend or advance the action of the seedrolls to make them correspond, or so that when the necessity arises the dropping may be done by hand instead of automatically. The box, which carries that end of the shaft D p thathas upon it the gear-whecl 1', is secured to the frame by screws X, passing through slots w, .and tothe box is attached one end of a link or rod, Q, the other end thereof being attached to the short arm of a lever, F, pivoted at M, and extending up into convenient position for the driver to grasp, who, by forcing forward said lever, slides the cog-wheel r out of gear with.
Vthe Inain cog-wheel E, and thus throws out of gear the dropping apparatus as well. as the marking apparatus. v
On the cranks q q (or rather 011 their wristpins) are hung the markers yy, said markers being connected near their lower ends by a cross-brace, X, to which a hinged adj listing-bar, Y, is connected, said bar having a series of ad- ]'usting-holes in it, l 2 3 4, Figs. l, 5, for regulating or spacing the steps or marks'made by:
said markers as they rise, and are carried forward and droppedA by the cranks q g, to which they are hung, and thus marking the ground in advance for the subsequent droppings, or making marks for guiding or directing the dropping, and for keeping it in check-rows for the convenience of plowing or cultivating afterward.
A bar or shaft (marked C Gr) extends across the front part of the machine, to which a lever, II, is connected, and which extends back toward the drivers Seat, where it passes through .or in contact with a guide or post furnished with a series of holes, (two or 1nore,) so that by means of a pin said lever may be attached to said guide or post, for a purpose to be pres ently described'.
To the shaft C G are connected two arms or levers, H', to which the axle e is suspended by chains I, or other flexible connection, that will allow the wheels f and plows y to rise at any time to pass intervening obstacles, and at the saine time allow the driver in his seat to raise them up also whenever it becomes necessary to do so. The axle c is further braced and supported to and by the main frame through the rods K, which extend back to and are secured on the rear cross-piece of the frame.
S are braces for holding` and adjusting the seed-tubes R in proper position with-regardto the shoes or plows. The rear wheels, C C, roll over the hills of corn thus planted and press down the earth upon the hills. The tongue is a rigid one. rEhe wheels f are regulators for defining the extent to which the plows shall enter the ground.
Having thus fully described the nature and object of my invention, what l claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
l.. The combination ofthe seeding and marking apparatus, operating together in the inanner and for the purpose substantially as described.
2. The combination of the plows and supporting and gaging wheels f, so that they may DAVIS DUTCHER.
