Claims. (Cl. 206--56) This invention relates to cosmetic accessories and is directed particularly to improvements in lipstick cases of the type wherein mechanism is provided tor ejecting the lipstick from its container case.

Lipstick cases wherein a lipstick cartridge is supported on a base member arranged within an outer container or casing and which can be raised for using the lipstick by means of a straight or spiral guide slot between the base and the outer container are known. Such lipstick cases heretofore devised however, have all required the use of two hands .to raise the lipstick into its position for use.

It is accordingly the principal object of this invention to provide an improved lipstick case having means for opening the outer container and raising the lipstick in one operation and by the use of only one hand.

Another object of this invention is to provide an improved lipstick case of the above nature wherein the case cover is provided with a mirror which when said cover is open, aids the user to apply the lipstick to her face.

Still another object of this invention is to provide a lipstick case of the character described including automatic means for locking the cover to prevent accidental opening when carried in a purse or handbag.

Another object is to provide a lipstick case of the character described which will be inexpensive to manufacture, attractive in appearance, easy to manipulate and durable in use.

Other objects, features and advantages of this invention will be apparent from the following description when read with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:

Referring now to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 10 designates generally a lipstick case, the same comprising an elongated, square outer casing 11, having a bottom wall 12 and being open at the top.

Disposed for axially slidable motion within the outer casing 11 is a wedge block member 13, having a square upper end portion 14 loosely fitted in said casing.

Seated inthe upper end 14 of the wedge block member 13 is an axially-extending cylindrical lipstick cartridge 15. Push button means for raising the block member 13 and the lipstick 15 out of the casing 11 is also provided, the same comprising a generally square push button 16 which extends through a square opening in the front wall 17 of the outer casing 11 near the lower end thereof. The push button 16 is formed with upper and lower lips 18 and 19 respectively which bear against inner wall portions of the outer casing 11 to retain said push button in place.

Arranged within the outer casing 11 along the inside of the front wall 17 thereof, is an elongated, wedge-shaped finger 20, (see Fig. 8). The lower end of the finger 20 is constrained against the inside of the front wall 17 of the casing 11 by means of a coiled curved horizontal compression spring 21. The spring 21 is seated at one end in a cylindrical recess 22 at the lower end of the finger 20 and abuts with its other end against the back wall 23 of the casing 11, (see Figs. 4 and 5). The finger 20 is rounded at its upper end, as indicated at 24, and when the wedge block 31 is withdrawn into the casing 11, as illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 4, said finger rests against the inclined surface 25 of said block 13 near the upper end thereof. Thus, when the push button 16 is depressed by the thumb, while holding the lipstick case in one hand, the finger 20 will be rocked inwardly about the lower lip 19 of said push button, causing the top 24 to slide along the inclined surface 25 of the wedge block 13 to force the lipstick cartridge 15 out of the top of the casing 11, as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 5.

Means is further provided for covering the open end of the casing 11 when the lipstick case is not in use, the same comprising an L-shaped cover 26 having a top portion 27 and a side portion 28. The outer end of the top portion 27 of the cover 26 is hinged at 28a to the upper end of the back wall 23 of the casing 11.

The cover 26 is of such size, that when closed over the top of the casing 11, as illustrated in Figs. 1,. 2 and 4, the top portion 27 thereof will enclose the upper opening of said casing and the side portion 28 will lie in slightly spaced relation with respect to the front wall 17 of said and extending 'casing. The inside of the side portion 28 of the cover 26 is provided with a rectangular mirror 29 which we'll assist the user in the application of the lipstick cartridge 15. The lower end of the side portion 28 of the cover 26 is provided with a round depressing rib 30, (see Figs. 4, 5 and 7); and when said cover is closed, said rib will snap into a complementary round groove 31 formed along the top of the push button 16 and spaced from the lip 18 to securely lock the cover in place and prevent it from opening accidentally.

Mechanism is also provided for raising the cover 26 when the push button 16 is actuated, the same comprising a pair of articulated, arcuate link members 32, 33 connected together by a pin 33a and pivoted at their free ends to the wedge block 13 and the top portion 27 of said cover respectively.

As illustrated in Fig. 6, the link members 32, 33 are arranged .along one side of the casing 11 and the cover 26, and a recess 34 is provided in the block member 13 for the pivotal connection 32, the other pivotal connection being made at one side of the top portion 27 about midway along its length.

Operation In use, the lipstick case 10 will be held in one hand with the thumb resting on the push button 16. Upon pressing upon the button 16, the finger 20 will be moved inwardly to raise the lipstick from the position of Fig. 4 to that of Fig. 5. The initial motion of the button 16 will slight:-

1y lower the groove 31 therein and release the cover 26, which will be swung about its hinged connection to the position illustrated in Figs. 3 and 5 by the spring action imparted to the link members 32, 33 when the wedge block 13 is raised. The lipstick will remain in its raised position after release of the push button 16, being held in such position by the weight of the cover 26.

When the user is through using the lipstick, the cover 26' will manually be swung into closed position, which can conveniently be done by the fingers of one hand, whereupon said cover will be snap-locked in place in the groove 31 in the push button 16. The entire operation thus can expeditiously be carried out with one hand, being a great convenience when hurriedly applying lipstick, while the other hand is occupied in holding a handbag or other articles.

While there has been disclosed herein only one form in which the invention may conveniently be embodied in practice, it is to be understood that this form is presented by way of example only and not in a limiting sense. In short, the invention is limited only by the scope and spirit of the fiollowin g claims.

Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent is:

1. In a lipstick applicator, the combination comprising an elongated outer casing open at its top end, a beveled block member having a beveled lower surface slidably mounted in said casing, a lipstick. cartridge carried by the upper end of said block member, a transversely movable push button extending through the, side wall. of said casing, the beveled lower surface of, said block member facing said push button and being upwardly inclined toward said push button, means engaged by said push button to engage said beveled block member, for causing the latter to be elevated when said push button is pressed inwardly, a cover member hinged atone end to the edge of said open top of said casing and normally overlying said open end, and means operative to cause said cover member to swing to open position when said push button is pressed inwardly.

2. The invention as defined in claim 1, having means for interlocking said cover member and said push button for normally holding said cover member in closed position.

3. The invention as defined in claim 2, wherein said cover member is L-shaped to provide a top portion normally covering the open end of said casing, and having a vertical side portion normally disposed in spaced relation from the outer wall of said casing, said side portion having a rounded portion at its lower end, and said push button having a complementary top groove of such size and disposition as to resiliently receive said rounded portion by a snap action when said cover is closed.

The invention as defined in claim 1, .wherein the means for elevating said block member comprises an elongated finger member located within said casing and positioned against the inner end of said push button, spring means for resiliently pressing the top of said finger member against said block member, whereby when said button is pushed it will cause said finger to force said block member upwardly.

5. The invention as defined in claim 1, wherein said cover member is connected to said casing by link means comprising a pair of articulated arcuate members pivoted atone free end to said block member and at the other free end to said cover member.
