APPAREL DUSTING-CAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 663,670, dated December 11, 1900.
Application filed uly 1900.
T0 otZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARION W. WIsWALL, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dusting-Gaps, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact .to enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains or with whichitis most nearly connected to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to caps such as worn by ladies while doing housework; and the object is to produce a light-Weight cap attractive in appearance and useful and inexpensive. In carrying out this object I usea square or rectangular pieceof material, preferably a gentlemans handkerchief, and by turning the corners under and gathering the marginal portion all around, securing the same by means of a tape, and running an elastic through the tape I convert the handkerchief into an attractive cap of novel design.
The drawings which accompany and form part of this specification illustrate an em bodiment of the invention. 7
Figure 1 represents the completed cap in side elevation and in place on the head. Fig. 2 represents a hand kerchief, such as preferably employed in making the cap, in condition to be brought to the desired shape by simply manipulating the elastic or draw-string.
The reference-letter o. designates the central portion or body of the handkerchief, and b the border. The corner portions 0, which will come at the front of the cap, are doubled under just enough to preserve the symmetry and regularity of the border of the cap, while the corner portions d, which will come at the back part of the cap, are doubled under to a much greater extent to conform to the desired marginal contour at the back, Where an extension for the neck is to be produced. A strip of tape 6 is extended entirely around the under side of the cap, said tape preferably following a central line of the handkerchiefborder 1) around the front and sides of the cap, but extending across the rear part some distance from the said border. This tape is stitched along each edge to the handkerchief, and portions of the tape overlie the doubledunder corner portions 0 and d, so that the Serial No. 25,333. (No model-J formed by the tape, the ends of the elastic being fastened together. This completes the cap, except that 1 preferably fasten a bow of tape or ribbon g to the front part at the middle.
By turning under the corner portions cl, as shown, and carrying the tape across the central portion a of the handkerchief on the line of the forward edges of the said corner portions a neck-covering h is formed of the rear portion of the cap.
It will be seen that by the construction here shown and describedlaccomplish the object of producing an attractive and serviceable dusting-cap which can be inexpensively manufactured.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is as follows:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a ladys dusting-cap made of a rectangular piece of material having the corners folded back and fastened down and the entire marginal portion gathered an elastic being extended around such marginal portion a uniform distance from the edge along the front and sides and a considerably greater distance from the edge at the back to formaneck-covering, substantially as described."
2. As a new article of manufacture, a ladys dusting-cap made of a rectangular piece of material having the corners folded back; a tape extended around the marginal portion on the under side and secured thereto and to the folded-back corner portions to fasten down the same, said tape forming a loop or keeper; and an elastic run through the same to gather the marginal portion of the cap, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 24th day of July, A. D. 1900.
MARION W. WISWALL.
