Wikipedia

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia made with a wiki. Wikipedia Itself makes many more exact claims about what it is, or is an example of, which are always changing. See these, and What Wikipedia is not, if you are not sure if something belongs here or not.

Wikipedia is written in many languages. It is open content. Many people write it.

The project is managed and run by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation. Overall, there are over 300,000 articles. Approximately half are in Full English.

The project started in English on January 15 2001. The Simple English version was created on September 18 2001 in order to let people learning English use Wikipedia. It did not however attract many articles until the fall of 2003, after several other languages reached 15,000 articles each. This made it important to have a translatable base of short articles for all the languages.
